If I want to move onto expert--and do alright--at some stage, am I going to need to learn how to do alternative strumming (i think that's the term? when you go up and down anyway)? Right now, I just do one way, and my timing gets thrown off even more when i start moving in the other direction

I know what you mean. I can strum up and down when its constant chords or whatever, but as soon as its a green - green/yellow - green - green/yellow kinda situation i just have to go back to normal strumming. I've tried to get it but it just wont work. Hope you have better luck than me, lol

Basically for those stretch hits (green-yellow alternating, etc.) you're best off holding the one on the left and tapping the one on the right. You can do that with single taps or strumming, it just takes practice. The best song to learn how to strum on would probably be I Wanna Be Sedated on Expert in GH I. Once you get strumming down on that one song, you can strum on anything. If you only have GHII, I'd say Trippin' A Hole In A Paper Heart on Expert.

honestly the only way your gonna get the hang of it is with practice. I had a friend who was able to play that way from the very beginning, and it took me a while longer. Now, all of my closer friends and I that play, play on expert, and without up and down strumming it would be nearly impossible to play the songs well. (even harder in the first game than the second, as the hammer-on/pull off's are a lot easier in II.) Just keep working on it, and you'll get the hang of it, by now I don't even feel much of a difference between a down strum and an up strum.

back and forth green and yellow type stuff can be tough
i usually strum up and down on time
and leave yout first finger on green
then just tap onto yellow and take it off before the next green
it takes practice but it works
trippin on a hole in a paper heart is a good song to practice
and x-stream is a good strum timing song too

It really does take practice. I was really thrown off the first times i did it and sometimes i get thrown off now, but you will get used to it.

If you have guitar hero 1, "The Breaking Wheel" really helped me out alot on double strumming. But then, I still just single when it's an 1/8th note or slower. I'm about 90% more accurate that way, assuming it is straight chords and not a HO/PO scale or something.

The click struming noise in GH is so annoying I'm glad my strat doesn't do that and I can tap solos
