View Full Version : M-Rated DLC possible?

I was just wondering what the status of the DLC will be and how it effects the game itself. For instance. GH2 was rated T, and all the following DLC was also rated T. So with the DLC being individually rated is it possible to get some packs Rated T and others with M ratings? Not necessarily an unedited version of the same songs just a group of songs that are bundled together due to their explicit content. Really I was just thinking.....

Either A - They are not allowed to add DLC that exceeds the initial rating of the game.

Or... B - They can get the initial rating of T and add "explicit" M-rated songs through DLC that would have otherwise caused the game to get an M rating for the retail release due to the lyrics. Since it is not a mandatory download I hope this would be the case.

Just a thought and one I have no clue where to find an answer to, unless Sean can comment. But this is probably a decision above his head I imagine.

it's possible but there can be problems. Both PS3 and 360 have parental controls. So someone can lock out M rated games on a console(with 360 you can limit it to a profile). There might be a policy complication with releasing DLC with different ratings.

What about the "Game experience may change during online play." thing?

I think they can release that stuff. They can release R rated movies on Xbox LIVE, so why cant I sing "Hey" by the Pixies?

Yeah, That coupled with the individual ratings on every piece of DLC. Also, I am not really talking about a song with a few bad words. I don't mind them bleeping those out. I am more talking about the songs that would have to be changed heavily to be included in the game.

I hope so. ******* by Dennis Leary would be awesome! (or can I say that song name here? I don't know! but I'm sure you'll figure it out anyway)

That only applies to the possibility that other people online may call you any number of unsavory and vulgar things. If it's produced by the game company, they are responsible for the content. Remember: Hot Coffee taught us that even unofficial content can be factored into a games rating.

Does anyone have an example of a game being rated higher on an expansion pack? That would probably be the closest comparison.

Listen to Creep by Radiohead. Its in Rock Band. With all swearing songs, they'll either use the radio edit (smart way) or remove the word (dumb way). The dumb way was used for Creep "you're so ... special" rather than radio edit: "you're so very special" and proper version "you're so f*cking special".

I actually like it the "dumb" way, this way you can sing the lyric however you want.

This was my point...kinda... They almost have to do this in order to obtain a T rating for the disc/retail version. But with the ability to get individual ratings on the DLC they can have 95% T rated and a few M rated packs. Just was wondering if this was even a possibility really...

Like Casey Jone's by the Dead, He says "Drivin' that train high on Cocaine" Now if that flies I would be surprised... Just wondering if they can use the master and just get an M rating on certain songs.

Edit-I agree with paska on the edit style too..Best for us to fill it in if anything

Well, I think it will all be T (or for E.U. 12+ or for UK PG) rating for all, but hey they may change it.

Oh and I suppose you're right with the Creep thing.. maybe. I dunno

Perfect example: In Rocks the 80's, they had Los Angeles by X. The first verse reads:

she, had to leave
los angeles
all her toys wore out in black and her boys had too
she started to hate every n****r and jew
every mexican that gave her lotta s***
every homosexual and the idle rich
idle rich

So what they did was double up the second verse. It pissed me off, considering the integrity and the point of the song was lost, however I can understand that they probably couldn't have done it the way it is. It brings up the point of whether or not video games as a medium for songs to come through has enough weight for something like this to make it through without controversy. Simply for the fact that DLC must be paid for, it's a choice made by the consumer to get the songs in question, but the dev to put them up for sale. Also, it should be an option to download any original songs that had to be edited for the disc in their original versions for a very small fee so that it's still a payable option and not a free necessity to protect HMX.
