View Full Version : Primus Proposition

I have cooked up in my mind a Primus pack because, as many of us know, Rock Band is in dire need of some Primus songs, not to mention more variety of challenging/interesting bass lines. I dug through the archives and picked some songs that I thought would make a great pack for every instrument. I included links to the songs on youtube so that those unfamiliar can check the songs out and see what they think.

So if you agree, disagree, or have modifications you think would be better, post your thoughts here. Sign here, post here, flame away, whatever it takes to keep this thread running.

*UPDATE* I'll also be posting videos of the other songs mentioned in the thread so that everyone can get a taste. At the very least this thread will serve as a place to check out some Primus videos.

************
My Top 3 Picks
************
Harold of the Rocks http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yu19-qvD9L4
This is a live version of the song and is slightly extended. The album version is only somewhere around 6 minutes long.
Lacquer Head http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gn-s5cmy8dU
Tommy the Cat http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yn3uiLZY9Jg

Honorable Mentions

Shake Hands with Beef http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xN-DNcqYUcY

They go into Pudding Time (which is another great song) at 2:30 in this particular live recording:
Mr. Krinkle http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WtrmbfS_Vuc
Wynona's Big Brown Beaver http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dzhL-0_pC3E
American Life http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dfHCG6t9Gs0
Song ends at 3:08
Jerry was a Race Car Driver http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eUxAol0wbak&feature=related
Eclectic Electric http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lh4aoj_R8Zk

Electric Uncle Sam http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fH6Gzxlvh2s
Sgt. Baker http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=djTzo5l4axI
I couldn't find a video that does the song justice, but this is probably the best of the videos on youtube

I myself have posted a petition for Primus on Rock Band a few weeks back with good feedback. All the songs you listed would be excellent for Rock Band, and I 100% agree that Les Claypools Bass playing would be a challenge. As for the post above mine, great choices except for Mr. Krinkle. The only reason why I say that is the majority of that song is played with a Cello, still one of the greats though. If only one song made it on though, I would want either My Name Is Mud or John The Fisherman.

Not to mention the synthesizer in March of the Pigs and the turntables in Sabotage. I'm pretty sure there are a couple of songs where you play a keyboard like instrument. Harmonix doesn't seem to be too discriminatory in their selection of instruments, and they've done well by that so far.

I'd desperately love a Primus pack, but I'd take any song by them... gimme all their albums I say...

Also Eclectic Electric does have vocals, and I'd love to sing them "SANITY IS COMING TO YOUR TOWN!"

My top picks are usually like Shake Hands with Beef, Lacquer head, and Electric Uncle Sam... anything else off Anti-pop that has Tom Morello's guitar would be awesome though...

Just gimme some Primus! Give the bassist lovers something to play beyond Rush and Black Sabbath that's fun.

Yes, Please

how do u expect to play Mr Krinkle on bass when hes playing it with a bow in the song?!?! and its "the toys go winding down"

the Primus 3 pack should be...

Wynonas Big Brown Beaver
Groundhog's Day
Welcome to this World

Wynona might be their big hit, and the band might hate the song, but its clearly the best song by them for RB... has the best guitar solo of any of their songs.

Groundhogs Day goes without sayin, would be one of the funnest songs in the game! and same with Welcome to this World.

Primus would be ownage, but I think at times the drums would be ridiculously tough, considering the fact that their drummer plays on a double bass set. Songs like "Tommy the Cat" or "Pudding Time" where he's constantly at it would be tough unless Harmonix releases a second bass pedal add-on. I'd probably go one of their lighter-on-the-bass-drum songs:

Wynona's Big Brown Beaver
Jerry Was a Racecar Driver
Lacquerhead
Professor Nutbutter's House of Treats
Chastizing of the Renegade

Songs of that sort...

Failing that, anything off of Frizzle Fry is cool. Or "Nature Boy" off of Pork Soda, yeah, you know what, there are a lot of Primus possibilities. Can I suggest there be MORE than one Primus pack?

I second that, frog brigade songs rock, so does his holy mackerel stuff too.

I know its got no vocals, but the awakening would be an awesome song for when you make trhe singer go and get you drinks!
I'd go with The Antipop too, love it.
And i love scissor man.

Antipop is probs the only one that would fit into rock band, but i still like the world as i see it in my special mind :)

Love to hear some Tommy the Cat, Bob's Party Time Lounge, Frizzle Fry, Wynonna's Big Brown Beaver, Antipop, Too Many Puppies, My Name is Mud, American Life. I could go on but those ones are probably the most suited for Rock Band purposes, being fun for the whole band.

I'd by psyched for a Primus DLC pack. ESPECIALLY if it's the Frizzle Fry Album. Mmmmmmmm.......

But if it's just a pack, I'd have to go with:

John the Fisherman
Sgt. Baker
Tommy the Cat

John the Fisherman because it simply is a solid song for all the parts. Fun singing, drums (the drum part is awesome), bass. Perhaps not, but I was just thinking how awesome it would be.

Sgt. Baker, because it is a nice chill-out song. Is it just me, or is it that most packs seem to have one song that is easier then the rest (NIN pack for example. The Collector is really easy for the instruments compared to March of the Pigs and The Perfect Drug). So I think that could fit in.

Tommy the Cat is just........it's Tommy the Cat. Need I say more?

Yeah, they have better songs like My Name is mud and whatnot, but a lot of the songs would be impossible for drums. As someone above me posted, this is a double bass band. My Name is Mud would be WAY off on the drums because basically most of the time it's just a bass roll.

So, yeah. Just my 2 cents.

JTF is perfect for rockband, but not so-much for GH... not enough good guitar in JTF for GH.. but the drumming/singing for it would suit rockband perrrrrfectly....

I have been a primus fan since I first hear jerry was a race care driver about 3 weeks after it was released a friend turned me on to them knowing that I would love the talent of Les Claypool

top pick
Tommy The Cat
there is not a primus fan who does not like this song even people who don't care for primus like this song so for me it seems like a natural choice.

Second Pick
Winnona's Big Brown Beaver
Now for me this one is purely for the fact that it is probably one of the most widley know (by non primus fans) song by primus how often have you hear "oh yeah the beaver song I like that one"

Third and final Pick
Nature Boy
this is my pick I chose this one cause I would love to see people singing to this one in public trying to rack up the points but mostly cause it is my favorite

I would love any primus, particularly Mr. Knowitall, DMV, American Life, Tommy the Cat, Jerry was a Racecar Driver, Puddin' Taine, Pudding Time, Laquer Head, Spagetti Western (sick drums and bass), Too Many Puppies.... I just realized that I could go on untill I have listed all their songs, you'll get my point.
To sum it up: Any Primus is welcome.
There's really no band that could replace them, they really are one of a kind.

Like Racism, but instead of race, bass, get it?

Also,
Primus Pack 01

Tommy the Cat should be on-disk for Rock Band 3 in my opinion, if not, replace John the Fisherman with Tommy the Cat.

I think most people who know me around here now my dying need for Primus to be in this game.

The Fisherman Trilogy plus a handfull of other songs (probably Tommy the Cat [assuming it's not on disc later], Jerry was a Racecar Driver, Sgt. Baker, Wynona's Big Brown Beaver or, well, hell, like 90% of their music) would be super ultra epic.

I'd buy pretty much any Primus song if it was released. I made a suggestion ages ago when I first joined about a pack, but that was before I fully got into them.

Tommy The Cat would be a great track, as would Wynona's Big Brown Beaver.

Its not up there, and I doubt if theres any live recordings, but look for "Ballad of Bodacious" from the Antipop album and "Professer Nutbutters House of Treats" from the Tales From The Punchbowl album.

Hmm. For the last year I was expecting that we'd be getting Primus DLC. Hopefully it comes soon enough. We'd like to see a six pack, but I bet alot of us would be happy with a three pack. I'm sure many will agree that Primus should be released to teach people about this awesome band. Anyway, here's a six pack that would most likely be seen as DLC and a six pack of songs that I would like to see.
