Marks on drums

Just picked up Rock Band last night - my first time playing - it's awesome! After playing for several hours I noticed I had marks all over my drums - from the drumsticks.
I am assuming this is just normal wear and tear?

Also, a small piece of wood is missing from the tip of one of the sticks? Am I playing too hard?

Its normal for the marks around the edges for beginners happened to me too.
