Rock band is a game. It is designed to be fun, accessible, affordable and plausible (in terms of system hardware, software and development time and effort).
Having "real" instruments for controllers or making the game a "learning program" for "serious musicians" does not really apply here. If you want to learn guitar, drums, bass or singing so bad, go do it in real life........its a lot cheaper than making a "musical-simulator". This is primarily a GAME and its primary objective is to be FUN. Sure, it is trying to inspire more people to start their own bands and write their own music, but its not trying to help you learn anything. Its for people who never had any intention of playing instruments as a hobby or a career and who just want to have fun imagining they are the real thing.
Its fair enough to discuss how a "realistic" controller might work and how you could get round the numerous difficultues and costs involved. just dont get any ideas about this game being anything more than a game......otherwise you will be VERY disappointed.
Oh and to that person that said that it would be more like Gran Turismo. No, it already is on the level of Gran Turismo. It is taking you into a fantasy where you are the guitarist/whatever of a rock band, just like GT allows you to believe you are driving a real car on a race track. Gran Turismo itself is not the "perfect" simulator, it still does not give the full feel of driving a car on a race track at 150mph+. You can get close, but eventually it becomes pointless because the costs of making the game so realistic go far beyond actually buying a car and paying to do a lap round a track. Hell, you can be paid to do it if your good and get employed by a team. It basically sums up to: Whats the point? Do I really need to learn how to drive on a game, when I can more easily just do it in real life?
My last point is, why the hell would you want to learn guitar/bass/drums/vocals on such a complicated set up? When you can so easily just go buy a guitar and some lessons and start learning in real life for a lot cheaper and probably a lot more reliably. Ive been learning guitar for a year and have to say its not hard.....it takes time and effort and practice, but its not so hard it requires you to play a simulator to learn.......seriously what is the point in having a guitar-simulator or a drum simulator?
Stick with having fun and stop expecting so much out of what is simply JUST A GAME. Reality is not always fun, and that is what these games are designed to do, take us away from it, not bring us back.
Oh, yeah:
How are they going to make any money from the game if they are going to market to "only real musicians". LOL. The money comes from people who cant be bothered learning real guitar.....gamers.
