View Full Version : How's the RB UI going to handle song purchases?

Anyone familiar with the 360 marketplace blade knows that it offers a pretty limited amount of real estate. Even with the meager download offerings of GH2, the Marketplace interface for it is pretty cramped.

With Rock Band proposing to have weekly downloads, it would seem to me that the 360 dashboard interface would be pretty quickly overwhelmed. It makes me wonder how they will handle the whole purchasing of songs.

Will there be a custom interface? Will you be able to get a preview before purchase? How will downloads work in online multiplayer when all parties may not own the song?

There will be plenty of room on the Live Marketplace, just like PSN.
Just like every other newly released content, you just go to Games>New Releases>Rock Band.
For the PSN it will just be sitting on the main Featured page.

I didn't intend for my speculation to lead to *another* console war thread. Regardless of the fanboy persuasion and console loyalty, Rock Band is going to require a pretty expansive interface to handle the potentially "hundreds" of song downloads.

Contained within the whole download concept are all sorts of interesting subtlties like "how will it handle singles purchases versus albums" "can I purchase a single track off an album, or must it be the whole thing" "can I take my song purchases and play them on my friend's console"

I think it's pretty reasonable to wonder a little bit on the specifics of how all that will work considering how central a feature it is.

yeah i was wondering too about how it will work online, because if there's going to be so many songs, it's going to potentially prove very difficult to find people online if you want to play a specific album/song, particularly with the localised content. I hope this doesn't result in the same as with defunct live games where you can never find a game!

It would be equally cluttered for the psn.

I hope they have a custom marketplace within the game......that would be sweet

For Psn i can expect the same as with Ridge Racer track add-ons.

Add-On Menu -> Albums -> Songs
Like That Simple Yet Effective

I'm expecting a in-game songstore, like the SingStore in Singstar.

with the risk of straying too far off topic: I would LOVE to see vids of my band playing on the TVs in my home, and maybe even in de public areas :D

ive never seen how xbox live works or any 360 game with add-on features. do the games have an in-game menu to purchase add-ons? or does everything need to be done through xbox live?

it would be simple for games to have add-on options within the game as seen on ps titles, but if ms doesn't allow that and forces you to use live, that could screw things up a bit. would there be like a limited time frame to purchase things?

It's a good question. The current interface for XBox Live Marketplace is not well-suited to browsing hundreds of song/album configurations, yet Microsoft tends to be real big on the unified interface to XBox Live. I doubt they would let Harmonix re-skin it.
