View Full Version : LOUD fret buttons - Anyone?

Friends, did a search found a lot of complaining, but no solutions.
The loud clicky fret buttons have become more annoying with time. It started to really bug me the other night when the wife was trying to sleep in the bedroom down the hall from the living room. I was playing at a decent night time volume, and she could still hear the loud clicky sounds of the fret buttons, and so could I, and it was really annoying. And in fact, it was screwing up my playing too, cause the clicks aren't in time with the pressing, they're more in time with the release of the button... Now I can't really ignore it anymore! And it's the only thing that's really hindering my playing as of late... The clicking just really screws up my timing now.
I'm actually surprised no one has complained more about this lately. It was a big issue at first once the replacement guitars were coming in, but now: silence. I figured the clicks would lessen with time, and normal use, but it's just as loud and annoying as when I received the replacement a while back...
Anyway, is there a decent fix for this? maybe there's a way to open up the guitar and remove/modify something to eliminate the clicks all together? In my research, some were actually swapping guitar necks with the old launch strats, but that's not really possible now...
Anyone? Thanks!

Why I still use my GH controllers... though, in that case the strumming is loud, so pick the lesser of two evils, lol.

Well, unfortunately I have the PS3 version, which doesn't allow for different guitars. Though, at least a clicky strum bar would be in time with the notes on screen...
If the fret button clicks were in time with the press, it would be slightly less annoying.
I'm just hoping I can remove something from inside the fret board that will eliminate the clicks... Maybe when I get home I'll experiment.
For the good of the community!!!

My replacement was silent for a few weeks, but has gotten more clicky as time goes on. Not the strum, but the frets like you. No solution, but eager to hear one.

Awesome. Glad I'm not alone on this! I just think it's about time we do something about it... I've put up with it for too long, and it's not really getting any better. As soon as I get home I'm making this my priority... Unless anyone else has tried that...

Not sure if its a 'solution' but I found that after a while I had to take the guitar apart and clean out the 'plastic dust' in the fret button slots and off the rubber 'gasket' type thing. I too found the fret buttons got louder and louder after use and actually had one of the buttons 'sticking' occassionally so I took it apart and found that cleaning them out took care of both problems. Of course I'm now at the point I take it apart weekly to 'clean' it because once it starts to make noise I want it to shut up again. :)

So cleaning the buttons made the loud clicking stop? I doubt my buttons are that dirty, but I guess I'll check that out when I get home... What is it in there that makes it click anyway? Is it a piece of metal or something?

Mine was loud from the get-go after I got the replacement... not as loud as my PS2 GH3 axe, but still...

I'm too focused in the music and note charts to really hear the clacking of the fret buttons on my guitar >.>

I think it's the buildup of plastic dust in the holes. As you keep pressing those fret buttons in, it 'grinds' against the hole and wears a bit of plastic off each time. It will eventually stop doing that because the button can only move so far side to side, but until that point, it'll keep building that dust up in there. I think the washing of the buttons/holes/rubber gasket thing also keep it a bit quieter. As I said, it might not work for you, but it does for me.

I have to agree 100% with the OP.
My PS3 fret buttons have gotten rediculously loud.

The loud clicky fret buttons are the main reason I'm still using a Les Paul instead of the strat. I'm in fact considering trading my strat to someone in exchange for an Xplorer because of this.

Exactly. I don't know how it works, but you'd figure by now they'd be "broken in", but they're just as loud, if not louder somehow...

(sorry...hit enter by mistake)
The new one I just got for a replacement is waaay too loud, I wish there was like a silencer you could put underneath! But you just gotta turn it up to really rock out.

My blue and orange frets were really clicky and hard to push down. I just sent it back a few days ago and hoping the replacement is quieter.

Wow didn't any of you guys see the sock mod for the guitar?
It works really well. You go to Walmart and buy a super long knee socks (preferably the one with 2/3 colored stripes at the top).
Take one of the socks and put it over the entire neck of the guitar you'll need at least one rubber bands at each fret to separate them and keep the sock on tight. Presto no more clicking sound.

I have never noticed at all.
Nothing.
Nada.
But when you are playing the game as you should be, at about 130db, you dont hear much of anything.
At all.
Nothing.
Nada.
Just sweet rock and roll.
I would think the drum clack would be far worse.
This isnt "easy listening band"
It is Rockband.
Crank it up dude, no sleeping allowed!
Buy her something nice, like some earplugs.
Honestly, it is hard to believe this is even an issue.

Well, my hearing is precious to me. I need it to hear things. Like sneaky rapists. Playing loud is fun, but I can't play extremely loud all the time. When I can't, the clicking sounds take over.

Yea, probably just one of the reasons I am single.
I just hate wasting my hearing on any other loud sound that is not music.
I may have been exaggerating, probably more like 100db most of the time.

We had to send our launch guitar back because the whammy bar wouldn't spring back, the one we got back has very loud clicking on the buttons.
I don't play guitar enough to be bothered by it, but I am bothered by all the whining my 14 year old daughter does because she is annoyed by the clicking when she plays it.
So yeah, I am indirectly VERY annoyed by it.

i dont really find any problem with it, they are loud but the strum bar is just heaven, im to busy rockin my face off to notice it, and if i do i just turn the game louder so i can hear the music and not my fingers

Its funny, since the strum bar is quiet, i tend to use the click on the fret buttons to keep tempo besides my foot. But ill look into the mod when im motivated to buy the stuff.

I have the exact same problem. The click of the button often messes me up as it's not in time with the strumming

It totally depends on the guitar model. The first two guitars we got (that later broke) had soft strum, but the one we are using now was really loud and annoying, even with the sound up.
We got some silicon spray from Radio Shack and that helped alot and did not involve taking the guitar apart. Get a can of compressed air, spray it between the frets to get it good and clean. Spray the silicon between the frets and press the buttons to get it all over. Let it dry for an hour or so. The noise does not totally go away, but it is quieter.

This mod seems like a solution... Though I don't really like the "adjusting the screws" part... How can you gauge what type of adjustment needs to be made? Dunno... Anyone else try this one?

if the click is on release then the problem would surely be the fret clips clicking against the board or the wire that holds the frets in place. Either way, that's what you'd want to dampen

I tried this mod last night. And the adjustment of the screws was just crazy.
With how the wires are located, the rubber band caused the orange fret to constant-on. Even if you get the 4 screws situated to where they all work, you practically have to start over once you put the other 2 screws back in.
I have to give this mod a big thumbs down.

**** pants... Figures... I didn't get a chance to sit with the guitar and open it up last night, so I'll attempt to find time tonight. Good thing I didn't go out and buy all the crap you need for the "rubber bad" mod.... There has to be more mods for this!

if it's the release noise that's bothering you I'd suggest finding a way to dampen the bits that make contact when you release
specifically these will be the clip that holds the fret button on and possibly the metal hook that stops the button flopping about

I solved my clicky fret issue doing this. This is my first instructional video so bear with its "amateurishness". I do think it will solve some people's problems though. :)
