I remade the other one, because the guy that posted it went inactive. If you see anything out of place, tell me.

This is copied from the other list, since the other list was good. I added a few bands.

Songs that are lacking an instrument are ok. They could be DLC or bonus songs, or on that instruments career.

Actually, what is this list for?

Anyway, I miss the bands of my sig.

The Cure (probably New Wave or something), Bloc Party, Placebo (both Alternative, I guess) and Stars and Death Cab For Cute (both either Alternative or Indie...).
Oh, and even Angels & Airwaves (Alternative) and blink-182 (eh..punk?)

Eman311

311

alternative or rap/rock

Rev0lver

i'm not exactly sure where i would place it, but i've never seen protest the hero in the same list with lamb of god and black dahlia murder. they're not metalcore.

edit: wtf NIN in alternative??? make an industrial/industrial metal section with them, fear factory, manson, celldweller, etc

also, maybe a mathcore section, with bands like Psyopus, August Burns Red, The Human Abstract, Between The Buried and Me, etc.

Updated

Keep the suggestions, and corrections coming.

Also, if you can, put it in a list like

Genre
band
band
band

it's easier to copy.

EDIT:

You sure got rid of the jazz section fast, hahahahahaha.

OOps I did? I don't remember deleting it. I deleted Nu metal.

We need some reggae mon! Jammin by Bob Marley would be nice for the game or No Woman No Cry.

If people aren't sick of that "typical" song by mutemath, that song is rocking. Or should it be saved in case of a keytar hero? hah. I guess they would be under alternative.

And british beef is a good pop punk band that isnt too widely known, a song like "without me"

But i think that ska and reggae bands like sublime, pepper, 311 and slightly stoopid should def have representation in this game

I added the cure. I'll add the others soon. Look at New Wave/Post Punk.

Also, mars volta is experimental. Thats why they are in that list.

You should bold/italicize/underline/do something to the genre headers to make them stand out from the lists of bands.

Yeah, I was planning on that. I keep forgetting though. Might as well do it now.

Well, originally it just said jazz with nothing under it :D I was going through the jazz'ists' that I listen to today and realized there is almost nothing with vocals. Shame, really.

I dig the variety in your lists. I've been digging Silversun Pickups and Better than Ezra(even more than usual) lately so I'd throw them in, but that's just me. I would also take the time to add some grindcore/goregrind, but it's a lost cause so I won't bother ;)

This isn't really mine. It's everyone's who posted and suggested. I add some songs I like, and manage it. But thanks anyway. Better than ezra and silversun are what genre?

ObsceneReality
08-30-2007, 01:03 PM
You could throw them under either indie or rock, it's basically your choice. I would say indie is a slightly more accurate representation. If you have classic rock and Sweet isn't on there I'd add that spectacular band too :)

Also add Pavement to Indie and Stone Roses to Brit-pop, please. :)

But you've written Death Cab For Cute instead of Death Cab For Cutie. ;)

Oh, and you could still add Stars to Indie.

Updated. Fixed a few things too, and added a Classic Rock section for general rock from the 65-80s time period that doesn't fit anywhere else.

Ha, cool you continued my thread. Btw, the original point for it was a reference for people to go look at when making setlists so that they could give a balanced and more varied setlist, as I noticed loads of people on the guitar hero forums used to always ask for suggestions to their setlists and always ended up with setlists that were one genre only.

I also made the original list to place some kind of order on which bands go where concerning genres, as a lot of people have no clue that half the bands most people think are metal are most likely metalcore, which is only related to metal in name. (its really heavy punk). Or they think some random rock band should be considered hard rock or something.

GrayInvisible, be careful to research people suggestions, as they tend to try and complain about genres and artists when there really is no argument/or the artist can be considered multiple genres.
Also, for your metal queries: www.metal-archives.com
Try not to use wikipedia too much as well for research, it tends to be unreliable, as you should know.

Theres also some people who dont READ THE LIST and continue to ask for bands they couldnt be bothered to find on the list/or are in a place they wouldnt expect them to be. So, dont feel bad if they accuse you of ignoring them, they are the ignorant ones for not reading properly.

Good luck trying to keep up with updates and ranty people!
Oh, and Im glad you and other people think my original list was so good, really appreciate the appreciation!

Glad you're back. Yeah, I moved a few questionable entries, but I'm not too well versed in metal. I use wikipedia as a source. I'll check out that site. What's as as the metal subgenres is the the onslaught of Alternative and Indie bands. There are so many.

Teenage Fanclub - Brit-pop
Dodgy - Brit-pop
Mr. T Experience - Punk Rock
Screeching Weasel - Punk rock

Fishbone is a hard band to decipher, as they essentially play a bunch of genres, so maybe Alternative would make the most sense.

Not at all sure about the placement of a LOT of those bands (and there being a post-metal section but no post-rock section). Whatever, largely irrelevant.

I'd also like to see Russian Circles (post-metal), Skyclad (folk metal), Robert Johnson (blues), Pure Reason Revolution (prog/indie), The Cramps or The Meteors (not both, both are psychobilly), Slint (post-rock), Bloodbath (death metal) and Supertramp (prog). Though the latter's a bit hard to implement. There's more I'd like to see (27 and American Watercolor Movement come to mind) but I'd like to remain even remotely within the realms of feasibility. Also Gogol Bordello would be cool but probably impossible to implement.

Anyway, I'd like to see:
