Everyone in my family likes to make a couple of characters on Rock Band and the eight character limitation per instrument is a real pain.
There shouldn't even be a limit anyway when it serves absolutely no purpose.
Yeah, I know, make a new account, right?
It is still a pain and the limitation serves no practical purpose.
It would be nice to have it removed.

Harsh. I didn't know about that limit. I will eventually hit it too =(

Yes, there is a 8 character per instrument limit.

I think we hit the limit on Guitar/Bass and Vocals... Drummer we got 3.
Sucks....

There is a work around. Create another profile on your 360 and log into that account to access an additional set of 8. It sucks but it works.

Aww shucks. I wasn't aware of that limit!

Well obviously some developer at HMX decided that eight characters per interment was enough.
Well it is not enough.
It may be ok if it was only one person playing the game but it is not near enough if everyone in the family wants to play and have their own character and sometimes more than one character.
I would really like to encourage the development team at HMX to fix that.

Every day I am amazed at how nitpicky people can get. HMX made you a fantastic game and they release new material for it weekly to ensure that it doesn't get too stale or repetetive. Constantly imploring them to add or remove features must be pretty annoying from their perspective.

I think that would be cool to make more guitarists. I feel like I hit that character limit the fastest. That's one of my favorite aspects of Rockband is creating different characters and the many details that you can change and add.

Eight is enough, just call me Dick Van Patten. :D

Eh, if they double the guitar limit since it includes guitarists and bassists I think it'd be fair enough. Personally, I don't think any one person should hit the 8 character limit, and other people playing on your console can easily have their own gamer profile to sign into and their own character lists to access.

I don't see why not. It's a limitation that really doesn't seem to have a valid reason to exist and can be irritating, and Harmonix needs to know about it - especially if they want to make Rock Band itself the franchise.

Is the limit on the PS3 version too?

Yes it is. And between my horror movie characters and Batman baddies I've already hit the limit. I guess that means no wizard of oz band.

Making characters is one of my favorite parts :(,I guess I'll be hitting the guitarist limit here soon then.

It's their job. Annoying should not be an issue.

Hello!
First off, I want to say that I love playing rock band, and think the developers have done a great job!
I would like to add my support for either removing or raising the limit as well. I have quite a few people over and everyone likes to have their own character, we ran into this limit. :( It seems a shame to have a game that lends itself to being played by lots of people, have a limitation that stifles having too many people play.
Peace,
-Nick

Apparently, I reached the Guitar limit and approaching the Vocals limit...

I thought that needs to be changed, too. I play this game with a lot of my friends, who all make their own characters. The Guitarists were the first to get maxed because EVERYONE's played Guitar Hero. Vocalists are getting there.
A suggestion?
Maybe you could work in the option of having a character being able to switch between instruments? It could be in a sub-menu before each song like the difficulty?

Oh really? That's quite presumptuous... unless you're privy to the source code. Maybe it's an arbitrary limit, maybe there's a good reason in terms of memory management for doing it this way.

My guess is this is a data management issue for their servers. The extra characters would likely present a burden on the website and leaderboards.

I so agree with that. If not removing the limit altogether, at least allowing double the limit on so-called "guitarists" that is.
Meanwhile, I have six guitarists/bassists and would very well have eight right now except that I deleted two of them within days of making them (they were for other people's use, but no one ever did use them in the end- same deal with a drummer). And while the PS3 I play on is my dad's, I do indeed have my own PSN account separate from his (though one of my vocalists is on his account as well as my own, left over from before the idea of having my own PSN even occurred to me and there for me when I'm stuck playing through his account). The idea of creating at least one more has crossed my mind, but due to the limit I'm hesitant.
And no, I'm not creating another PSN just so I can have more characters. Setting one up is too much of a hassle, and I'd have to unlock songs and stuff all over again.

If it'd be possible, I'd like to see the limit at least extended. I must say, the customization for characters and instruments is really great, and I feel like I'm nitpicking... But it'd be so much fun to just just what I can do with the character editor. (And still be able to let my friends have their own characters when they come over)

I disagree. Fans nitpicking is one of the most helpful ways for developers to know what they are doing right and what they are doing wrong.
If nobody complained about legitimate problems, the developer would see no need to address them, and the problems would only become more and more annoying over time.

Oh really? That's quite presumptuous... unless you're privy to the source code. Maybe it's an arbitrary limit, maybe there's a good reason in terms of memory management for doing it this way.
Arbitrary limits were all the rage in the days of the NES and SNES, but I do hope we've moved on past the memory-starved technologies where games like Nobunaga's Ambition 2 would save ram by storing the year in just one byte, then adding 1476 to it.
I don't see how it could be a ram issue, since I don't think you have to load all the characters at once except to list just their name and instrument.
I don't see how it could be a rom issue - if you can store song after DLC song, a few more characters shouldn't hurt.
If there really is a limitation somewhere, I'd be inclined to think it'd be because of a design flaw. They're just characters that you select, load up and use - how many are available should have no bearing on anything.
I'd be more inclined to forgive the limitation of 15 characters in a charname, because it could be because of space limitation (although since the band quote is capped at 63 characters, and just shrinks to really small text if necessary, probably not).
Edit:
My guess is this is a data management issue for their servers. The extra characters would likely present a burden on the website and leaderboards.
I suppose it could be for the website. I have to admit I'm not familiar with what features it offers though. Leaderboards, though, don't work by actual character AFAIK. I haven't seen the characters appear except in band rosters as simply a name - do they show up anywhere else?
If it really is because of the website, I'd much rather be able to create as many as I like than being able to show them to people who won't care about them.
