I see under each user's personal profile a blue star with a "points" tag if you hover over it. What is the purpose of this? (For example, my profile lists me as having 44 points, is that good, bad, irrelevent?)

The points system shows user activity or inactivity, depending on points. Points are rewarded for blogging, posting, and submitting photos. I am sure it will come in handy soon.

I think it depends on how much time you spend logged in, because I have not summited any photos, no blogs, a small amount of threads, only 200 posts so far, and have 11 pts. So....

Is it related to friends? I have 14 points and 14 friends...

I can tell you for a fact it is based on your activity. Post a new thread, a blog, or pictures. It will give you more points.

I have made around 6 threads, ever since I joined.
I have 11 points.

It also rewards you for other things. Which I am not at liberty to say. You all need to be more active and find out for yourselves. I've got as many as hmxsean 162 or 163....

Maybe certain amounts of posts? Doubt it though as I don't have a very high post count.
Maybe sean sees helpful posts and adds points? Alot of your posts are helpful so that could be why you have so many. I've only added 1 photo, never blogged.
I have had a good share of helpful posts.. mostly in guitar related threads.

Remember when Sean said to start networking, and that it was imperative to do so.....

Its because I don't want an influx of idiocy taking over this board. You understand right? Not calling everyone idiots, but there are some out there they will abuse certain things.

Like this pointless points system. I'll probably get docked points because my post isn't useful enough - meh w.e., points mean jack****.

Yeah, I'd rather not see it advertised myself. If it turns out "friends invites" give points, my inbox will be flooded the next day with 1000 random noob invites for points farming. If it's "blog posts" we'll see the blogs maxed out with random gibberish for point farming. Once you start these types of bean-counting schemes, it's only natural for people to farm their way up the system (don't believe me? check out "star farming" on the IGN boards where users will devote hours a day to posting for arbitrary star icons)
My curiousity on the subject is now satisfied. "some unconfirmed user metric that may or may not serve a purpose down the line"

So, let's say I sent you a friend request, and you accepted... I wonder who'd get a point. I have a whopping 0 friends and I don't "blog" and the profile page is as close to MySpace as I do...

You don't get points for adding or requesting friends.

I don't think the points are for anything. It's just a feautre that comes with these threads and profile things. HMX didnt make it themselves did they? They just got a template from a place that does that kinda stuff then changed likes and dislikes to rock and not rock.

Oh dear God, this is going to turn into a battle of "Get as many points as you can by being completely redundant and noobish".
It'll be just like Gamerscore in Xbox Live...
