Where is this list from??
And WTF is The Who doing at 39?? They belong in the top 10. Kick public enemy out, then give Bob Marley their spot (until I can work something better out) and Put The Who at #4.
Edit: And Switch Led Zeppelin and the Ramones. Then switch the Ramones with The Who.

WTF?! AC/DC Glam/hair metal? I think you need to do some research on what exactly glam/hair metal is.

This is exactly why I claim the beatles are overrated. They were a great band, but almost everyone puts them #1.
Anyway, this list is a joke.

AC/DC were esentially Hair Metal. All their songs were about chasing babes and/or rocking out.

Ummm...no. By no means am I an AC/DC nutswinger but they were/are in no way shape or form at all similair to hair metal. Not even close. Hanoi Rocks, Poison, Warrant, Winger, Cinderella, Ratt etc were glam or hair metal.
AC/DC falls under the Hard Rock/Metal category. One could argue blues based hard rock not unlike Aerosmith or Led Zep. But hair metal? Nope they didn't have the sound nor the image of it. In fact they got rid of their original frontman because they felt he was to influenced by glam rock.

Ok, mabye you're right. Van Halen were the first hair band.

Certainly some bands took some of the foundations laid out by AC/DC, I'll give ya that one.;)
The first true hair metal band was Hanoi Rocks though. They took what David Bowie did mixed in with the New York Dolls and bingo! Hair or Glam Metal was born.
Here's their first single from 1981 I Want You

The Who and Pink Floyd are worse than ACDC?
ACDC had one song and released it a billion times in different keys with a different lyric.
Rush?
I don't really like Van Halen but I think they should be somewhere on that list.
Queen?
If this was Rolling stone it really hurts their credibility

I hate this list. And I'm surprised anyone would put Korn on a top 50 bands of all time list, and I say that as a Korn fan. But I generally choose to stay away from top whatever-number music-related topics lists. I had a falling out after top songs of the 80's or something like that.

Nobody's pointed out the lack of Aerosmith, quite possibly the greatest American Band out there. Don't flame me for that. If my opinion is different from yours, don't rip my head off for it. But seriously, how many other bands are getting an entire game devoted to them! Guitar Hero Aerosmith! woot! yeah... they should be up there too.

Rolling Stone has always hated Queen so id say they made this cause there not even on the list. Hello people! 300 Million albums world wide i dont think you sell that many albums by being bad lol.

album sales don't mean anything britney spears albums sell more than the velvet underground (Only sold about 1000 copies of their debue in the first year) but which is better and more influential?

Yeah, if this is from Rolling Stone, that would explain the lack of Iron Maiden, Rush, and Queen. Rolling Stone is largely a joke, and they never like anything out of the mainstream. Why Aerosmith isn't on this list though, if it really is Rolling Stone, is beyond me.

I like that they place sly and funkadelic so high up but the rest of it is really wacky.

Ok but still Queen was hugely influential and had one of the greatest singers of all time and the 39th best guitarist of all time(rolling stone) not to mention the only band in the song writers hall of fame..

Yea my dad said the best concert he ever saw was a Queen concert. He said it was very entertaining and the put on an amazing show. Although unlukly he had to wait outside a Who concert with keith moon that might have topped it lol. Damn I wish I was born in 1960

You ever heard of dyslexia? I can barely read what you posted. Anyhow, Queen required a lot of electricity and synthesizers, which was fine for huge gigs. When it was their average live concert where they couldn't synthesize a lot of the stuff like Freddy's voice, it sounded like garbage. Either that or the live albums my friend gave me were really early stuff. Find a random live bootleg, and you'll notice really bad tempo drops, and Freddy will go far out of key for quite some time. I'm not denying that they made good music (I've enjoyed a lot of their albums), but if a band can't perform to their top without sound-altering synthesizers, they're at a loss to others.

Lack of The Stone Roses especially if they're to include The Smiths meanwhile they added Korn is sickening. It's like taboo to mention The Smiths and not mention The Stone Roses to some degree, and vice versa if you were to mention The Stone Roses.

True, Freddie wasn't always in top form live (if you had his range, you would understand), but to call Queen live a trainwreck? Please. Did you really just say that?

Beatles, Marley, Zepplin- Kicked off of Top 10 (They can stay if you want)
And why did Korn make it and not Linkin Park? They aren't that good... (But I do have a specific love for them)
And Beach Boys is the only one I shall attack specifically saying they should be gone. Though many others should be too.
And I appreciate The Ramones as #2

Without The Beach Boys The Beatles wouldn't have tried so hard to be as innovative as they were. Not to mention they were and are a good band period. Therefore they have every right to be on the list. /Discussion

It's just that putting Zeppelin in the Top 4 is somewhat overblowing their "talent". Top 10 I can see, but not Top 4. Same with those other bands. The Beatles are the only ones mentioned that deserve Top 4 (seeing as how they deserve 1 or 2). The Who had two or three good albums, the rest are mixed bags. The Rolling Stones are the most disgustingly overrated band I've ever heard. Mick Jagger sings flat. All of the time. He kills every song they've ever done.

Well that's true, but some bands live really just play like they did on the record. They may do it great, but it's still the record. Then there are the bands that improvise, stretch, shake the set list up, try new material. Those are the bands I mean, and there are several good ones like that on that list.

Well, for me, a live performance doesn't need to include all sorts of improvisation in order to be truly great. As long as a band can re-create the studio sound live, then that for me makes a great live performance. It irks me that alot of the bands out today (there are only a few exceptions, such as Shinedown and Kamelot) that sound great on record, and then you see them live, and it's like, WTF happened, you know? This is one of the reasons Iron Maiden (for me) has transcended into the ranks of the immortal bands. To this day they sound fantastic live, much better now, in fact, than they have since the World Piece Tour. If a band wants to throw all sorts of drum solos and other such improv pieces my way, that's fine, but for me it will never affect whether or not the performance was a classic.
nicholasenj
03-29-2008, 08:55 PM
the aforementoined recreation of the album sound is the main reason why I put Maiden ahead of Metallica. apart from that, the only thing that went into the order there was the order they came to mind. if I redid it, I would probably put Maiden much higher.

If a band wants to throw all sorts of drum solos and other such improv pieces my way, that's fine, but for me it will never affect whether or not the performance was a classic.
Different strokes... I do totally agree, tho', if you can't do it live you lose my respect. And that means real playing for me -- I'll accept sequencers, but I prefer live playing.

the aforementoined recreation of the album sound is the main reason why I put Maiden ahead of Metallica. apart from that, the only thing that went into the order there was the order they came to mind. if I redid it, I would probably put Maiden much higher.
I think Metallica deserves a handicap in the live performance aspect since they now have Trujillo (who I personally like better than Cliff [don't murder me!]) who has a different style than Jason and who they actually let sound like a bass instead of over distorting it like Cliff did, and Hetfield blew out his voice, so he can't really sing with grit anymore. Poor them. Still love 'em though.

Seeing as how there is no prog or Queen, I can asure you Rolling Stone magazine made this list.
That wouldn't surprise me. :D
AC/DC are not the first glam rock band (really old genre), and not the first hair metal band (probably Van Halen).

The Eagles should be in the damn top 4 I'd move the beatles to the 3rd spot ...mine would go something close to this off the top of my head (flame away):
1. Led Zeppelin
2. Rolling Stones
3. The Beatles
4. The Eagles
5. Pink Floyd
6. Rush
7. Aerosmith
8. The Who
9. Queen
10. Boston
That list kicks Major AS* best yet IMO!
There's a severe lack of prog on this list.....
and why the hell is KISS on this list?
why is nirvana so high, WAIT, nirvana? rofl? why are they even in the top 50? an awsome drummer and a lead singer who cant hang with the pressures of life doesnt make you a good band. the only good thing nirvana did was put money in grohl's pocket so he could repay the world by doing the same to greats like joshua holme

If this was Rolling stone it really hurts their credibility
What credibility? I was not aware that Rolling Stone ever had any credibility.

No One ever said AC/DC were the first Glam Rock Band. The first Glam Rock band was T. Rex. I guess I agree that Van Halen were the 1st Hair Band.

Like them or hate them KISS was one of the early innovators and pioneers of theatric rock. I grew up on KISS so any top 50 or hell top 25 list from me would have them on there

Well -- what's the definition of a real band? They wrote the songs, played all the instruments and sang all the vocal parts. That seems pretty real to me. It may have been a parody, but that doesn't mean it couldn't be good music. In fact one of the things that makes the movie so great is that the songs are actually good.

Umm yeah AC/DC is NOT hair metal.
