View Full Version : New simple fix for roll issues.

Drum rolls on my set suck. So I took apart my drums today in an effort to try the "penny mod". It made the drum unusable, so scratch that. I figured why not tinker around while the drums were disassembled.
I noticed the orange piece (holding the spring and rubber thingy) mentioned in the penny mod is screwed in all the way. So I thinks to myself, "won't that damper some of the vibration to the sensor?"
After about 20 minutes of adjusting I noticed by unscrewing both sides by about 2-3 threads that my drum works PERFECTLY now. I was finally able to 100% an Expert song. It can roll blistering fast without missing a beat.
You will notice if you press the orange piece in it can get stuck, so make sure before reassembly you have it flush with the screw heads, not the drum base.
If you're still having issues give it a try and see how it works.

Right after I get my set all sock modded taped up just how I wanted it....Urgh.
Probably have to try this though just 'cause they look so dumb with a sock strapped to it. Can you clarify what you mean when you say 'flush with the screw heads'?
I was going to just go in, undo a twist or two on the Red and Green and go from there but then how does the sensor actually stay on the pad?

There's a spring that keeps it there. It activates through vibration, not the actual springing. By flush I mean before putting it back together make sure the orange piece is against the screw head and not stuck on the threads.
It's still going great as I've 100%'d 4 songs in 24 hours.

So I just removed my old setup I had on it (sock mod with 2 rubber bands holding them down on the red and green, worked pretty good!) and tried this out just for the heck of it. Wow. Haven't actually played a song yet but turned on ...And Justice for All and looped the intro to test rolls and wow...real real good guys. I didn't change the yellow or blue because they're fine.
I had taken apart my drums before though, so I had seen the inside and had already 'flushed' it before. All this mod requires is a screwdriver and loosen the screws holding the spring down by the tiniest bit. Just enough so that you can push it down with your finger (it should be stuck right to the head with no give right out of the box) and watch it spring up, but just barely.
Great find. I'm going to go try it out more right now!
Edit: Just played a couple songs and I set 2 new records and matched my old high scores (using the sock mod) without using the sock mod. If I can do that, and not have my set looking so goofy that's awesome. Props to the OP for sure.
This should replace lots of mods.
BTW, one song I played was 'Sugar Magnolia' and around half way through (on hard) the chart stopped, a white spot appeared where the notes either explode or make the 'missed' sound, expanded, made the chart behind it like get sucked into the middle then just went away and continue all in less than say 2 seconds. I lost my spree and such, the TV itself was fine and the songs before and after that were fine and never had anything like that happen. Very odd. If I wasn't sober I'd say it looked like I was looking at the charts on majic mush or something.

Sweet, glad to hear it helped someone else. :)

I have a QM model, this probably won't help any EL models. What's yours?

It's a QM as well.

Sort of bumping and following up on this. From factory QM's I simply unscrewed the piezo slightly, so that there was a little bit of bounce from the spring thats built in (why the spring if it's screwed down all the way?) I decided to combine this mod and the 'sock mod' (even though i don't use socks). It now rolls perfect. I can't actually move my hands fast enough to make it konk out and not realize I'm hitting it. I was stuck on 'the hand that feeds' for a couple days in expert, combined this mod with the sock mod and I just got 4.5 stars, along with Gold Stars the song after on Dani California along with a 1257 note streak (my only other gold star ever was Live Forever). I think thats a sure sign that they're working ALOT better.
I also realized that since the Red and Green are separate from the main kit (obviously) that's why they roll differently. So I just grabbed some spare lumber from my basement and stabilized it via 2 pieces of tape and under the elastic bands. See the pics below for my entire setup:

Thanks again saJester for the idea.

Edit: Forgot to mention theres a couple pics about my pedal. Just showing what I use to reinforce it and not have to spend $30 on some thing made of steel...Hasn't broken yet and likely won't. Can't see how it will anyway.
Edit2: Found in these forums a pic (http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w128/crcastillojr/CIMG1049.jpg) of what we're talking about. See the orange thing with 2 screws? Slightly loosen them and by trial and error find out what is best for you.

This worked great on my SL drumkit! I can highly recommend this modification!

QUESTION:
sounds good, but im curious, will it affect the warranty?
I think it runs out soon anyways but... :D

Hmm I tried this last weekend on my QM set with no positive results. They reacted exactly the same way with the screws loosened as they did with them fully tight...
How much did you loosen the screws? I tried 1/8th of a turn, 1/4 of a turn, and 1/2 of a turn.
