View Full Version : Artist/Genre compilation list

Ardius
06-04-2007, 05:59 AM
Ok, my idea is to try and think of some decent artists from each genre of music that uses at least a bass, guitar, drums and, of course, singing. However, some could be used for separate career paths. E.g. Some Blues could easily be used for a Guitar only career song. Perhaps people can refer to this list when compiling their own setlists.....in the interests of creating balanced lists of multiple genres, rather than one or two.

Any genres that I have missed that would be good for a particular area (whether it be a band music or a instrument-specific music). I have left out ones that are a little too specific for the moment, e.g. Rap and HipHop….mostly because they would just be singing and Im not sure whether we want them in the game or
not………if there is demand, I will include it.

SUGGESTIONS WANTED
NOTE: The artists are listed in what they were most successful in, as some artist can be included in more than one category because they wrote some songs of different genres, e.g. Queen did many varied songs......so to avoid confusion, only suggest an artist for one genre....unless they are a fusion, in which case name the fusion and I will consider whether they are different enough to be seperated into their own genre. There are many, many sub-genres of music, most of which many people struggle to define properly....so most artists can considered many different things because of their sound. Please, let us just stick with the main genres and no silly-specific ones like "Californian Thrash" or "Viking Metal".....as these only include a small proportion of bands...we dont need to be too specific.
VERY SPECIAL NOTE: NO ARGUMENTS CONCERNING BANDS THAT ARE VERY HARD TO PUT IN ONE GENRE, E.G. TRIVIUM, KILLSWITCH ENGAGE, ETC. FOR THE SAKE OF MAKING THIS THREAD SIMPLE, LEAVE THE GENRE ARGUMENT OUT OF THIS. ALSO, NO INSULTING OTHER GENRES WHICH YOU DISLIKE, NO-ONE CARES AND EVERYONE IS ENTITLED TO THEIR OWN TASTES OF MUSIC. PLEASE, NO ARGUING OR RANDOM-SPAM-INSULT-POSTS
The only argument is if the artist is in a genre that it definitely should not be in, e.g. Metallica being in Folk rock or something. Otherwise, if there is even a chance an artist can be considered in a genre, there should be no argument. This thread is not about that.

For Blues add in Stevie Ray Vaughn, Muddy Waters

For Ska add in: Reel Big Fish, Streetlight Manifesto, Desmond Dekker, Sublime, Early Rancid.

For Rockabilly add: Elvis, The Stray Cats, The Reverend Horton Heat (he is technically a fusion genre called Psychobilly which is Rockabilly and Punk).

Ive already got Stevie Ray Vaughan, but in Blues Rock.....

I think its best just to list the artists once in their "best known" genre. For example, Black Sabbath wrote some songs that inspired Death metal, but they arent necessarily a death metal band.....hmm, think i need to include this in my OP.
Ill only add fusion genres if people can suggest enough artists for them.

Added those that u suggested though, so thanks.

What about Melodic Metal In general?

In Flames, At The Gates, Norther, Kalmah, and Dark Tranquillity, Wintersun, and this will probably stir up a genre argument, but Children of Bodom to a lesser extent as well (And yes I know Alexi Laiho wants to call themselves just metal)

Also, doesn't Breaking Benjamin belong in alternative? All I've got

Ok, making the additions.
Breaking Benjamin....yeah, sorry. Ill change that too. Its hard to make sure each artist is in the right genre when you're trying to think of so many different artists in varying genres......

You mean Melodic Death Metal? yeah, Ill add it, since there are quite a few artists in that one. Children of Bodom does count.....but only really for the album Follow the Reaper.....so Im going to put them in Power Metal, because metal archives is always right ;)

Jgbaker

Well I did want to say Melodic Death Metal, but I was afraid of someone getting on me about Wintersun being Melodic Black Metal. But anyways, thanks for updating.

Oh, a few other artists for the list:
Cannibal Corpse - Death Metal
Wolfmother - I have noooo idea where to put these guys, you tell me if you've listened, hard rock?
All That Remains - Metalcore
GWAR (as of their last three albums) - Thrash Metal
Lamb of God - Metalcore? I got nothin'
Disturbed - Nu Metal
The Black Dahlia Murder - Metalcore or Death metal, take a listen and decide for yourself

Are we putting any Industrial in? If so throw Rammstein and Eisbrecher up there. Or maybe some english speaking Industrial bands, I'm not sure how many of you know a little Deutsch

Ardius
06-06-2007, 09:58 AM
Im not going to put up Industrial purely because its the most rediculous genre ever. No-one knows how to define industrial, it can mean anything.
Its heavily debated, but:
Lamb of God: Metalcore
The Black Dahlia Murder: Metalcore

Its easier just to leave the debated ones in one of the other, Im more inclined to leave them in metalcore because they are part of the so called New Wave of American Metal......and they seem to have a couple of punk stylings in their music.

No doubt some Lamb of God fans will totally murder me for saying that, but Ive got to put them somewhere! They arent completely metal nor are they completely metalcore!

Anyways, added your suggestions.

Think you should set apart a separate grunge genre section? Including Nirvana Mudhoney, Stone Temple Pilots, Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains

Also let's see these:
Staind: Alternative
Mudvayne: Nu Metal

And I think R.E.M. belongs more in alternative than Indie, and if anything else college rock, but that's a relatively small genre, so I'm going with alternative

This list definitely needs some better indie rock. My suggestions: The Blood Brothers, Boredoms, Death From Above 1979, Dinosaur Jr., Interpol, Lightning Bolt, Modest Mouse, Neutral Milk Hotel, The New Pornographers, Pavement, the Shins, Sonic Youth, the Strokes, Ted Leo, the Thermals, TV on the Radio, Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Boredoms & Lightning Bolt would better go under Noise Rock if you wanted to add that genre; if you did I could name a few other good bands to go in it. Sonic Youth could fit under a million different genres. Blood Brothers could also easily go in Hardcore/Post-Hardcore.

Hmmm, Im going to have to research these, some Ive never heard of. I dont want to put too many lesser known artist in just yet. However, I will have a look first.

UPDATE: Ok, Im going to include them. Ill add Noise rock as a genre because some of those cant be put in anything else. A couple can go in alternative because they span several genres rather than one.
Thanks for the help in that area, I only really know of the bands from the capital of Indie music, :D

add john mayer to the blues rock category. (listen to the TRY! album and you'll understand) the album was recorded as a Trio, john on vocals and guitar, pino palidino on base, and steve jordan on drums...and they're all awesome. heavily SRV/buddy guy/clapton influenced

Care to suggest some? I have unfortunately not heard any big asian bands. Any South American bands or any other would definitely be good too. The only problem is if the bands sing lyrics which arent english.....
On the other hand, maybe it would make it more interesting and harder for the singing. Might teach some people better language skills too, lol.

^That is highly insulting to rap rock. Neither of those two can be considered rap rock in anyway what so ever.
Rap Rock:
Rage Against The Machine, Kid Rock, etc.
However, Rap-rock or Rapcore is an extremely small genre and consists of artists which can be easily be put into other categories. Until someone suggests artistst which are only rap-rock, then I will not add a seperate section.

Please, do not start the damned genre argument. As far as Im concerned both Hendrix and the Who are hard rock. Dont like it? Then go complain on a forum for genre discussions.
The only argument is if the artist is in a genre that it definitely should not be in, e.g. Metallica being in Folk rock or something. Otherwise, if there is even a chance an artist can be considered in a genre, there should be no argument. This thread is not about that.

Until you convince me that Hip Hop and Rap is worthwhile to be put in the game, I will leave them for now. Seeing as the game is called Rock Band, I dont see why it needs to be in the game. Rap-rock and others, yes, they can be included. But basic rap and hip-hop doesnt generally use real instruments, they usually use eletronically made beats and they base the songs off the singing, not the instrumental skills, so it would be REALLY boring for the other instruments.
I am still considering Electronica, seeing as Freezepop worked well in GH1 and 2, I dont see why not. It would make a nice change too. Im still unsure though.

Anyone like New Wave? In New wave I mean New wave not new wave of heavy metal or anything. Some of it is mostly synth, but their are guitary songs, and some synthy songs have bass, drums and singing.

New Wave
Oingo Boingo
Elvis Costello
Duran Duran
Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark
The Police (Listed as pop rock but could be considered New Wave)
XTC
New Order
Talking Heads
The Boomtown Rats
Big Country

Hard Rock
Deep Purple
Living Colour
Cheap Trick

Progressive Rock
Kansas
Procol Harum
Moody Blues

Shock Rock/Glam Rock
Twisted Sister

Early Rock
Chuck Berry
Bobby Fuller

Folk Rock
Donovan
Simon and Garfunkel
The Byrds

Pop Rock
Electric Light Orchestra (Couldn't think of anything else there for them)
John Lennon
Paul McCartney
Toto
The Kinks (Couldn't think of anything else there for them either)
Huey Lewis & The News

Blues Rock
Foghat
The Animals

Some of the ones that didn't have categories, I fit in to others. I checked wikipedia for a few of them, but still dispute them if they are wrong.

Lol The Blood Brothers are not hardcore punk they are post-hardcore. If you do make a post-hardcore section, add Thrice, Thursday, and Bear Vs. Shark, The Fall Of Troy, and Saosin. Also adds some melodic hardcore: Lifetime, CIV, Set Your Goals, Saves The Day, Gorilla Biscuits, Daggermouth, No Trigger, and H2O. Also add The Receiving End Of Sirens, The Dear Hunter, and Rx Bandits to progressive rock with The Mars Volta. Add Say Anything, Brand New, and The Early November, The Snake The Cross The Crown, and Cap'n Jazz to Indie.

Guy that made this is inactive. Should I remake it, and copy the current list?

Add Genesis and Kansas to Progressive Rock.

Add The Beach Boys, Boston, and Journey to Pop Rock.

Add Simon & Garfunkel to Folk Rock.

And maybe move GnR from Pop Rock to Hard Rock.
