View Full Version : Your opinion needed - What is the toughest instrument to play Expert on?

In your humble opinion. What is the hardest instrument to master? I have respect for all the instruments. I think Expert drums is the hardest because of the coord of both hands and feet. Next for me would be Expert Vocals. I think vocals may require more talent, then something you can learn. What do you guys think? I have a feeling lead guitar is going to get a lot of votes, as it should. Anybody out there struggling to learn bass?

Drums. I watch some of these guys play- and I forget to "tap my tambourine" because I am thinking "how on earth are they doing that!?"
Kudos to you expert drummers! <3

Drums, for sure. While vocals can be really tough for those with no natural ability, there are some ways you can squeak by on some of the tough spots. But, man, drums takes a lot out of you. You need lots of rhythm, insane hand-eye-foot coordination, and loads of stamina.

Drums, for sure. i can sing for sh*t but i still go for drums. lol.
I'm leaning expert drums now and it does get to a point where you can't just scrape by with a bit of luck, you gotta be able to lay down that phat beat or you are out of there in a few bars. if you loose it its off to practice on 50% speed till you get it and move up till you get it at 100%.

Master in my mind is a form of achieving Gold Stars on the songs. I would say Drums simply because there are soo many factors that contribute the drums difficulty.
1) The overall percentage and score required for Gold Stars is somewhat more difficult that the other 3
2) You MUST be coordinated more than in just your fingers
3) You need develop a proper form to play the songs, without form you go nowhere
4) Keeping a beat, which is often hard to dealing with BPM changes and such 2 examples are Run to the Hills and March of the Pigs
5) Lastly drummers deal with pad misses, not responding hits and double hits more often than any other instrument
Guitar, is simply practice, practice, practice and you'll eventually get it
Vocals I find the simplest because I am supposed a "natural" but singing you can get better by even toting your MP3 player around and listening to the songs non stop where as with the instruments you need play them to get better.
For me it's definitely guitar. But thats probably more because I didn't play guitar hero prior to rockband and have had trouble with the strat strummer on fast songs. Not that I can play everything on expert drums, but I can hang in there with at least half the songs on expert compared to probably 25% or less on guitar.
For me vocals is easiest...But I have a good sense of pitch and can match what I hear with my voice pretty well...I'm always singing along with songs or just repeating one that is stuck in my head, really without thinking about it..probably annoying to my wife and others sometimes sorry :p
I will agree though that getting gold stars is very hard on drums because even if you can play the song well, it's easy to lose the beat at least once a song. I've only gotten 2 gold stars on drums and both times I had an FC and just got gold just before the end.

Expert Guitar is WAY too hard for me, but not Expert Drums... I think that's only because I had previous real drumming experience and it helped me with coordination.
Guitar gives me a hard time simply because my left middle finger is broken (never fully healed) so I can't play for long as it requires lots of left hand control n' what not. That, and the fact that I never played guitar hero before... I guess I just suck, lol.
My lil bro, however, is a fiend. Having never played GH or any instrument at all, he picked up Expert Drums right away and does fairly well, and when we had to RMA the drums, he picked up Expert Guitar and got good at it rather quickly (He's way better than me, lol). Any game he picks up he can master...

Drums for sure. I play expert drums and guitar, and the drums are tougher.
I mean I do better at drums, but I played real drums for a long time. Comparing the two though, the stamina issue playing drums that isn't involved with guitar. There is much more to go wrong, and you can't just wing it like playing guitar. If you took someone who never played the drums and put them on the guitar and the drums, they would find learning the guitar much easier.

Drums is pretty much the only thing that fails me anymore.
Vocals... once you "get it" and understand the system well enough, rarely do you face the prospect of failure.
Guitar/Bass... where there are a few challenges here and there, they are generally the most "beatable" with proper technique or overdrive usage.

No, I did not. However, I searched for thread and sent you a PM instead of bumping it after reading your reply.
But yeah, back on topic: I would have imagined that Drums would be the hardest since it's newer than guitar. For a rhythm-based game that is...

As far as Rock Band goes, I have to stick with the crowd on this and say drums.
Even given that it took me anywhere from 2 to 4 months, I forgot exactally how long, on GH2 to master Expert on guitar, and in less than a month I can beat 99% of the songs on expert drums. I contribute this to natural talent. Years ago I picked up the drums in a church choir, and Rock Band just basically revived and built upon that. Vocals aren't hard at all if you know the songs -- if you're trying to BS it, it can be hard. I can get 4-5 stars on vocals on Expert on the songs I know, and BS my way through most of the others on Hard, and the guitar is really just a hand-eye coordination thing. Once you've gotten that skill built up, guitar is cake - drums add in your foot to that, plus more strenuous body work, and not to mention the pad malfunctions and poor quality kick pedal. I can play guitar for hours and be fine, but if I play about 5 or so of the harder drum songs in a row, I can be sweating when everyone else is freezing.

Vocals. Guitar and drums I think can be taken from a zero state to 95%+ on Expert for anyone with time and a modicum of dexterity within a few months.
I think the difficult mechanics of the vocal track on Expert and the fact that many of us have less than stellar singing voices makes vocals the most difficult. A lot of people might struggle with really opening up and belting out the songs and end up feeling embarassed. Luckily, I'm not one of them. :p

Not surprisingly, another vote for drums. Vocals, you can sort of mumble through the songs though I don't really play vocals much since I can't sing at all nor keep pitch particularly well...
Drums meanwhile require a lot of coordination and there's no real way to coast through the songs later on by just hitting certain notes and missing others. I'm currently on Vasoline in hard drums and I find it beyond challenging compared to anything else in the game I've played thus far.

That's partially because "forcing" (especially in falsetto) tends to push you sharp. :)
Not only that, but if you push your vocal chords for extended periods of time, you will get vocal nodes that will A. possibly be painful, and B. Ruin your voice.
This game recognizes precise movements more than "stumbling" or "over singing".
Vocals are hard, don't get me wrong... But I guess coming from someone who has no issue with vocals- drums look scary as hell.

If you like singing loud- hold the microphone further away, but be sure you're "spot on" when ending notes. I had to teach a friend of mine (who is a lead singer for a band) the eccentricities of singing in this game recently, lol. He's a screamer, and sings loud enough to wake the neighborhood up, so we had to figure out how to fix it. hahaha.

Maybe it means I can sing (I've never thought I could), I dunno, but have zero trouble with vocals on expert so long as I already know the lyrics. The ones I know really well (like Green Grass and High Tides or Live Forever) I can double-up on, playing drums at the same time.

You don't need to know the lyrics hon.... You can sing on "na na na" and get the same score.
I "na na na'ed" highway star the first time I sang it (which was on expert- I didn't do any of the easy-peasy modes... I think I'm a glutton for punishment) and got in the high 90's.

It's not so much knowing the actual WORDS that trips me up, but it's knowing the vocal cadence and how it plays against the rhythm of the song. You cant 'na-na-na' your way through a song without at least a rudimentary knowledge of the lyrics...at least, I can't. Kudos to you though sweetie-pie (had to, re: "hon" ;) ).

Roflmao. It's a habit... And I'm living in the south, lol.
*Shrug* I've learned to "read the lines" in the game. So- I just say "na" anytime I see a new line coming up, and move my voice accordingly. Then again- I'm used to reading sheet music, so lines are kinda easy.

I'm up and down. Some songs give me trouble because they are hard. Some give me trouble because the charting doesn't seem to react well to singing it "properly".
Some songs I'm just more comfortable with the register and more familiar with the song. I guess my range must be okay: I can sing "In Bloom" and "Creep" decently (but the low notes are near the bottom of my natural range); "Dani California", "Celebrity Skin" and "Vasoline" are about perfect; "Maps" I'm pretty good at and I sing it at the presented pitch; "Run to the Hills" I can sing at Bruce's pitch but I do better dropping an octave.
One song I can often five star playing Expert guitar and Expert vocals at the same time is "(Don't Fear) the Reaper". That always makes me happy. :)

You have a point there but I think the thing is it's harder to "master" Drums then it is to Vocals. Plus there's also the fact that you can sometime's "humm" your way through some song's on Vocals and there's really no easy way to survive Drums XD

I said vocals. For all of the Guitar Hero series, I plateaued at a point where I was a couple of songs away from being able to pass every song on Expert. For Rock Band drums, I think I'll actually be able to at least pass everything (I only have "Run to the Hills" left from the on-disc content); and I can pull off more 5-star and gold star performances. For vocals, though, I usually won't venture past Medium; and even that is a struggle for me on a lot of songs.
To be sure, I've put a lot less time in on vocals but I don't think they'll ever come together enough for me to do much on Expert.
Parodygm
03-13-2008, 05:23 PM
For me, the gulf between Medium and Hard would probably the biggest for guitar (I don't know, I'm a GH vet and started straight into Expert). For drums I'd say it's fairly even between Medium to Hard and Hard to Expert.
I'd say the difference between Hard and Expert vocals is vast. I find the Expert vocals extremely unforgiving and considerably less fun than Hard.

As a drummer and someone who has sung in a choir a few times,
VOCALS.
The vocals are so varied, it's ridiculously hard to do well on any more than a few songs that fit your vocal style. If you're a great drummer, you're a great drummer. If you can sing Buddy Holly really well, that doesn't mean a whole lot when it comes to other songs.
I've gotten one gold star on Vocals (including the 25 DLC songs I have). Ever.
I've gotten somewhere around 30 gold stars on Drums.

I'm still learning and never played GH before, so the jump from medium to hard guitar is giving me a hard time. It would have been nice if there was another difficulty level between medium and hard where the speed and number of notes stayed the same, but they just added the 5th button. Fretting is hard enough for me now, but the additional speed and notes are killing me. The first time I played GGaHT on medium guitar I nearly 5 starred it, but I have a heck of time passing the first tier of songs on hard guitar.
But I think drums would be the hardest in spite of that, except for maybe songs that I'm very familiar with.

I think there is no right answer!
I play Expert Drums but only play Hard/Expert Guitar/Bass. I won't even mention Vocal because I can fail some songs on Easy! LoL
So yea for me Vocals is the hardest. It might be because I have no natural skill at singing. I think its alot harder to learn sings than to play an instrument.
Mabye i'm crazy but the vocals and drums were so easy for me (not the hardest songs but playing expert in general)

Without a doubt in my mind, the drums are by far the hardest.
Sometimes it's hard enough just to keep your hands doing the right thing, especially with a lot of the rolls. But then ontop of that, you have to incorporate your foot into this. The only song I can complete on expert is Say It Ain't So, and only at about 89%. I'm still trying to master Medium on most of the songs. I've only got 100% on a few of the songs on medium. I still can't get through any Metallica song on hard. Granted I've only been playing for about a month or so, so I wouldn't expect to be doing any better than I am right now.
Guitar honestly just takes a lot of practice. It's just a matter of hand eye coordination. Once you master the tricks of the trade, you'll get there a lot faster than on the drums.
Singing by far is the easiest....I can complete most songs in the upper 90% range on expert.

For me vocals would be number one. I suck big time on vocals. Second would be guitar my fingers can't really move fast enough to play. Drums I think that I have gotten pretty damn good at, and the only instrument that I have played Expert on. I haven't even tried Bass yet, but it looks real easy
WingsOfSteel

I'm going to go against the tide and say Guitar.
Drums are hard, yeah, but we're learning them from scratch. I'm three songs away from beating all of Expert only three months in. (DFTR, RTTH, WGFA)
I've beaten Expert vocals in less than two months.
It took way longer than both of those for me to beat GH1 Expert.

true difficulty: drums but hard to play: guitar. The difference is guitar is getting more and more booring for me, I even like bass better. Dunno why but the better I get at drums the more I want to doze off on challengeing guitar, and that's hard to play.

I say vocals. Partially because I've conquered the other tours, but can barely squeeze by on hard vocals. Vox are difficult to master because I don't think you get better by playing more, you have to have either 1) natural born talent or 2) vocals coach. Plus! Getting an expert vocalist is a lot harder than getting an expert drummer/guitarist/bassits. Actually, getting a vocalist period is hard. Actually version 2.0, getting an expert player period is hard.

Vocals are interesting to me and I will tell you why. When I first started singing on Rockband, I played on Medium and got like multiple 100%. I naturally moved on to Hard and 5 star'd all the songs. This is toooo easy, I thought to myself. Then I played Expert, and I fell in the toilet. Expert was off the scales compared to Hard Mode.
This is different from drums/guitar/bass where the jump from Medium to Hard seems to be really excessive. If you can play Hard mode, you can play Expert mode (to a point).
Vocals are the only instrument that you can play hard, but fall flat on Expert. Maybe I should practice more on the vocals, but I still need tons of practice on the guitar. My bass player will vouch for that :p

I haven't moved to vocals on Expert yet, but am nearly finished on Hard. Based on my ability to pass the songs on my first try, I'm guessing that Expert vocals won't be the hardest. But I'm sure others, like SenRaq, would disagree.
As for the other instruments, guitar, is the hardest for me, easily. I came to Rock Band with no real life music background and no experience with GH. About as much as a blank slate as you could get.
Drums started out being harder for me, but at some point everything just "clicked" and I cruised pretty quickly through Hard, and it takes me only one or two tries on Expert drums (I'm about half way through the tour). Having seen the videos, I probably won't finish expert drums, but that's the same problem with ...
Guitar. Oh how I hate a lot of guitar songs. I made it to the end of Hard Guitar, and it's been a few weeks and I still can't finish the solo (83%) in Flirtin' With Disaster. I haven't really tried the last song (half-ass it to about 75%), but did the other ones in that tier. I moved onto Expert guitar without finishing Hard and am about half-way through there, but each one of those songs is a real struggle. Multiple play throughs at least. I will never, ever finish Expert guitar. With drums, I can imagine that I might, one day, finish expert.
I haven't played a lot of bass, but it almost always feels like easy-mode guitar.

It's not even a question. Drums.
Bass and Guitar are not that bad. The only song I've failed so far is that stupid green grass song, or whatever it's called. Because of the dumb ****ing solo at the end. I can play those in real life, but I can't play them on these stupid fake guitars - they just don't work for me. I'm moving my fingers fast enough and in rhythm, but it still just never picks them up properly.
Drums are ****ing impossible. I'm stuck on the same song on drums but on medium. Because of the ending, again. And I HATE the song - so I'll probably never make it past there. Which is a problem with this game - some songs are just too annoying to play, that they ruin the tour mode.
I CANNOT hit the bass and pads in an alternating pattern. It's just impossible for me. So I get stuck when it's something like Y B Y B Y B Y over and over. I can hit them if they come at the same time, but my brain will not allow my hands and feet to move separately like that.
Vocals I don't count as an instrument. But can't sing - and I don't enjoy singing, so I don't bother with that mode.

I voted for drums. I think this is mostly because if you have someone who has never played the game, any rhythm based games, or real-life instruments, and have them try out any of the instruments, I think they would have the most trouble with drums.
I think to an extent, everyone is familiar with singing, and having no sense of rhythm or hand-eye coordination, you could do decently singing along to some popular songs.
I'd say guitar and drums are close in difficulty, but I have to say drums are harder. It just seems like having the foot and hand involved adds an extra level of difficulty that most people can't seem to grasp. Also, the need to play consistently through a song without many ways to 'fake' it tends to make the drums harder.

For me its vocals, just simply because I cant sing to save my life. Regardless of how much I practice, its just not going to matter, because I flat out suck at singing. The other stuff I can practice and get better at.
