View Full Version : difference between the two mics?

I popped into best buy to pick up some MS points (and earn reward points from bestbuy at the same time) and I walked by a rock band mic. Now I've seen the 30 dollar one that comes with the game bundle but this happened to be a 50 dollar mic. It had the Rock Band logo's slapped everywhere so I'm assuming its released by EA. The only thing I noticed visually between the two was that this 50 dollar version looked massive. The microphone part actually reminded me a bit of those "globes of death" that you see at the circus with motorcycles in them.
Anyone have both and know the difference between them? Or for that matter does anyone even know what I'm talking about?
(note sorry if this has been up alot already I only just noticed its existance)

I think i read on here somewhere that the new mic doesn't pick up the percussion hit's (when you tap the mic etc.) as well.

haha thats rough, 20 extra bucks for a mic that reacts worse!

I have both...
The new mic seems to respond to more subtle variations in your voice. If you aren't a real musician/singer, you probably won't care.
As for the tamborine hits, yeah it might seem less sensitive because the original mic is flat on top and you can't slap the metal straight on... but you wouldn't do that to a real mic anyways.
To compensate on the "real" mic, cup your hand so the globe part is somewhat beneath your "Cup", and slap on your thigh. You avoid striking the metal and it works fine.
My opinion is that if you beat the holy heck outta the mic for the tamborine, you end up damaging it's sensitivity. Real mics are made for constant physical trauma.... I doubt these are different.
just my humble opinion.

.
would you say the new mic was worth the 50 bucks? I would like to think Im decent at singing (although I think im only ranked around alittle better than 650 career) Would you say that, the expensive mic would make much of a difference?

I kept reading, everywhere, that the cord pulls loose out of the mic VERY easily. That is preventing me from getting it.

ouch, yeah i cant help but wonder why it would cost so much more without a dramatic quality difference. I mean i wouldnt think that it would only cost 20 bucks more becouse it was bigger than the other.
My one huge thing would be if it picked up lower pitch better, becouse some of the extremely low pitches eat me alive.

This is what I thought of it:
It filters background noise significantly, and distorts less at higher sensitivities. I was hoping this feature would let me beat talky parts easier (and it seemed to work a little better, but not significantly different). It also seems to pick stuff out of my low and high range better (this is useful to me, as I tend to drop songs into lower octaves to sing them). To me, it seemed very sensitive to percussion parts, but was more finicky than the regular mic about overdrive activation (major downer, as overdrive really nets you points in a big way).
I liked it all right, but didn't think it was worth the 50 bucks and returned it to Best Buy.

The Pelican Rock Band Mic right?
I'll let you know how it is when I get mine. I just bought one new off Ebay for .99 cents plus shipping $10.
No body bid on it. I just figured that there's not that many singers out there.

nah i dont think this is pelican. like logitech i think those are third party. The rock band mic in question is 50 bucks and is put out by Rock Band itself, being a first party peripheral.

What about using a real mic and an XLR to USB cable??
Has anyone tried this or am I taking my self and the game way too seriously???
I have a couple of shure's that are about 12 years old, but practicly brand new. They have to be far better quality than the mic that came with the bundle.
Lightsnake makes an XLR to USB cable for about $40.

I wouldn't pay $50 for any mic unless it's wireless.

I recently bought the "premium" mic and have seen a slight increase in my score, as well as less distortion in the output to the TV. I would however agree, that the tambourine hits are tougher to nail.
If you're like me and terrible with money go for it, otherwise it's not really worth the extra cash.

I bought the lightsnake cable to hook up a real mic. I am using cheap Nady mics (Usually about $20, there are far better mics out there) and I prefer the performance. Pitch changes seem so much smoother and I find I am able to hone in and fill the meter quicker (For reference I'm not a very good singer). For percussive notes you have to cup your hand or they don't register very well.
The one thing that could be a drawback is my voice doesn't seem to come through the speakers with it, no matter what I do with the Mic settings. I wonder what it would be like with a better mic, but I don't want to blow $100 more to find out as I'm pretty happy with it now.
I guess the cord only being 10 ft could be a draw back too.

Just thought I'd mention - the premium mic will not work on the PS2.

I have a lightsnake usb and it works well (xbox). I have a samson q7 plugged into it, and while my scores aren't really any better, the mic sounds a lot better.

I'd like to point out to everyone having trouble with percussion hits - Pressing "A" on the 360 controller does it just as well without the risk of damaging the mic over time. I'm sure there's a button with similar functionality for the PS3.

X button on the PS3.
I haven't had a problem with the percussive hits, though - a very light tap on the top of the mic has been adequate. I still use the controller, because I don't like the idea of whacking the mic anyway.
Performance seems to be just slightly better for me, but probably not enough to justify $50.
