I am probably just getting the 360 mainly for rock band, does anybody think its worth going for the elite? or just stick to the premium? Will 20 Gb be enough for all of the DLC i want to get? Thanks.

If you have the money, get elite. The extra space is well worth it. If you want to load the system with DLC, like me, and elite would be best. You'd fill up the 20GB in no time.

It really depends on what you have at home and what you are gonna be using it for.

Elite- supports up to 1080p
Premium-supports up to 1080i

elite-120GB HD
premium-20GB HD

elite-black
premium-white

That's really the only main differences.

So unless you have a 1080P television, and you plan on downloading over 3000 songs for Rock Band, then you need to get the premium.

Ultimately it's your money

Yeah, I picked up a Premium and I'm somewhat regretting it, although I honestly didn't have the extra $100 to drop on it at the time.

Still, I imagine I'll manage with a 20GB drive, or I'll just pay for the 120GB out of pocket down the road. I imagine it'll drop in price eventually. If not, well, there might be a lot of redownloading done in my future. :p

Why are you regretting it? Is it the memory and if so what is taking up all of the memory? If the memory is really mostly for Rockband do you still think its worth going for the elite, i sorta dont want to drop $100 for something that i dont have to, but if i need to i will.

I'm regretting it because I have a history of being download happy (not just for Rock Band), and since the thing doesn't actually have 20 GB of usable space, I have a feeling I'll burn through it pretty quick.

As for the price difference between the Premium and Elite, I think it's USD$50, so in that case it's worth it, but it's CAD$100 since they're still compensating for the exchange rate from last year or something, so I couldn't justify buying it (although the HDD standalone is CAD$199).

If you're in the US, I'd say it's worth it just so you never really have to worry about it. I know if it had been a CAD$50 difference, I would have certainly done it.

Edit: Okay, my mistake, it is also a $100 difference. Yeah, I guess it comes down to how much downloading you'll actually do. :p

(edit)Best Buy lists the Elite at 449.99 which is 50 more than Walmarts Premium at 399.99

I just read this in the EGM 219 issue

The Xbox 360 has a whole lot of positives, sure, but it also has one notorious negative: The system randomly craps out for no reason. I might know why: My Microsoft mole tells me that all the best 360 parts i.e., the ones that pass rigorous stress tests) are currently going to the $479 Elite model. I guess it's a small- er, large- price to pay to get a system that works.

Elite- supports up to 1080p
Premium-supports up to 1080i

The premium outputs 1080p. The only restriction is that HD-DVD can only be output at a maximum of 1080i over component. This restiction is not present with a VGA connection.

I think all the newly manufactured Premiums also include a HDMI port. So it's really down to HDD space and colour.

I bought a premium and im happy with it... i know one of my friends got one that crashed right out.. it was unrepairable and they had to send him a new one, but mine works fine for 399 :)

Actually, the set prices for the three versions of the 360 are $280 (Core), $350 (Premium), and $450 (Elite). So there's a $100 difference between Premium and Elite.

It's definitely worth it to buy an Elite, pretty much, for the sole reason to fill up the HD with DLC. That's the main reason why I'm getting an Elite, but a big problem for me is money, 'cause I am buying RB on release, but I need a 360 to play it, and I also am getting GH3 for the Wii, which I already have, and, on top of all of this, I need to get $300 by October for my first payment of my senior trip.
When I get my 360, I'm getting it at Sam's Club because they sell the Elite with a bundle with an extra controller and a charge and play wire for just $499. To me, that's a good deal that a lot that don't have a 360 should take adavntage of.

I purchased an elite for Rock Band. Well, there are a few other games I like, but that was my main reason.

I'm spending so much money for Rock Band and a 360, an Elite just seemed like too much. I doubt I will ever fill up the 20 GB HD anyways, so I didn't think it would be worth it at all to spring the extra $100 for the Elite.

Well the elite isn't really the better deal too now that the premium comes with a free game, although it's not such a great one, is even farther away in cost difference from the elite from the new price drops, and also now use the same motherboard the elite uses. Oh yeah, and I know at least in my town you get an extra free wireless controller with the purchase of an Xbox 360 (shows the pro, but I'd think it's good for all of them) at Circuit City right now. Just saw it in the ads.

Yup I actually just ordered that, its only good until Labor Day. But yea, it was worth it basically getting an extra free wireless controller.

I don't believe there is any reason to pay extra for an Elite for Rock Band. You can buy hundreds of DLC songs, and you are not going to fill up a 20G drive. Also, the newer premium units are being sold with an HDMI output.

Nah, it's not worth it. 'Cept for the space. That's it. You aren't guaranteed that it won't give you the three red lights of death either...

The elite has the same parts as the premium, besides allowing 1080p and the hard drive.

100 bucks for not that big of a difference in graphics and a bigger hard drive just isn't worth it to me. If you can find a good deal, then by all means, go ahead.

But, Rock Band DLC will probably not take up 20GB, I doubt even 1GB.

Thats reassuring....:(

And also the reason why I'll be picking up the PS3.:D

But 50 bucks doesn't make or break you. Pick up the Elite, I'd say $50 for an extra 100g is a small price for a great amount of space.

Premium if I'm not mistaken is 399. Elite is 449. Not 100 dollar difference.

Let's see, after a year+ of owning a premium console and crazy-ass amounts of downloads, I've used a whopping 3 gigs.

The premium and elite use basically the same motherboard now that the premium has been revised to include HDMI. The whole argument of Elite versus Premium can be boiled down to 3 specific points:

Do I *really* need that extra hard disk space? Something very situational which I have yet to see anyone use effectively.

Do I want a black console versus a white one?

Do I want to spend 70-80 dollars more for the above two features?

I have an Elite AND a Premium. Go with the Elite if you are download happy (or if you love digital video distribution). Yes, I have more than 20 GB worth of stuff on my Elite.

Well, of course all 20GB isn't useable: there is partition information taking some room, and all HDDs are partitioned into sectors. So all files get rounded up to the next size in sectors. There's also the difference between a 20GB HD (the HDD has 20x10^9 Bytes) and 20GiB of files (the files are 20x2^30, or 21.5x10^9, Bytes). So 20GB = 18.6GiB.

Yeah, nomenclature sucks, but it's important to understand.

Exactly, not much different between them anymore.

You are mistaken (sorry). Premium got a $50 price drop to $350. Elite also used to be $480. $100 is a lot for pigment and 100GB

I'm in the same boat, looking to get a 360 just for Rock Band (and Halo 3 and Gears of War and Dead Rising...) and I'm leaning towards the Elite. The reason being that it has the best deal, you can get an Elite and two free games from HMV (link is here (http://www.hmv.co.uk/hmvweb/displayProductDetails.do?ctx=-1;6;53;-1&sku=638896&DCSext.page=Xbox+360-PBODY-HC_XBOX360_REC-638896) for people in the UK looking to get one). But I'm going to wait a few months and fingers crossed there will be better deals coming up closer to Christmas. Until then my wii will have to do.

Odd. I bought off Amazon, and got great deals on peripherals ($12 off on the wireless controller!) and games.

Perhaps their pricing hasn't been changed. I don't follow 360 that close, since I decided to go with PS3.

Yeah, it's only MSRP, so they can still charge more to try and find a few suckers...

If you're considering an Elite for RB it's just as well to get the PS3 cause:

1. It doesn't break.
2. Since you're download happy you can use your own HD on PS3,up to 300 GB I believe.
3. Not paying any extra for online play.
4. Since it's for Rock Band you won't be needing an extra hub or whatever it is that the 360 needs cause it only has 3 ports.

I hear the white premiums recently got HDMI, so no the Elite is pretty much pointless now.

20 gigs is more than enough for demos, save games, arcade games and the occasional hd movie rental.

There is absolutely no need for the extra 100 GB of memory UNLESS you're planning on downloading movies and TV shows. Just playing games on your 360 doesn't take up all that much memory. I have 11 free GB that isn't even being used and I download a lot of useless crap to my hard drive.

The Elite does have an HDMI port in the back, but later this month, all 360's will too. So I recommend you wait on it.

Compared to a premium Xbox 360:
Elite: Black
Premium: White

Elite: 120GB
Premium: 20GB

Elite: HDMI-compatible
Premium: No HDMI, but there will be this month.

So basically it just depends on if you want a black or white console and if you're planning on downloading an INSANE amount of junk to your hard drive. HDMI isn't really a problem, all 360's will have them very, very soon.
