Can't do online band quickplay? Need XBox Gold?

I had been able to do online band quickplay and ranked matches until today. When I signed in today it said that my gold membership had expired. Do you need xbox gold to play against people online or am I doing something wrong? I am signing in the same as usual, but after I pick my xbox live name and click "sign in" it signs in and then takes me back to the screen that says "sign in" instead of the one that says find players/pick a rocker/everything else.

What is going on here? Someone help plz :(

Xbox Live Gold is required to play anything but MMORPG's (like Final Fantasy XI) online on the 360. More than likely, you had the 30 day trial subscription you get when you first sign up for Xbox Live on a new 360 and it expired.
