Actual cowbell allowed?

Does anyone know how the software actually registers mic hits for the cowbell and tambourine parts? I'd like to get an actual cowbell and tambourine for me and my friends to use during those sections, and I'd think that at least the cowbell should register fine as a loud, sharp sound.

I would think it registers the noise you make when you hit the head of the microphone.

I think it might register the actual hit, because not everyone I have seen do it, hits it on the top of the microphone.

It likely recognizes the sound from the vibration of the hits.
