View Full Version : Has this happened to any other not IRL drummers?

So I was working my way through the expert setlist the other night and I get stuck on Detroit Rock City's silly drum pattern. I played for about 2 hours straight, frustration building slowly every minute, I even went into practice for the first time ever on drums, slowed it right down to about 70%. Played, played, played, couldn't hit it to save my life.
I was so pissed off I ended up leaving for a few hours to grab a beer and chill. So I come back, tv is still sitting there turned on to a failure screen, taunting me. I sit back down and start playing, which I then (God knows how) proceed to 4 star it without a hitch. I sat back and giggled uncontrollably for a few minutes and then fall out boy ruined the rest of my evening. True story. :D

I had trouble with that song at first as well. I couldn't get 50%, so I did it in practice once. After that one practice run, I 4 starred it. It just must be one of those songs... Maybe there is a slight learning curve that seems hard at first but takes a few tries to get over, then it's easy?

WOOOOOOOOOOOA. same thing happend to me, but i did eventually beat Kiss in the setting. the fall out boy song is welp stupid and you will learn to hate that song more than anything else in this god forsaken life we live .... on rock band.

Fall out Boy could ruin any evening :p

Not quite that exact incident, but there were a couple songs, I think detroit rock city may be one of them, where I just couldn't figure out why I couldn't pass them. Then I stopped playing drums for a few days, came back, and passed them without a hitch.

dunno, but I don't see beating fall out boy in the near future without some serious drinking before hand, to at least to dull the pain of losing 64 times in a row.

Sometimes that just happens. Peace of Mind (and beer!) helps I guess...

The thing that really ticks me off is that my Mom is a drummer, (and she kicks ass at it) and I'm SURE there's some rythym infused in my genes somewhere but I can't unleash the full fury of it yet. Though a buddy of mine was pissed that when we fired up the game for the first time ever I did the first 2 tiers on expert drums (I get too bored on easy/med so I usually just go straight for expert) without any prior drum experience. Not that they're particularly difficult, but I thought it was pretty good. At least, more experience than slamming around on my cousins practice kit in the basement for the sake of making noise.

Heh, my scores always go up after a couple drinks. I don't over think it and just get into the rythem. Whenever I start sucking my gf just goes to the frig and gets me a beer lol

She dislikes beer AND rock band. She does, however, like how rock band has given me the initiative to learn drumming, as she is a drummer herself and told me whenever I wanted to dig out her kit I can go get it out of storage.

I find after playing for a bit that I start focusing on the blips on the screen too closely and they stop resembling the rythm. I don't know if that makes sense to anyone else, but sometimes I just have to step away. When I come back, I'll be back to playing the song and not chasing the blips.

Well, I was actually able to five-star Detroit Rock City (Expert) out of the blue after I played Smokin'.

That song gave me the fifth-most trouble out of any drum song on Expert.

1. Run to the Hills (still haven't beaten it)
2. (Don't Fear) The Reaper (drum rolls... *shakes fist*)
3. Orange Crush (see above)
4. Foreplay/Long Time (I got lucky on the intro once, but that was all I needed)
5. Detroit Rock City (It was a lot more trouble the first time on Hard, but the extra red notes messed up my rhythm and I failed a few times on Expert)

I actually beat Dead on Arrival the first time I played it on both Hard and Expert.

I kinda had the same experience. I kept failing Detroit Rock City and was getting super pissed so I stopped for the night. The next day I tried it again but I was in a total "I don`t even care if I pass or not" mood and I totally killed it... well... I wouldn`t say killed it but I passed. You always play better when you just get into the groove and don`t care about your score.

The best is when you have to pee and the big break comes up in Won't Get Fooled Again and you dive off the kit, scream to the can and try to squeeze out an unnaturally long beer leak before the drums come back. lol

the only song on drums that gave me problems was Train kept a rolling.

my red one wouldn't work on the rolls. nothing else gave me a problem though

EXACTLY what happened to me. I beat DRC, and i was all on a high, you know, like "im gonn do this!"
and then friggin FoB comes along and karate chops the hell outta me, and its all over.

I can still ONLY 3 star FoB. And ive 5/g starred EVERYTHING except the last tier and FoB.

Hah I don't believe I could pee alcohol that fast. But I once went to get bagel bites (mini-pizzas) out of the over during that exact part of that song and managed to get back on time; it started beeping like right after the first chorus and we just didn't wanna pause... talk about being into the game :p

That's how the human brain works.

If you're getting frustrated with something, doing it over and over doesn't help. Practicing for a bit, putting it away for a while, and letting your brain subconsciously work at it, does.

That's how I beat Freebird on GH2. I practiced it once or twice, then didn't play it for a while, then came back after a while and smoked it. My brain had just put the pieces together, and I was able to hit the parts I could hit before.

I recently had some back surgury (damn discs anyways) and I always play alot better after a fresh pain pill and muscle relaxer. I always joke with my older kids that I guess I could have played drums for The Stones. :p

Detroit Rock City took a couple of tries, but I managed to get through it on Expert. Except the most recent attempt, where it BROKE MY PEDAL.

Dead on Arrival - after failing to get past 15% or so many times, I gave up on it and came back later to pass it without any trouble.

I Get By... ugh, one time I managed to Get By that insane intro... and later when I saw it was repeated, I thew my hands in the air and gave up.

That song and the mad rolls in Reaper are what's blocking my solo tour now...

I'm working on the last tier of hard now, but goodness - Detroit Rock City's bass notes absolutely crushed me for about 2 hours one night. I failed it a good five times before starting up practice and still getting killed at about 70%.

Once I slowed it down a little more though and got my muscles doing something new, it clicked - I stopped for that night and came back first try the next day (with a fresh leg!) and got it!

I'm still only getting through with some of the harder (hard) songs though, too many off-beat bass notes and my hands start whacking out :(

I was stoked to get 96% on GG&HT my first time through on hard though, when that was probably the toughest medium song for me.

Ohhh, and calibrating the game to the screen made a HUGE difference, I'm still adjusting to playing on time, instead of just a little ahead.

Dead on Arrival worked like this for me. I failed it 20 times, went to sleep, then I came back to about a 50% chance of passing it on a given try (and went up since, I think).

I wish my brain would hurry up and do that for the last two songs (4 if you include the stupid thrash pack, probably more when I buy Metallica), cause it's ruining all my fun. I don't want to play on hard in BWT because it's become boring, but playing on expert means instant fail if a few songs come up which isn't fun either :(

Sorry everyone but I stopped reading the thread when I got to this one. I usually read the full thread to avoid repeats.

Anyway...DUDE!! NO drumset should EVER be left in storage! EVER! You my friend need to go get that puppy out this weekend and clean her up, put it together, tune it and PLAY!! I'm actually being serious right now. It's 1000X better then Rock Band drums plus it will probably help you out a bit with the RB drumming.

I'm not saying slow down on your RB fun, but you need to get your GF to teach you some stuff and you need to have some fun on a real set. Plus you'll find out how much easier a real bass pedal is and you'll want that mod to help your RB playing.

As a bonus, your GF might go and start getting you beers out of the fridge for you showing some interest in the drums. I really hope you consider this. Do yourself a favor and take my advise. If I'm wrong, well you can put them back if you wanted to. Best of luck!!;):)

I had trouble on Green Grass High Tides Forever on hard on drums. The end is incredibly hard. I realized it would let me use my custom drum fills if I didn't use my overdrive so I eventually passed it with 4 stars.

I had a fair amount of trouble with Detroit Rock City. I eventually built up enough frustration to start swearing at Peter Criss (because he could totally hear me :p ) I just saved up my overdrive for the guitar solo/bridge type thing (practice mode says there isn't a solo in the song) and beat it.

Then I beat fall out boy on the second try...because I REFUSED to listen to it again.

I find that frustration itself can be a downward spiral. If I start to feel frustrated, I do worse, which makes me more frustrated and do even worse, etc. But taking a break, even if it's just a couple hours clears your head and you're back to normal. (Usually better, because although you were frustrated earlier and doing poorly, you were still practicing)

Haha, I hear ya mang, I do have a real pedal mod for my rb drums and wow did that make a difference. I was sort of stuck on Paranoid because I broke my pedal trying to heel up the kick drum line in that song. Got my omega pedal, blam, another tier or 2 beat simply because of it. I will have to dig out the drums, but it's getting to be spring here and I should REALLY go outside and work off the excess I seem to have accumulated over the winter. lol

For me on hard the song I've been having the most troubles with is Cherub Rock (much like Go With The Flow and Here it Goes Again earlier in the solo career). I just can't seem to get the timing right with the intro part where is alternates snare and bass drum. Bass, red, red, bass, red, red, bass, red, bass, red, red, base, red, bass, red (or something like that). What really aggrevates me is that I've practiced it about 20 times and the worst I've ever done on 90% speed is 93%, but when I crank it up to full speed I can't get any better than 75%. It's all that intro. The one time I didn't fail out on the intro I screwed up when it goes back to the same sequence halfway through the song. Argh. And not the good pirate argh, the bad pure frustration argh.

That happens to me all the time. To be honest, when I first started drumming I used to think the alternating between bass and a double hit of red and yellow was near impossible. And then I used to think songs like Dead On Arrival and Paranoid was impossible. And then I thought Detroit Rock City was impossible along with Don't Fear the Reaper. And then I never thought I'd be able to pass RttH, but then I did. What's funny about my situation is that I don't even physically practice. After attempting the song several times I memorize the patterns and I know what is supposed to be done so I give it a long break (usually a couple days to a week). I will continue to play other songs but I don't play the ones I can't beat. After playing for a week my skill level had gotten so high I could beat them with no problem (except DFTR and RttH. Those are still a huge biatch).

Anyways, point being is that it happens to me too. I've constantly been getting better and to be honest I think a lot of it comes from watching Sskittzo's and IBitePrettyHard's videos. I think to myself....If IBite can freakin' FC The Perfect Drug, then I should be able to pass it....and I did pass it the other day. :D

The only time I REALLY go into practice mode is for some drum rolls to figure out the number of notes and how I'm going to hit them.

Cherub rock took me a few times as well on the intro. You need to keep a consistant beat with no lag between hits on the bass and snare. These hits are in 3/3 or 3/4 time. So this is you can count it... one trip let-two trip let-3 tip let and so on, bass snare snare bass snare snare (bass being one, snare being trip and snare being let [1triplet]). Make sence? Sort of hard to explain with words. It's a 1-2-3 patern with NO break or time adjustment between hits. Also it's a pretty quick pace, but you'll get it.;)
