Anyone seen the "n00b" guide recently? You know the rehash of information for those who already know and for the noobs the sole purpose being
it's about giving them one less excuse.
Well, this is me saying a big fat NO to noob bashing. Notice the siggy down below this post. I would be happy to see it become commonplace.
These are OAPs (Old Aged Posters, or OAFs by miketoast). I know I've done bad stuff, but attacking noobs is just low. They say they have all these posts under their hats, but ultimately it is just people looking for mod status. Thats basically it. These OAPs create the most basic threads, like "lets clean up our forums" or "the n00b guide".
I say these guides are unnecessary. Like the OAPs/OAFs even admitted, no matter what the n00bs are going to make this mistake, with or without pointless, rubbish-attempt-at-humour-meanwhile-ridiculing-n00bs threads, so I fine this a travesty within our forums. And no, this isn't for mod, this is because n00bs are getting too much blame on these forums.
And the worst thing is, is what happens if these OAPs get mod? Threads are going to locked in seconds, an over protective forum, and where did we see that before? (Well I have, some others may not).
Please, do your best to make sure the supposedly superior OAPs stop their stupid n00b bashing and answer the question politefully, like everyone else.

Stop being a troublemaker
You're taking this too seriously, it is simply one stickied thread.
also, my post count may be high, but in no way am I shooting for "mod"
Maybe you feel this is primarily other people, but whatever get off their back. People post here because the community is great and the anticipation for Rock Band is high.
Now, I feel you're a good member of this forum, don't turn this thread into a flame war. Which it very well may end up being.

This is another. Its happening a lot. Look at any threads which may have previously written answers and were created by noobs - OF COURSE its a noobish thing to do, but thats why they're noobs, because they're still to learn the forum.
Just give em a friggin chance.

Look at the person who made it, not exactly a credible member quite yet.
Also notice my response in that thread.

The OP is obviously a troll. Don't feed them.
For every noob question, just link the n00b survival guide. Shouldn't waste the energy to try to tell them to read it.
Perfect example. What if he was a noob? Oh no... hes a "troll". Yes, because anyone who has a question and missed a little sticky is automatically a "troll"
And yes, thats why I said "I know I've done bad things before". But I've been here for long enough to realise whats happening, and I felt it neccesary to post. Fine, let it become a flame war and become locked, but at least a small minority would have realised what these OAFs are trying to do.

I have to agree. No matter what we do people are going to pop in and post the same questions over and over without reading the guide or anything else. All I'm saying is that instead of insulting them or flaming them just don't answer them or post in that thread. Sooner or later they'll get the hint and either leave or look elsewhere for their answer (the guide). If however it makes you a bigger man/woman to insult people because they ask a question YOU deem irrelevant or unimportant or whatever then you are the one that needs the help finding the answers homeboy.....

You know what though? I'd like to see a general guide for n00bs. Just one though: you know all the acronyms for everything? FTW, AFAIK, IMHO, etc... someone should just write an all-encompassing guide that explains what all those mean. 9/10 times you'll get it from context, but there's a new shortened half-sentence every week, and when you get old like me, it gets harder and harder to decipher. You kids and your Rock 'N Roll music...
NOTE: I know what those particular acronyms mean; I was looking to give some examples. I really don't need those ones explained
DOUBLE NOTE: Seriously, don't explain those three to me, because I know what they mean. Still, somebody should write a guide to all those terms though.

Let's just put this all into perspective. You're saying anyone that puts up something to stop the flooding of useless threads is just a failed attempt at trying to be a mod? I'm sorry, that just isn't right. We, or in this case Xyliac, just wanted to, as I said, stop the flooding of pointless threads. Because when we don't answer their questions right away, they get mad. As someone said before, it's not anyone new to the forums, it's just idiots who want a quick answer. I would know, I used to be this kind of person.
Here's what happens...Someone mentions Rock Band, the idiot is not intrigued. He searches on unreliable sites and huge video game sites like Gamespot. He doesn't find when it's coming out or how much it all is, so he wants a quick answer. So he finds the official site, still doesnt find it, so he goes to the forum in absolute desperation. Makes the absolute quickest Username he could think of, usually something like "iamthegreatest1337". Then makes the infamous post "wen dos rock band come out?? how much monney it cost??"
Then there's the guy who thinks "I have a great idea, I have to type it in as fast as possible so the guys making the game will see it and put it in before they finish the game!" They rush to the forums, make the same noobish Username, and type in as fast as they can "u shood put in dbl bass petel!!"
It's a mistake that can't be avoided. But we just want to try to prevent it from happening. It's like when you buy a Fire Extinguisher. It's not going to stop your house from catching on fire, but it help to have one just in case.
You need to stop making accusations and just let people at least try to help out the forums. And I agree, the thread you posted is absolute garbage. But the ones like the "n00b survival guide" are actually a major contribution to the site.

Did you even read that whole thread? The guy asked a question, simple enough "Does my GH3 controller work for Rock Band?" It's been asked a thousand times, no problem. Someone kindly instructed him to the "survival guide" no response came from him to the answers he was getting.
Then he asked another question "are the bundled controllers wired?" People answered his question. He was instructed to the guide a second time. Obviously if he read it the first time someone mentioned it, he wouldn't have asked the 2nd question.
Judging that his username was also mikeymikeymikeymikey, patterns tend to occur with trolls. He never responded to the people who helped him, never said thank you, nothing. Just asked repeated questions, he knows they have been asked a million times, he did it on purpose.
I support the "give noobs a chance". Obviously everyone is a noob at first, me too. I'm not on a high horse, nor do I suck up to HMX and wanna be a mod or some crap. I could care less what my post count is, I've already deleted my profile once before, big whoop.
I don't bash "noobs" I don't even like to use the word, and I never do. It's overplayed and ignorant. Your shot at me was just because I didn't appreciate you bashing Xzyliac for his "guide". Yea he may have used the word "noob" excessively, but his intentions were good.
Yes, a lot of people do overreact when they see a repeated question. But the best thing to do is just answer it, or direct them to where they can get that answer. I let other people answer the "noob" questions. I know I don't have to. Some people do flip out a little too easily.
We should be happy there's more and more people interested in the game. Let's enlighten them, and hopefully it will be more people to play the game with! I don't like arguing on forums, it's childish and pointless. In a perfect world, we'd all agree on everything.

I like your fire extinguisher simile. I'd like to offer a simile of my own: It's like ordering a pizza an hour and a half before you think you'll be hungry, so by the time it gets to your apartment, you've only been hungry for like 25 minutes.
Seriously though, I think, for the most part, writing n00b guides (aside from the one I talked about above) is fairly useless. You have to keep in mind: new to this forum is not the same as new to the internet. Chances are they've posted somewhere before, and they're just ignoring etiquette because it doesn't serve their purposes.

The majority agree thank you.
Even those who have made these "OAP anti-noob posts and guides" agree with me, and that means that their intentions were good, maybe not another mod seeker (I still think there are several users after mod on here, but I won't personally name because it would constitute flaming).
Those who want to help, like us all - before posting, re-read. Could it be interpretated by the noob as negative? Will they still want to be on this forum afterwards? etc.
And thank you for reading

2) I've never made "the best gh custom". Thats Julio.
And for whatever idiot earlier said "I was trying to get my name onto every post", er... NO! I looked at the posts I wanted to voice my opinion on, 6 of em. And because I posted, they appeared at the top.

But it's good to see random stuff like that. It gets boring seeing the same posts and topics over and over.

If you think it's bad now, wait a few months. As Rock Band's popularity increases, the flood of unruly posters and noob posters will only increase. Eventually, I expect it will reach a critical mass like it did on the "official" GH boards. Once that happens, it will only drive off the good posters leaving only the flamers and morons in a sort of degenerative perma flame war.
The only way to really stem this from experience is through a ton of hard-assed, iron-fisted moderation. And quite honestly, Sean has better things he could be doing than moderating boards 24/7. I think it would improve things to have some additional moderating eyes on the board, but I respect that they probably want to keep that privilage close-to-the-vest.

*sigh*. I rattle the cage, the ******s find a way out. No wonder I get attacked.
And to get back on topic, which you all went off, something your precious mods don't like...
This perfectly describes n00b guides.
http://uncyclopedia.org/wiki/UnBooks:The_n00b_Survival_Guide
And the forums will go one of two ways.
1) The OAPs (almost everyone whos posted on this page) will become mods and take total control, thus rendering it pointless, and banning threads at every step. No one below 20 posts will be allowed in, i.e., membership will be banned only from those the OAPs agree with.
2) The noob bashing will continue, but to a lesser degree than 1) and when confronted with a 14 year old thats actually smarter than them they will flame and pretend that I'm automatically wrong because of my age. Similar to 1)'s "membership will be banned only from those the OAPs agree with.", the OAPs will continue to flame al those they don't like, thus, doing their non-mod equivelent of banning, thus making membership pointless.

Thx Marty,
I am the "someone" who kindly told him to read the Noob Guide, he deliberately didn't read the Guide and then posted another question that would have been answered if he would have read it the first time. So I asked him again, I even gave him a direct link. I never insulted him, I wasn't mean, I never called him a noob, I tried to help him and he didn't take it. So why am I being accused of Noob Bashing?
I guess you (GH2Master) are still mad from when that dude made the infamous thread about you. Which I can understand, but I defended you when people said you should be banned. But I am starting to think you should be, all you do is start trouble.

Now here are my posts in the SAME thread...
Read the stickied Noob Guide before posting a new thread pls.

That post was from when myself was a noob. This was back in my early early early days, when it was easier to aggrevate you and I was more black and white about things.
I think babypenguin maybe I got the wrong end of the stick, but your misquoting shows that you're not a "noob basher". But you still have this, how shall i say... tone to your threads that patronises the "noob" further. You used the same tone here, and you used the same earlier.
Be nicer, and just because they picked a predictable username doesn't mean they're a troll. And a noob is going to make the mistake no matter how many people put "VISIT THE DAMN NOOB GUIDE" in their siggy.
It was nice of Xyzliac and all those involved to take the time to write it, but it ended up making the situation worse IMHO, giving the "OAPs" (I know this isnt the nicest way to approach the veterans, but it seperates the veterans from the noob bashers) more ammunition.
Oh and the earlier calls for an acronym guide... I'm all for that :D heck I'll write it myself, but my CSS l33t speak can only take me so far haha

Noobs deserve to be bashed because they don't take the time to read up on the topic of the forum they join. I was well informed about Rock Band long before I came here. The fact that it's a fun community drew me in even more.
Noob sympathisers should take into consideration how annoying it is when someone asks a question that's been answered a million times.

Here, let me quote myself when "The_Polite_Force" said he deserves to be a mod:
yawn just cuz i have different views doesn't mean i know when and how to close threads that needs closing, moving threads, and such. you really need a new definition of mod *******
You must have no idea of what a mod is supposed to be. It's more than just "Locking threads and moving ****". It's a position of authority. And anything you disagree with, you get pissed and go on a rant. Don't even TRY to deny it. Someone says "I like metal, and a lot of it, what kind of mp3 holds a lot of music?" and you freak out, calling them close minded and insulting them. Knowing you, you'd ban half the people on the forum and lock almost all of the threads that you don't like. "i hate acdc. locked". To be a mod, you have to be respected and open-minded. Okay, you hate AC/DC. You don't see me going on rants about how much your music sucks. I gave my honest answer, an iPod. You say:
well 256 mb sounds about right since ur so closeminded u wont need a huge mp3 player for ur music
Joking or not, (Probably not). People will take offense, for a good reason. Now, they will take offense, and most likely say "What the hell?". You'll get pissed and go on another rant.
NOT moderator material.
Moderators are a symbol that you deserved that spot. You will kindly answer questions and if it turns into flaming between some members, you will lock it. A moderator should NEVER lock a thread for it being a bad question. A moderator should only lock threads that have no use being in the forum. The "noobs" give honest questions. We should give honest answers, followed by a link to the guide. Because as someone (Sorry, I forget who said it) said, we don't want people posting more than one bad question. Like that "mikeymikeymikey" kid. He started about 3 or 4 threads asking questions that were already answered in the survival guide. You know how that would have been avoided? Simply linking him to the guide and then saying something along the lines of "Please read that all the way through and you will find the answers to any of your Rock Band questions." And lock the thread to prevent future flaming from the hot-headed members.
A Mod should NEVER say something like "omg noob stop asking dum dum kwestions!! lokked nd banned!!"
That would be the sign of a terrible mod...I only use that grammar there to emphasize how bad they would be as a mod...

Julio, good response, I see where you're coming from, just, maybe, be a little lighter on them? If you could. I understand you dabble in the fine arts of "noob answering", something I don't get myself involved in, but sometimes you gotta stand back and look at the situation unbiasly. "Why didn't he read the guide to noobs? Well, maybe he's new. Maybe he doesn't read stickys on a forum. Maybe he's new to forums. etc." but yes I know where you're coming from.
Akaymay, definitely someone I can trust for decent information on a situation. You explain the perfect mod brilliantly, but I'm just worried that (some of those) OAPs are noob-bashing for this mod position, and I like that you step back from the situation and you do not bias your own quote. What you said was correct.
Thank you very much. Brightened up this thread a lot for your incitive and interesting posts (honestly, I'm saying something positive without sarcasm, a first for me! :P)
Keep it coming.

I, along with Julio, was very educated before I came to the site and read the FAQ. If we bash every newbie that comes in, we wont get new people anymore.
That being said, Penguin has a point. That dude was trolling. He was ignoring the helpful hint of "go see the guide." He wasn't even creative and asked another dumb question. It seemed like he read the guide just to get an idea for his next question.
There is a fine line between troll and n00b.... A troll and a n00b both ask dumb questions... the hard part is telling who is asking a serious question or just being an ass

I mean, I never read the FAQ with the game. I read wikipedia, cos I saw what HMX were doing, cos I've played like tons of their games, and it linked to this website. I knew all I needed to know, except a few questions which were just not confirmed....
I personally recommend WikiPedia for information. Its noobbashing free.

*sigh* havent we got more important social questions like "why are the poor getting poorer and the rich getting richer" and why is 75% of the wealth of britain being controlled by only 10% of the population...
I can put that quote in nearly every thread you make.. Which could take me a little bit.

That post was from when myself was a noob. This was back in my early early early days, when it was easier to aggrevate you and I was more black and white about things.
excuse me? that quote was from yesterday. Have you had some 24 hour awakening? I don't think so.
I agree, I do notice that I subconsciously add a "tone" that may piss off a noob, but I can't help that.
I never said anyone was a troll, I didn't even know what a troll was until yesterday when I looked it up.
My sig doesn't say "VISIT THE DAMN NOOB GUIDE" it says "Xzyl's Noob Guide (read this)", that isn't mean at all, it is a suggestion.
It was nice of Xyzliac and all those involved to take the time to write it, but it ended up making the situation worse IMHO, giving the "OAPs" (I know this isnt the nicest way to approach the veterans, but it seperates the veterans from the noob bashers) more ammunition.
More ammunition?!? You are trying to make it sound like we are attacking noobs, all we are doing is giving them a link to the thread. No bullets, no explosions, no flaming, just a link.

Like I said, less you, more others. Look, whatever I say nothing will change so I leave this with the thought "it failed, but at least I tried". I hope you're all right, i hope the forums will avoid the "noob holocaust" but I dunno...
I think the main problem is identifying noobs from trolls, as said earlier. We get that right, and we're a bit nicer (see Julio's post) then we'll be ok. Maybe. I hope. :(

ababypenguin 1-0 crushing generalisation :P
But i still stand by that we need to stop this "noob bashing", even if my "severe forum crisis" wasn't so severe after all.

Anyone seen the "n00b" guide recently? You know the rehash of information for those who already know and for the noobs the sole purpose being
Well, this is me saying a big fat NO to noob bashing.
Please, do your best to make sure the supposedly superior OAPs stop their stupid n00b bashing and answer the question politefully, like everyone else.
and your saying this but you were the one bashing me when i attempted to compliment someone

Maybe youyourself gh2master is just jealous of others who have been members since near the forums opened up. Maybe you should realize that this post was very helpful. Not because they want "mod status" thats just an excuse. They're(including myself, and others) are tired of the same reppetative posts over and over. Maybe if they really wanted information they would check alittle more into things.Such as watching the 40 minute video, reading some other posts(ie:the N00B SURVIVAL GUIDE ahem...This isn't abuse, thy're abuse. And the GUIDE is like the counciler, giving them words of comfort, and helping them deal with the problem...

Huh? Did you do that thread all about someone who really helped you or something? I remember thinking "n00b go and read the faqs that'll tell you all the information not these senior members". Don't we change over time?
Plz those who I lovingly referred to as OAPs I wish to publicise my thread "A Flame Free but Volatile Discussion", its actually political, but only "OAPs" are gonna get it.
Or wait for it to die and I'll rename it and then people will see it.
