View Full Version : Free DLC hurting future Coulton Songs

Bladewielder19

I can't help but feel that this free download is going to hurt future Jonathan Coulton DLC. If you aren't familiar with his work I encourage you to youtube a few of his more popular songs. Code Monkeys, RE your brains, Skullcrusher Mountain, The Future Soon; all these and more would make excellent tracks.

If we give away his arguably most popular song for free on April fools day, it almost sets Jonathan up as a joke. Harmonix I would encourage you to take a look at his other work. It would play well to the nerd/geek crowd.

I completely agree, I would love to see more Jonathan Coulton but he isn't even mentioned as the artist for Still Alive in the game!

It is a joke song, though. Just an overplayed song from an overrated game.
I see it in the same group as The Llama Song by now, just an internet meme song.

I can't really see still alive being overplayed, and it's not a joke song, but I will give you that it's not an actual attempt at album material.

I really hope to see some other coulton stuff as well, Re: Your Brains is one of my favorite novelty songs, I like Mr. FancyPants, This one is not about you, man I just think that guy can write songs, and in less than a week...gg JC, gg.

Cause Rock Band isn't something that's going to fade away in 6 months. The novelty of a NOVELTY SONG will fade away. It is not meant to be eternal.

I don't find myself agreeing with CaptainFeral a lot but he is right on this one. People have been spouting this song over and over since Portal came out and it IS getting annoying. Yes, I played Portal before anyone says anything.

Hanover

If you played Portal, you'd understand just how clever that game really was. What you thought was just a simple puzzle game turned into an actual experience. It did something truly original with narrative and in how it involved the player and ended with a very funny love song that was sort of the grand finale and fit perfectly. The best surprise of 2007 in the gaming world.

I'd rather have that kinda thing popular than something like Deal or no Deal. :) At least it shows that we do appreciate something original, thought provoking, creative and intellectual.

I could say the same thing about Dani California...or having to play the C&C song for the 5,000 time in a row. Not really different than any of the other popular songs in Rock Band.

If anything, Still Alive shows that Harmonix is at least willing to take chances and provide all sorts of songs for us to play.

Im not playing the victim, just pointing out that you argue by putting down.

Its not worth arguing about music tastes. My point is Jonathan Coulton is as legtimate as anything else. Hell, I think you could consider Weezer kind of a novelty act. Rock n Roll was once considered a novelty. Bands like Wall of Voodoo, They Might Be Giants, Devo and The Dead Milkmen all landed places on the rock and pop charts.

The bottom line is, it's a free song. We don't have to download it. What is wrong with introducing people to a new artist? What if Still Alive leads people to other of Johnathan Coulton's work? You realize he sells enough albums to make a living from that alone...so someone must like him.

The only reason people are down playing 'Still Alive' is because its not what they wanted. If you don't like the song then don'download it, it is as simple as that. If you think Johnathon was hurt by this being free then your wrong. Why?, because all his music is free to download online yet he still makes more money yearly then he did at his previous job. The only people who would think of Johnathon as a joke because of this are them themselves everyone else will just enjoy the song and have fun instead of whining.

Half-Life.

But even if it's a new PC game (if you count HL2 Episode I Don't Give a Crap), it's still not witty.
You don't seem to really understand what the word means.
Is saying "I like lamp" witty?
Is it witty to say "Hasta la vista, baby?"

I get the joke. It's a lame reference to Valve's other game series.
I'm saying that it's not witty. It's just a reference.

Do you even know what the definition of witty is? FUNNY and the song is funny and creative. Witty is just a more mature way of saying funny. Black Mesa is not just a reference to an old PC game but to the entire Half-Life universe including Portal.

What I don't understand is why it bothers you so much and also why you even care enough about it to sit on a message board argueing and whining.

1. Possessing or demonstrating wit in speech or writing; very clever and humorous.
2. Characterized by or having the nature of wit; funny or jocular: a witty saying.
3. Quick to discern and express amusing insights or relationships.
4. Entertainingly and strikingly clever or original in concept, design, or performance: a witty sculpture; witty choreography.

I see nothing clever about referencing something from a game the song is about.
Quit the idiotic fanboy praise.
"OMG ITS WITTY! HOW CAN YOU NOT SEE IT WIT!"

And even if it's not witty, funny is something that varies from person to person.
I don't see anything funny about the song whatsoever. It's not that I don't get it, it's that I don't think it's funny.
You can't just claim it's funny and witty and that anyone who doesn't see that is wrong because they don't get the song.

litaljohn

Witty is just a more mature way of saying funny.
/From My Motorola Q9C

well witty is amusing and clever, funny maybe but many would think a funny reference is just that, a funny reference. the opinion the other person clearly stated showed an appreciation for the word in that he thought it was not clever but merely a reverence, making the term witty, unfit in this example.
witty is not just a mature way of saying funny, funny is only part of the term and it needs another dependent variable to be witty. please look up witty in the future.

Okay seriously... can we all just calm down a bit here... Everyone is going to have their own opinion of the song, this happens every week and with the inclusion of a song from another game you are going to add a bit of a, for lack of a better term, fanboy element into it. I played portal and yes I found it enjoyable. I like the song, and despite it not being the greatest show of the talents of Mr. Coulton, I downloaded it and tried playing it (got half way through and my 360 froze... shortly there after got the 3 rings but let it sit and its okay now). It may not be your favorite song, it may not be something you even like listening to, but thats why they made it downloadable content. You don't have to buy it if you don't want it. For those of us that do, they gave us the added bonus of it being free. Either way I'm just glad Made in Mexico (the people responsible for Yes We Can on GH2) doesn't have any songs in Rock Band and if they do make a DLC pack I have the option of not buying it.

an1m051ty
04-01-2008, 01:38 AM
Actually, the Power Rangers theme would be fairly challenging on all instruments, and sounds fun to play.

Plus the Power Rangers theme would probably be more well-known to the age group of people playing this game (ages 16-26?) You know, alot of us grew up with it.

Still Alive was amusing, just like Portal was a great game, but I think having it as DLC was kind of a lame choice. On guitar at least, its rather boring. Vocals is kind of entertaining. Drums forgettable. If they are going for novelty I'd suggest a Wierd Al or something a little less niched.

BTW, at first I thought the "cake is a lie" fad and such was entertaining, but now it is annoying.

Just my 2 cents.

Saying this song hurts future DLC is like saying a demo hurts a retail game.

Demos DO hurt the retail game if it (being the game) doesn't live up to the context of the the genre or, other content in this case. if i DL a game and it doesnt "live up" to other games then i am less likely to buy it.

So i'd say nothing for free, as it would in most cases, force people to purchase.

and in context of Coulture, i promise most Rock Band gamers as a majority wouldn't pay for anymore of his work as there is plenty more relevant bands out there that should come lightyears before him. The guy just isnt that good...

It even says Black Mesa in one of the conference rooms you can look into on the last level where you escape (I don't care about spoilers). Also, they aren't angry you are trying to leave cause you die anyway.

Aperture Science
We do what we must
because we can.

They kill you because they can. In game, you avoid the fire pit, though...

And the Science gets done.
And you make a neat gun.
For the people who are
still alive.

They use your body to test it's limits which allows them to make guns for their army.

End of song, Glados keeps saying that she is still alive. End of credits, you'll see a room full of eyes (around the cake), which means that they just have to be put on the machine.

The song is witty to what it pertains to: Portal and the Half-Life series.

Rock Band is finally outselling the Orange Box and you want more loser compensation?

THIS IS CAPITALISM. THERE TEASING HIM!

Can you provide a reference for that?

Are you including PC sales?

I can't help but feel that this free download is going to hurt future Jonathan Coulton DLC. If you aren't familiar with his work I encourage you to youtube a few of his more popular songs. Code Monkeys, RE your brains, Skullcrusher Mountain, The Future Soon; all these and more would make excellent tracks.

If we give away his arguably most popular song for free on April fools day, it almost sets Jonathan up as a joke. Harmonix I would encourage you to take a look at his other work. It would play well to the nerd/geek crowd. It's probably due to Coulton's efforts himself that we got Still Alive for free. I don't think you should be too worried, as it seems that he's a fairly independent solo act and will continue creating his music. He seems to be the type that does it for the love of the song rather than the money. I wouldn't have minded paying for Still Alive, but that it was free was just incredible.

Coulton definitely had some role in making that happen.

Now you're just trolling.

Oh, this is good stuff.

Anyway, like I said, I don't think giving the song away for free is going to do Coulton much harm. The only risk is that people are probably going to make themselves mighty sick of this particular song after a while.

I think he will survive.

In other words, you dont get the joke because you dont know what you are talking about. The lyrics are not just a "reference to a game."

I'll give you this...unless you've played Portal, and know what it's about, a lot of the irony in the song will be lost on some people as evidenced by your response below.

Now I'm over arguing a trolling pretentious pseudointellectual who think liking Eddie Izzard, a comedian who dresses in drag and makes funny jokes about Star Wars and Squirrels and was probably more overexposed than Still Alive, means that they have a higher IQ than most people.

As for the OP, Coulton makes enough money to do it for a living...and he puts a Creative Commons license on his music for anyone to use and is probably better known and more successful than most of the people griping about a free song in Rock Band.

This has got to be the most ******ed statement yet.
Do I even need to tackle this one?
No? It's too obvious?
Yay.
Let's just point and laugh at this ****** instead.

You might want to come back to reality because the only person being laughed at here is you.

If he really wanted he could have his name added to the song title.
Clearly it's GLADoS just for fun...

Trust me, it's overplayed.
Ever since Portal came out, everyone's been singing that lame song and going "omg the cake is a lie :D"
It's annoying and ******ed. It doesn't feel different from those lame Chuck Norris facts socially inept morons used to spout.

Chuck Norris doesn't need portals. He reaches through time to karate chop you in the face.

I dont see how this is a joke song.

Jack Black is a joke musician
Alien Ant Farm covering smooth criminal, was a joke.

This, is simply just a FUNNY song, in a FUNNY game, that was one of the most enjoying and original 2.25 hours of my life when i first played it.

Spoiler Alert

For those arguing over whether the song is actually funny as compared to just making in game references, if you knew anything about the game( such as the fact that Aperture Science and Black Mesa are two competing research firms), then you would understand why that would be funny. Glados is taunting you that you can't go to Black Mesa because they are rivals of aperture science.

-End Spoiler-

Other then that, this song is great, a nice simple melody, singing is fun, and the drums are interesting. Downloading it for free was awesome and any week we don't have a repeat of the thrash pack can't be a bad week.

I was really hoping that whenever Still Alive got released, that it would be part of a "JoCo" Pack, but I guess 'twas not to be. Hopefully that doesn't mean he's ruled out entirely.

Also, it sounds like some of you really need to reread this post (http://www.rockband.com/forums/showthread.php?t=35667).

While I'm glad the song is free, and I know that Jonathan releases his music under the Creative Commons license, I still feel very strongly about supporting indy artists in terms of financial compensation.

Anyone out there who feels like I do, I urge you to follow my example - visit the online store at www.jonathancoulton.com and drop a few dollars on some of his work that you may not have heard before. I'll be picking up karaoke copies of my favorite songs and making a CD to take to my usual haunt. They'll love Code Monkey, I'm sure.

Obviously, my comment only applies to people who actually like his music and want to support him. I appreciate the fact that the song is free, but since I like it, I want to make sure the artist is properly compensated. I won't shed any tears if you abstain.
