I searched for a "Greatest Video Game Ever" thread and pulled up 283 hits. Does this thread exist? If not, let's start one.

Any Console/PC/Arcade Board, any time. Just name your favorite game and why. I'm hoping to hear of some classics I've never played.

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Just because I was young when it came out and I got into it more than all the other games I have ever played...

Plainly, the answer is Goldeneye 007 for the N64. How much fun have I had playing deathmatches long into the night, fueled only by cream sodas and microwave burritos... Definitely the most fun I've ever had in a multiplayer game.

For the single-player experience, I'm going to say Crono Trigger on SNES. Epic, time-travelling RPG madness. Plus Flea, Ozzie, and Slash are in it!

oh man!! there's just so many.....I have been a gamer ever since the Atari 2600 (yeah I'm old).

If I have to pick one I guess I would have to say: Legend of Zelda "A link to the past" (SNES).:)

Rock Band is definitely the future greatest game ever (I'm not just saying that)

But I really thought someone would mention E.T. on Atari by now
:p

I can't really say Rock Band is the greatest ever. Tis not even released, nor have I played it. So thus far my decision still stands. Come November though, it might be a whole different story.

ET and Custer's Revenge... I would go ahead and say they don't belong here.

My favorite game: Secret of Mana/Seiken Densetsu 2

I was addicted to that game... I maxed out every spell and character and weapon. The game play was great and I remember being in total awe of Mode 7 graphics.

As an aside, I once tried to explain what Mode 7 was to a friend of mine. He was watching me fly around on Flammie while I explained as well as I could. His response to me was "Put it in <I>Mode 6</I>!"

In all honesty, I think I'd have to say FFVII.

But also Castlevania: Symphony of the Night was one of my favorite games as well.

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Just because I was young when it came out and I got into it more than all the other games I have ever played...

I always preferred Majora's Mask. The story just seemed a bit more character-based and the whole thing was a bit more personal, which made it so awesomely creepy. But OoT kicked ass, too.

Honorable Mention: Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (DS)

This game was amazing. It had a whole truckload of mysteries and whodunits played out in a courtroom setting where you had to use the evidence to find out who murdered the victim and it was consistently told in a creative way.

I've decided to dislike Zelda games. I loved A Link to the Past, and I loved OoT, but it was just a regurgitation of the same game over and over and over. Then they added a pony!

The gameplay is great, the graphics are great, just...

I mean, let's see...
LoZ was the original
LoZ II - a sequel. ok.
LoZ ALttP - Ok, so those games never happened
LoZ OoT - Ok, again, those games never happened
LoZ MM - I believe it's an OoT sequel
LoZ WW - I think it continues OoT, but ignores MM
LoZ TP - Ok, again, none of those ever happened.

Then there are the gameboy and Philips CD-I games...

Ok, the CD-I is pushing it, but still... I just want them to continue the series. Metal Gear has been continuous since it's first game, so I know it can be done.

I hate threads like this because you always get some of the stupiest answers. (and it attracts tons of fanboyism as well. bleh.)

I know it's all opinion but that's half the problem considering some games are just plain BETTER technically and design wise.

instead of 'best game ever' I think 'your fav game ever' would be a more suitable thread title

Uhhh... I LIKE Final Fantasy, but I'm not a "fan" I guess. I try not to be a "fan" of anything. It's that whole "respecting others" thing getting in the way again. Feel free to open up with whatever you need to though. I'm interested in your opinion but maybe you should PM me with what you think so we don't start a war?

It's up to you I guess.

Super Metroid for the SNES.

Just got this on the Wii Shop channel and have not been able to put it down, I hate going to class because it means I can't play Super Metroid. It is a really good game. I'm happy that I spent $8 on it.

Too many games...

Overall I would have to say Half Life. The first one.

In '98 Everyone was all about Metal Gear Solid and OoT.

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love those games, I fact, I would say those are my second and third favorite games ever.

The GoldenEye effect also hadn't worn off yet, everyone was still praising it like crazy!
Then came Half Life and it blew my mind!! It was my first PC shooter, and it played amazingly, it was scary, and the marines were the smartest things ever!

I still play this game.

PS: Ichthyosaurs were the only things that ever made me litterally POO MY PANTS!

I know I'll get flamed but I was around for the N64 but OOT and Mario 64 just didn't hit me on the same levels as these games

(Some earlier games were left out because, well I wasn't born)

Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Crash Bandicoot series
Spyro the Dragon series (kiddy now but I loved them back then)

But... Halo 1 was, and still is, the best single player FPS on all consoles and PCs, and believe me, I'll played em all, from Alien Ressurection to Half Life 2.

Metal Gear Solid 2

FF7 or FF10

Resident Evil 2 or 4

Guitar Hero also deserves a nod (soon to be pwned by Rock Band)

and Bioshock, although i don't know if it will stand the test of time.

I have a few. Resident Evil 4 was freaking amazing. It was my favorite for a while. FABLE. Aw man. Fable, GODLIKE game. I beat 100 plus times. I can't get enough of it!

The GH Series would be in there, but I failed to see any AC/DC in the games. So...

But. Fable, BEST. GAME. EVER.

I loved Fable soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much. Still didnt beat Halo...

Resi Evil 4. I bought this for Wii (I never had the LameCube and at this time I had traded in my PS2 for PSP goodness... many would doubt that decision but other than waiting for longer for GH I couldn't care less) and I just wasn't bothered.

In fact, I only play VC on the Wii... I have OoT (I was playing that a lot but when you've played it once it feels like you're forcing yourself for nostaligas sake), Mario 64 (holds up well), Super Mario Bros 1 (OMG UBER SPEEDRUNS :D) Super Mario Bros 2 ( bad move... what did they do...) and Super Mario World (yay... love it)

Reason I say this.. ever watched a movie or played a game when you were way little, and you get a special feeling(not there) when playing it? Well, go play that game or watch that movie now.. that feeling is gone.. When I first played that game I was hooked, I wouldnt put it down.. I dont know how long its been since it came out but.. that game still has that same feeling as if it were the first time I played it.. I like the fighting. You don't just select a move and watch your guy do it like in most turn based rpg's, bu you have to execute combos for your attack which are called additions. This game has just always had an epic feeling to me

As of right now... all games have been dethroned to Guitar Hero 2 - until maybe Rock Band. Seriously. I've never played a game as religiously as GH2 on 360.

But before that, I would have of said one of these:

Mike Tyson's Punchout - NES
Wetrix - N64 or Aqua Aqua - PS2 (practically the same game)
Soul Calibur 2 - XBOX

I can't narrow it down to one but my choices are:

Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy VIII (my personal favorite)
Final Fantasy XII
Final Fantasy Tactics
Metal Gear Solid
Chrono Trigger
Dark Cloud 2
Tekken 5
Okami
Deus Ex

Don't get me wrong, I really liked Fable... I pushed that game like crazy because I worked for MS at the time. I, however, made the mistake of actually believing Peter Molyneux and I repeated what he said about that game... It was so hyped up about choices... it was just crushing to me how little your choices affected you. And as far as taking a character through his whole life...
That was pretty much like this:

-Continuing will advance you to the next part of this post. Do you wish to continue?
A Yes X No

and you get a special feeling(not there) when playing it?
Man, I laughed hard when I read that.

I was wondering?? Do Arcade video games count?? As you know many great Arcade games never made it to the Home console systems, at least not in their original form.

Like "Ninja Gaiden" (anybody played this one?) I remember I was obsessed with this Arcade game, it was hard!!! I think I never made it pass the 4th level. Not because I didn't have the skills, but because I was in Jr. high back then and did not have the bank to keep coughing up those quarters!!:D

FallenAce
08-30-2007, 08:11 AM
Yeah, but the NG on NES was completely different from the arcade board. BTW, have you ever gone back and replayed the NES NG series? The story makes no sense. I heard there's a video or something that just runs the story parts for you so you don't have to go back and play, which is good, because I remember getting stuck at some stage in NG2 where the wind would make it really difficult to jump forward and I would constantly fall in pits and die.

I didn't know Ninja Gaiden was an arcade game, and that there was 2 different ninjas to choose from. Must have been totally different.

OK, I Have a bunch so in advance, sorry if this is a little long...

Duck Tales (nes) for my kind of obscure/old school cred. Seriously loved this game when I was a kid. Even tried to play it again recently and it held up to time a lot better then I expected.

Super Mario RPG, Crono Trigger and Final Fantasy 6 For changing my tastes all with in one summer.

Starcraft for being my first favorite PC game.

Tony Hawk Pro Skater series for being something I never thought I'd love. (1-4 BTW, kind of lost interest durring the THUG/THAW games)

FreQuency/Amplitude for introducing me to music games... and not because I'm trying to suck up.

Knights of the Old Republic for being the best game based on a property I don't even really care that much about...and I needed some Canadian content in here.

FF7, FF tactics, FFXI, ES4: Oblivion and WoW for being the First 5 games I could remember that I played for more then !00 hours.

Bioshock for making me feel emotions no game has before.

and obviously...

GH series... no one here needs an explanation. Those who have played it understand why better then any silly little joke I could post here could ever explain.

I think my favorite single player game is Daggerfall. Even after getting an N64 and having games with way better muisic sound & graphics, I still loved Daggerfall and could play it for hours. It also had so much to explore and there were so many tricks to figure out. (Anyone who knows the game ever actually find a witch to summon deadra? ....I did)

My favorite multiplayer game is probably either GH2 co-op or the Street Fighter Alpha series.

Oh and the best board game ever is, far and away, Cosmic Encounter.

This will be long... as I've gone the whole hog and done a top ten!

10.
WWF No Mercy - N64
Anyone who's a big wrestling fan and has played this game knows why. The game was so realistic for it's time, I'm still shocked that we're just rehashing the beat-em up's of Smackdown instead of pulling this gem back.

The more injured you got, the slower you ended up moving, if you worked on the opponents head, he'd start holding his neck because of it, and submission finishes actually ended with a satisfying (or not so satisfying, if you were on the recieving end) "crack" being heard.

For a console that had quite a few limitations (full FMV not being there is kind of a drawback for a wrestling game when you're adding in the video intro's of wrestlers ya'know?), they brought out possibly the greatest wrestling game I ever remember playing... this also would have been higher had they not stuffed up royally with the blood glitch, meaning that second hand copies around the world leave people guessing if they have blood in them (and thus being a glitched to hell game) or have the blood removed (and so creating characters is safe).

9.
Heroes Of Might & Magic 3 - PC
Admittedly this isn't everyones cup of tea, however for sheer replayability this game was awesome, you could pick from any race in the game, and even "mix and match" monsters from them as you went around (tho' you did lose a bonus you got for only having one type in your army).

The general idea was "raise an army, wipe out the opposing ones" but it was much, much, tougher than it sounds, because you had to claim mines and other such things to collect wood, sulfer, money etc. to allow you to buy monsters and build more to your castle (to allow you to buy bigger and better monsters, normally).

The game was so in-depth that you could literally start up the game, and within what felt like an hour... it was actually time to be heading back to bed, despite the fact you've not yet had lunch, let alone dinner. I'd play it more if it wasn't for the fact it's PC only (and I dun really play PC games due to needing to turn MSN off to do so, lol, tho' if anyone knows how to force games to open in a window regardless, lemme know!)

8.
Wrestlefest - Arcade
Okay, I've said No Mercy was the best wrestling game ever, and I still stand by that, however as a kid I still remember pumping 50p's into this machine with a mate.

It was so loveable because it was so simple, there were two modes, Royal Rumble, and Saturday Nights Main Event.

Saturday Nights Main Event was basically an overblown tag team tournament, you picked two wrestlers (it was weird seeing one guy pick Hogan & Slaughter... two enemies at the time... kayfabe people!) and fought through the roster until you came up to The Legion Of Doom, who you fought for the tag titles. I've heard after you beat them you just loop right back round and continue, I've never known that as I never got past match two...

Royal Rumble was the one I tended to pick, mainly 'cause it was so much more fun in my opinion, mebbe partially 'cause I was actually good at this part of the game, unlike the tag team part. The idea was (for those of you less wrestling savvy on here) to launch everyone else out of the ring via the top rope. This meant pretty much either doing a grapple to launch them out, or the preferred favourite... whip to the ropes, back body drop them out (Got 3 in succession once with ol' Mr Perfect ^_^). Played it about a year back on an arcade emulator on the PC, and it was just as good as it was back then.

7.
Killer Instinct - SNES
Yes, it was on the arcade too, I don't care, I only played the arcade version once (and I'll mention that later), however this was the first ever game (making a total of two... the other being Mario Party 4) that I've stayed up all night with a mate playing.

Before the internet, you had 3 ways of finding out moves for beat-em ups.
1 - Phone a help line... pricey, and 99% of the time done behind a parents back.
2 - Hope that the latest gaming mag has them in it.
3 - Spend a loooong time doing trial and error.

We stayed up all night learning the moves for EVERY character and writing them down. Cinder is still my favourite because we nailed his first (not 'cause his was the easiest, tho' it was, but because we just picked him first and worked down), eventually we had every combo breaker, ultra, etc. in the game jotted down, and it was at that point we realized that it was daylight out (t'was my sisters SNES, we were in her room, and she was out at her mates for the night, so we hadn't realized).

Despite the light... we kept playing, and come midday, I headed into my room for "a quick rest" and outright collapsed in a heap on the bed. Eventually woke up, went into my sisters room, mate was still playing, he hands me the controller, and proceeds to just collapse right there. Never done THAT since, definitely an engrossing game :D.

About the arcade bit... different mate from London, I was off down to visit, and he's amazing at pretty much any game you give him, kicked my ass on everything... and was telling me how good he was at K.I. in the arcade... (he didn't have a SNES...) So I agree to give him a quick game... and proceed to wipe the floor with him in a super fashion, to the point he just kinda let me get on with the one player game until I died a couple of guys on (hey, it's tough changing from joypad to joystick!)

6.
Donkey Kong Country
I was originally going to put number 2 in here... until as I was about to write it I realized that number 2 wouldn't have been made, had number 1 not been so damned awesome, and while number 2 is possibly the better of the series (DKC 64 should never be mentioned ever again!) It's only marginally better than number 1 in gameplay terms, so DKC 1 just edges past in terms of upping the bar as a whole.

I remember when we first got the game, (Like I say... sisters SNES, not mine), and for once, me, my sister, and my Mum, all sat down to play a game together (normally it was just me and my Mum playing Bubble Bobble, Wonderboy, or Skweek), and that was us done for the day. We weren't moving.

The fact you had so much to search for in the game in the bonus areas, (and how much fun were those animal bonus areas? The Ostrich one was great fun... I wish they'd kept that thing in the following games), and the fact that the game, while difficult, wasn't stupidly tought. Combine all that with a good sense of comedy (it ripped on itself so much thanks to Cranky, that nobody up at Rare was taking themselves seriously during the programming of it), and you had the greatest game on the SNES ever.

Numbers 5 through 1 (plus a couple of honorable mentions to come in the next post)

Resident Evil 4 - Wii
Already mentioned in this thread, but as of right now, it's the best game on the Wii. Not played the game on any other console, but there's no way it can stand up to the completion of the Wii version. It includes (As far as I'm aware) all the bonus stuff from the other versions, AND has the whole "point and shoot" aspect which makes it all the more fun when you score a perfect headshot with the sniper rifle.

It just "feels" so real when you're shooting at enemies on screen, and the fear level is seriously heightened when playing at night (admittedly the fact my house is haunted helps that... but even so...), One of the few games I've played clean through in two days (as in a game that took a fair sized chunk of that time, as opposed to stupidly short games that can be completed that quick regardless), and then gone back to again and again.

Going through Seperate Ways and unlocking The Chicago Typewriter was awesome. Especially when you play through the main game after nabbing it, and managing to wipe out boss number 1 before his legs hit the ground. Easily the Wii's best game up til now.

Sonic Adventure - Dreamcast
Until tonight, every time someone said "what's your favourite game?" I'd answer this, however tonight I've seriously thought about what games I love, and while this is still up there... it's just not "that" good, to be number 1.

I know a ton of people had problems with the games glitches, and I'll admit, running along and suddenly vanishing through a hole in the floor that's not actually there... is effing annoying, but if I'm honest, those glitches were few and far between, at most I got one a day (and I played that game to death when I picked it up).

The fact you had 6 playable characters, was great in itself (yes, BIG The Cat and his fishing was annoying after a while, but it was short anyway, and Amy did get on my nerves. However E-102, Knuckles, Tails & Sonic owned in their levels), throw in the amazing Chaos (which worked with the VMU... the amount of trouble I got in at work as I would walk into work playing it, go upstairs, get changed, and walk DOWN playing it, sit at my checkout, and when it wasn't busy, just pop the thing out to feed it and such... some customers gave me weird looks when it would beep while in my pocked).

Then to top it off, possibly the best video game soundtrack ever (No, Guitar Hero doesn't count, those songs weren't made specifically for the game :P). Open Your Heart is the best song for a game ever, as it's so powerful and works amazingly well, to the point I actually died on the final boss about ten times because I was too busy rocking out to the music, lol.

Unfortunately, after all this time, I've got to admit that I'd be unable to pick it up now and seriously play it to unlock everything again. Hence it's drop to number 4.

Final Fantasy 8 - PSX
Sorry FF7 fanboys, but that game just don't live up to number 8.

I'll admit number 7 did in fact have some awesome stuff in it. But Cloud was an annoying little *** and that whole dream stuff with Tifa was just "please... kill me" boring.

Number 8 on the other hand had much improved graphics (graphics don't make a game I'll admit that, but the contrast between 7 and 8 was amazing), had much better character advancement (Squall and Seifer's arguing and such becoming more and more throughout), had some great comedy lines (normally involving Seifer and Zell), and mini game wise... there's not another game out there with a mini game to rival Triple Triad.

I mean, seriously, that was an entire game by itself, screw your Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Ho (or however ya spell it), gimmie Triple Triad any day of the week (okay... it doesn't beat Magic The Gathering... but we'll ignore that), I'd spend hours just playing that... then when I'm bored... I move right onto FF8's main game, when I fancy a change from that, head right back into Triple Triad.

Such an engrossing plot and only one small annoyance stops it hitting the top... That pissing sewer section... easily the most annoying part of the game, it was just way too drawn out, I understand it was to help us level up a chunk, but it was DULL! Despite that tho', awesome, awesome game.

Doom - PC/PSX
Got both versions (depending on if I'm needed on MSN, and can be bothered to climb to get at my PS2... it sounds weird, but trust me on this, my room's tiny, I have to climb over stuff to get IN the thing, let alone move anywhere else), and both versions rock (tho' the PC version is prolly better 'cause of all the custom levels you can play).

Probably the first game that actually made me jump from stuff going on in it, be it from your first time in Tower Of Babel, when you hear the loud "CLUNK CLUNK CLUNK" noises outside, only to open a door and see this right big bastard with a rock launcher for an arm staring at you, until half a second later you're splattered across the floor from it, or from charging up a set of stairs, only for the wall ahead of you to go bye bye, leaving you staring into a bright red Cacodemon, with only a pistol for company. (at which point I jumped and smacked my head into the damned wall).

Everything about this game was perfect, making it the best FPS made, to date. Unlike a lot of the more recent ones, there was no struggling to see who was attacking you (okay the transparant demons were gits, but still kinda visable), because they merge with background, or hide behind ledges so you can't see them. There was no messing about trying to get the positining right, leaving yourself open to attack. Nope, this was simply "turn and fire".

And then, to top it off... multiplayer! One of the early ones... and one of the best memories of the PSX link cable. Just being able to pump lead into your best mate was amazing, and the fact you could pull it off with one disc with a bit of swapping was great too... tho' it would've been nice if, in the instructions for this, they'd said "Warning: Disc Swap with good music only"... as when we first did it, we grabbed the first available CD... how was I to know the music would play directly FROM the CD?

Trust me... trying to blow people up with The Spice Girls playing just doesn't feel right.

Guitar Hero 2 - PS2
Okay, it might seem like the whole "you're only saying that" thing, but seriously, I've not met a game where, after... what is it now? 9 months at least, so after 9 months since release, I'm STILL able to pick it up and rock out on it.

With an amazing soundtrack, (and through some good editing skillz, the ability to add your own, woot!) and... ah screw it, the only thing really needed in this game WAS the soundtrack, everything else is meaningless, and while just playing the game against a black background would be annoying to watch, the end result is... those of us doing the strumming don't care, we're just enjoying playing the game.

If Rock Band is anywhere near the fun level of GH2 (and I'm not doubting it for a second) I can see that being at this position this time next year, but until then... GH2 has to get the nod.

Honerable Mentions:
Command & Conquer - Red Alert
Link Cable + Capture The Flag + Sneaking in when your mates getting ambushed by the PC = one very pissed off mate, but one great bit of laughter from you.

Vib Ribbon
Put in your own music CD, and start jumping over some crudely drawn (but still very fun) shapes.

WWF: With Authority
It's a trading card game, on a PC, featuring wrestlers... and in Beta testing, BOY was I good at that game. Unfortunatley, like all good card games, they released way too much too quick, and a ton of people said "sod this, I can't keep up", and then to top it off, WWE pulled the plug, 'cause they were releasing roster members who's cards were still on sale, and this caused a big conflict for them... Shame really.

Final Fantasy 8 - PSX
Sorry FF7 fanboys, but that game just don't live up to number 8.

But the villian in that game was ******ed. What was her motivation, time compression? And the one time they address this in the game, some scientist says "there are many reasone she may want to acheive time compression, but let's not get into that right now..." or some crap like that.

I finally came to the conslusion that the crazy B lost her car keys and decided that if all off time were compressed to a quantum singularity she could go to any point at which she remembered where they had existed to find them.

And junctioning was broken. You could beat the game without ever leveling. Although that could be argued for a reason the game is better, I suppose.
