View Full Version : Release Date/Commercials During VMAs?

Considering the "corporate synergy" between EA/Harmonix/MTV.....
Considering the fact that the Rock Band Tour is kicking off in Vegas this Sunday, the same day as the MTV Video Music Awards (side note: I prefer to call them the Music Video Awards.....after all, they are called music videos, not video musics)
Would it be reasonable to assume that commercials for Rock Band might debut during the VMAs....maybe even with some type of release date information? Or perhaps announcing the Rock Band "Tour Dates"?
(For all you Thread Title Hall Monitors out there, please note the question mark at the end of the title)

That is a fairly decent assumption, it could be possible. I could see some sort of news following the VMAs or possibly hearing something next week. I don't know how much longer they can go without releasing the release date and pricing.

It's just a hunch, but considering MTV's associations with the game, and the fact that the VMAs is the highest rated broadcast MTV puts out every year....not to mention the target demographics for the show would be in line with those for the game.....
It all adds up to being a strong possibility in my mind.
Heck, I wouldn't be too surprised if the game was actually used in some capacity during the award show! I'd rather see some random people playing the game than to watch Britney lip-synch her way through some pathetic song-and-dance routine.

Video games have an older demographic (26+ is majority) than the VMAs (high-school and college aged).
That being said, I can totally see MTV doing something like this. Not unnecessarily at the VMAs, but I'm sure they'd love to be the ones breaking the news. Time will tell.

26+, are you joking? Years of online gaming tells me that more kids are out there screaming into my ear during halo than 26+'ers :)
I'd say 16 or 17-30 would be the biggest age range of gamers.

I'd say 16 or 17-30 would be the biggest age range of gamers.
Here we go:
60% of all gamers are 25 to 44 years old (http://www.games-advertising.com/demographics.html)
nearly a quarter of gamers are over the age of 40. (http://www.mediaweek.com/mw/news/recent_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1000873991)
Thirty five percent of game players are usually under eighteen years, and 65% of game players are over eighteen years old. (http://ezinearticles.com/?Video-Game-Demographics&id=352934)
So, I'd say it all depends on where you get your information from. I'll say your fanbois (OMG this game is going to be amazing I'll do anything to play it now) and vocal online players (You suck, noob. Teabagged!) are frequently under 18 or at least 21. I don't think they're any more prevalent, just more vocal and devote more time to gaming (because they have nothing better to do).
Older gamers, though, have the money. And, apparently, the numbers, so it's probably better to go after the, as well. Of course, you don't want to alienate the younger gamers, but the older ones really aren't that rare anymore.

are you kidding? The demographic for guitar Video Games are in the 10-22 year old range. The demographic between the VMA's and Video Games is pretty much identical, except alot more females than males watch the VMA's, and females don't play video games/

Actually (http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qn4176/is_20060331/ai_n16141006)...
In the gaming population as a whole, some 43 percent of those playing games are women, and women gamers over the age of 18 outnumber boys ages 6 to 17, according to the Entertainment Software Association.
while just 16 percent of "World of Warcraft" players are female, they play just as much as their male counterparts -- an average of 22.7 hours per week.
Also, see my post above.

The majority of gamers are males from the ages of 21-28. It's been proven time and time again.

Very convincing argument...

The VMA target audience may very well skew a little lower than the "average gamer".....but at the same time....there is at least some overlap. It would make sense for MTV to take advantage of a product they are associated with by advertising it during the biggest broadcast they put out each year (and the subsequent bajillion repeats).
By all accounts, this game in particular should have a wider appeal than most other games out there.....so hitting up as many eyeballs as possible (both younger and older than the "average gamer") should hopefully translate (for those standing to make a profit) into greater sales.
Pure speculation.....but if I ran a cable network and had poured big bucks into a foray into the gaming market.....I'd run as many commercials as I could for the product....
The timing and location of the "Rock Band Tour" debuting at the same time/place as the VMAs makes it appear that maybe something could also be hitting the airwaves this Sunday.
They gotta start announcing things at some point.....seems like this is one way to make a big splashy debut.

I'd rather wait till the next day to see the commercials online, than watch mtv music video awards. MTV went down in the 90's and has yet to resurface. Its not even music related anymore, just crap 'reality' tv bs.
The demographic I know of in RL (my friends and family) who are waiting for this game are all over the US drinking age of 21.

"The orgy of synergy will begin at the MTV Video Music Awards in Las Vegas September 9, when several buses equipped with Rock Band demo stations will fan out across the country. Stops will include several college campuses."

Too bad I just visited Vegas at the beginning of August. No vacation trips for me for a while :(
