View Full Version : Gum Rubber Vs The Sock Mod

So, I've been using the sock mod on a QM set for a while now with great results. The ONLY thing I don't like about it is the loss of rebound (which is pretty significant considering how little there is in the first place).

So, a question for the gum rubber users (IBitePrettyHard). Does the gum rubber mod have the same effect, on QM drums, as the sock mod or is it a silencing mod only?

Thanks,
Ian

I love my gum rubber, but I never tried the sock mod. The gum rubber is quieter than the foam I had before, and rebounds much better. I think you will like the rubber better, but since I haven't actually used your setup (not am I you) I can't say forsure. I have EL drums, but I don't think that matters for this.

I think the gum rubber mod is pretty good, but its still not 100% on rolls (for me atleast...) The only think I hate is that it gives random misses, and it seems like I'm getting more and more, but I do love it with the rebound and all...I still use a sock on red once in a while if I feel like it :p I'd say its worth it, I hate playing now without them on.

I have used sock mod for about the last 2 weeks or so now, and love it so much i can't see changing to anything else. If i tried Gum rubber maybe i'd like it more, but sock mod has helped me get so many full combos and gold stars im satisfied with it :D

Ive played on expert for like a month w/o pads but I ordered some from drumshhh and they should be here any time soon.

isn't the purpose of the sock mod to increase sensitivity? the gum rubber pads will significantly decrease sensitivity. they will give you amazing rebound, but unless your set is hypersensitive to begin with (it's a QM so maybe it is?) you might have trouble using them.

i tried the gum rubber pads on both my EL sets, and it was no good. i had to hit it way too hard for the notes to register.

I've been using the sock mod (or, well, towel strips - I think it ends up thinner than socks) on top of gum rubber on my QM and I'm still happy with the sensitivity. It's a fine line though and I do lose combos without bing sure why at times, but I think it's more an issue of my not being careful and letting the stick bounce back on the pad for a double hit.

The rolls work fine though and I still retain a fair amount of the rubber's bounce - it's been a decent compromise in my experience. The sound is also dampened more than with just the rubber.
It sure beats the hell out of the unmodded set, in any case.

The purpose of the sock mod is to prevent excessive vibration from causing missed hits on rolls. AFAIK it's useless on anything but QM.

Take some thin felt mouse pads, cut them into circules, put them on the drum pad heads upside down (felt side down) within the rim of the pad head, and use black electrical to tape them down.

For me it has:
1) Reduced the clanking of hitting the actual drum heads by at lest 50%, much quieter hitting the rubber of the mouse pad.
2) With the pads being upside down your hitting directly on the rubber which helps some with rebound of the sticks. (Probably simular to what the gum rubber mod does)
3) The underside of the mouse pads are black so they look cool and blend in with the black drum head rim
4) Using black electrical tape to tape the mouse pads in place blends in with the rest of the black of everything so you don't see the tape.

The only other thing I did to my drum set was take some of the scrap mouse pad material and cut quarter sized circles and put them inside the drum pad heads under the sensors to help improve sensitivity. What I did has worked great for me and didn't cost me anything cause I stole the mouse pads from work.

Shhhhh!!! ;)

ROFL I did the same thing yesterday! I figured I'd give it a shot before I buy the gum rubber or neoprene pads.

I've had gum rubber since march, love them and wouldn't trade them for the anything.

I used neoprene pads that I bought at Tom Lee Music for real drums and just cut them to size. They work great and they really cut the sound. Good rebound as well. The only downside is that I have to hit the drum pad right in the middle over top of the sensor, or it sometimes doesn't register. That could just be the sensor itself slowly weakening over time (the drums have hours and hours of use at my place).

it's all about foam/cloth mouse pads secured with rubber bands. cuts the sound by probably 65%, gives you better rebound and allows you to pound them harder without any double hits. Oh and it was crazy cheap.

I bought the 1/8" gum rubber pads and really like the feel. However, I lost a lot of sensitivity on my red pad. And I didn't want to try the penny mod or any other mod simply because I'm not comfortable pulling the pads off. (I tried and they didn't seem to budge at all.) So, I pulled the gum rubber off the red pad and put the mouse pad back on and it's working great for me.

If you want gum rubber AND the sock mod, try my "in-between sock mod":
