More and more, especially with the huge amount of DLC that are Master Tracks coming out these days, I find myself going into Practice mode on guitar...
...and not playing a note.
I was inspired by this webcomic (http://threepanelsoul.com/view.php?date=2008-03-10) that I came across a few weeks ago, and thinking... "huh... how WOULD TPD sound without drums?" Well, after trying that, I thought about trying it without bass and without guitar. Out of all of them, I'd have to say minus guitar sounds the best. It's like listening to a completely different version, almost a dub version, of a song you know and love. Works really well on the Police tracks, IMO.
Does anyone else do this, and if so, what tracks do you like in this style?

I was all set to just auto-respond no based only on your threads title, but after reading it, I'm gonna have to go with a solid maybe...

Spoken like a true 'freelance bassist' haha... I don't know much about real instruments but it sounds like this would be a great way to create 'backing tracks', wouldn't it? It seems like all you would need to do is just export the audio output from the practice mode and play your real drums or guitar to it.

That's actually a fantastic idea. Not that I play any real instruments (yet), but it's still a great idea.

Semi-related....
After playing through GH1 and GH2 I would get tired of playing the same stuff over and over (cause back then we had to wait a full year for new songs you youngin's! :p) and I would start a new career where I would play with only the guitar sound on. It made it a completely different game. Pretty awesome. I should give it a run on Rock Band with drums sometime. :D

Someone should do this and post them somewhere. Granted, you could just do this on practice all the time, but it would be so much better to have access to it wherever you have a computer/cd player/etc.
I know I'd love it, as I already play guitar and am currently learning to play drums.
Playing along to these songs with everything but what you're playing is an amazing idea.

I've done this a number of times (using vocal practice) to just listen to an instrumental version of a song that I'm not familiar with and am having trouble with because of it.
Similarly, I've done it in sections (using guitar practice) to mainly listen to how the singer sounds in places where he/she is "winging it".

can't say that I do do it. Although sounds like a good way to learn the lyrics!

Hmmm... I've never thought of doing that. Guess I'll try it when I get home!

Just bumping this thread because I captured a few vids of this method in action, and put them up on my Youtube page. Maybe some of you will be interested.
The playlist for all the vids is here:
Rock Band: In Dub (tracks without guitar) (http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=DFB88165CC206A22)
Here's a few to get you started, and see how different they sound without guitar:
