Mic setup questions

Hey, i was wondering whats the ideal setup for a mic when you plan on yelling/screaming into it. For instance, the song 'Are you gonna be my girl' i get into it, by yelling when he yells and such. Am i standing too close to the mic? I have it on a stand, since i like to play guitar along with it. Would setting for the mic turned up too high be a problem, Or was the mic not made to be yelled into?

Turn down the sensitivity. With a stand, it's not hard to step back if you are overmodulating.
