...Just curious. Of course by curious I mean that I'm looking into upgrading my ten year old mexican made strat.
So what are the best guitars out there? (Say within the $400-$500 range?)

Here is my suggestion. Go to your local guitar center or music store and play a bunch of guitars to see what you like the best. Then once you find what you like the best go on craigslist.com and buy it from someone for way cheaper.
I like standard strats and you can get one for around that price or you could probably get a pretty good epiphone Les Paul for that much. I also recently played a 500$ telecaster and it played great.
Another thing we will need to help you find a new guitar is what style of music you play. Some guitars fit styles of music more appropriately.

I agree with the dude above. Soft wood guitars are generally for blues and jazz, while the hard ones are for metal and rock. Either way it's up to you to find "The" guitar. I don't own it, but The Razorback is the sweetest piece of a** I've played with. It's the only guitar that I've had the tone I've always wanted and the stupid Floyd Rose Trem didn't rise on me when I bend(And I bend like a maniac, kinda like Stevie Ray, Dimebag, and David Gilmour.) Thing is....it's 1200, and I don't have that kind of money...yet.
Long story longer, I'd go with like a Ibanez. There's this one that's pretty sweet, I just don't remember what it is. I know it has EMG pick ups, 24 frets, shark fin inlays and has like a wavy cool blue or orange color to it. Sounds good and it picks up sweet squeals, and it's about your price range.

Great, thanks for the advice. I do really need to sit down in a guitar center, but the closest one is about 45 min. to an hour away. Kinda hard to justify the $10 in gas just to look.
I've never really looked at ibanez, nor knew about the whole wood changing the sound thing. Thanks again.

All personal preference my friend....I play mostly on an old epiphone that I bought about 10 years ago. It's heavy but has a sick sound. I changed the pickups in it but that's it.
If I had the money, i would buy this...

Yeah, that guitar is ridiculous. I could only imagine the joy and beauty of never tuning. The question, however, is how well does it work? For some reason I can see that guitar messing up your guitar mid performance trying to tune itself...
