View Full Version : The Offspring: Why we won't get full album DLC from them.

I've been considering Offspring DLC packs for a while now, and recently I got onto the idea of "Hey, full album download" Then I thought about this some more and realised that album DLC is incredibly unlikely. (Still hoping for a pack)
First, we have to consider which albums could be released. Let's go through the list shall we?
1. The Offspring- Too obscure- NO
2. Ignition- Too obscure- NO
3. Smash- Breakthrough album- YES
4. Ixnay On The Hombre- Followup, not popular enough- NO
5. Americana- Mainstream success- YES
6. Conspiracy of One- Followup, not popular enough- NO
7. Splinter- Not popular enough- NO
So what are we left with?
Smash and Americana.
The problem is, neither of these are suitable as a whole album. Sure some tracks will be, but not the whole. Lets deal with them one at a time:
Smash:
OK, the main problem with this album is the language. Now, not all the songs are filled with vulgar expletives, but lets take the song 'Bad Habit', for example. 'Bad Habit' is known for it's chant-along section in the middle, to which the lyrics are:
"Drivers are rude,
Such attitudes,
When I show my piece,
can plain see something's odd,
Feel like I'm God,
You Stupid, Dumbs**t, Goddam, Motherf**ker!"
As fun as this is to sing along to live, it's not really Rock Band material is it?
Also, there is the problem of 'Killboy Powerhead', which (besides it's langage issues), is a cover, and so licensing issues my ensue.
Americana
Ok, here's specific problems at a glance:
Pretty Fly (For A White Guy)- The "give it to be baby" bit at the beginning. Switching between two voices, one silly male, one silly female. Do you chart the female? Do you put the "uh-huhs" in as speaky parts? You can't cut this section out, as it's repeated throughout the song? Do you chart any of it?
Feelings- It's a parody/reworking of a famous love song. I'm not sure how parodies work, licencing wise, so this is a bit iffy.
Walla Walla- There's a little skit/sketch in the middle which it would be wrong to cut (especially as there's music going on underneath), but also impossible (and a little silly) to chart for vocals. Just a little awkward, logistics wise.
Why Don't You Get A Job- Guitar is just strumming of chords. Bass is wonderful though. Drums seem too dull too. Also, doesn't really fit the Rock Band format. Too many background instruments that the tune relies on.
Americana- Great, if it wasn't for the language. Every chorus starts with "Well F**k You", not really Rock Bandish
Pay The Man- Great song, but 3 Minutes before vocals come in.
Here's hoping that the Offspring's new album is brilliant and they pull a marketing play by releasing it on Rock Band at the same time as normal release. (They'd be up for digital distribution, they once tried to give away one of their albums for free, long before the whole Coldplay thing)
While I'm here, I'll suggest an Offspring pack for DLC
-The Kids Aren't Alright
-Self Esteem
-Can't Repeat/Defy You
Loads of people want Defy You. But Can't Repeat seems to fit the gameplay of Rock Band so much better.

YES dude! I love The Offspring. I'd like to see that pack with Can't Repeat (seeing as it's my favorite song by them). The difficulty level for most Offspring songs wouldn't be all too high, but that'd fine with me... ;)

I'd pass on The Offspring. None of the '90s punk stuff interests me.

hehe, that's interesting (well a little interesting), I may like 90s Punk but I'm also a Maiden fan like you. Funny how people's music tastes work, eh?

Ixnay on the Hombre would be the best choice for a full album. I know you say its not super popular, but damnit it has their best songs on it. Gone Away, Cool to Hate, Meaning of Life, I Choose, Way Down the Line, Don't Pick it Up and All I Want. This was their critically aclaimed album.

"Gone Away" is a solid and VERY familiar song from Ixnay on The Hombe. It would fit RB very well.

If they put out an Offspring pack without Come Out and Play...yah that won't be pretty.

Ummmm. . . I don't get it.
Why worry about getting any one single album where it will be hit or miss on favorite singles. Why not just develop their Greatest Hits album?
I think this is the way to go with any DLC album. I think Who's Next is a total mistake when the Who's Greatest Hits would make more sense and let's face it, due to lead poisoning, Nirvana's Nevermind is a Greatest Hits album of sorts.
Stick with Greatest Hits albums and I don't think you can go wrong.
Even with my own favorite group U2, I would love to see Achtung Baby!, but how many others would rather see Joshua Tree or War?
A Greatest Hits album seems like it should be a no brainer. Sure you are getting nothing but hits, but you are also avoiding the eventual argument "Dude, that "album track" blows. . . Why did you release that when "this song" was at the top of the Headbanger 400 for 78 weeks man!"
P.S. There would be obvious exceptions like Nevermind, Sublime's Sublime is an incredible album beginning to end, but thanks to Brad Nowell's untimely exit, isn't it alot like Nirvana??? I hesitate to say Michael Jackson's Thriller is like this too, but I think I'd commit suicide before I spent my hard earned dough on that work. . . but you get the idea.

I was actually just thinking about how awesome this would be in Rock Band. Why not a simple tambourine/rhythm segment for the singer during the sketch?
Americana- Great, if it wasn't for the language. Every chorus starts with "Well F**k You", not really Rock Bandish
Who cares? They blatantly censor the f*ck in Shockwave... several times. "I'll take your ----in' life". Doesn't diminish from the experience, in my opinion. I'll agree that the Bad Habit lyrics wouldn't really work... but as long as it's not every other word, I wouldn't rule it out of DLC.

Rockband needs more fast and furious songs (ahem, gh) that get everyone amped up. I love Bon Jovi, but that doesn't light my fire as well as some driving stuff from the offspring or some other not so appreciated bands do. That being said, songs like Genocide and Million Miles Away definately fit that bill. I think the poppy "Pretty Fly for a White Guy" style songs that got radio time for the Offspring take away from their cred as a rocking band. Too bad, making money tends to obscure your real talent I guess (I'm staring at you Metallica).
Do whats right, Vote Rockacratic on DLC!

you do know they released a greatest hits CD right? Why not that one. I would love to get some offspring.

Yeah, I have it.
I didn't think that a Greatest Hits would be the sort of thing they want for full album DLC. I'd be VERY happy if they released the Greatest hits as full album DLC, so many great songs on it.
Also, I wasn't aware of the censoring ingame... if so, some of my suggestions may be possible. Thanks Exayle

as much as i'd love to see a full album download of Americana, i would be a very happy camper with absolutely any Offspring tracks
and i totally agree about the Greatest Hits album. absolutely love it, haha

Just judging by the DLC released so far, I think we may only get 1 track rather than a full pack.
In that case, I'd want The Kids Aren't Alright or Can't Repeat. TKAA is the better song, but Can't Repeat fits the Rock Band gameplay better.

They censor a lot, like in Creep, the original is "You're so f***ing special", but they use the radio edit "You're so very special"
Most of the big hits with the swearing have radio edits with the worst already cut out.

Just wanted to say that my personal favorite Offspring song for Rock Band would be She's Got Issues.

Ixnay on the Hombre was #9 on Billboard's top albums, and in terms of sales, it's gone platinum.
That's obscure? What are you smoking?

Why does OP suggest Can't Repeat and Kid's Aren't Alright?
Aren't they technically the same song just with a slight change in lyrics, ala Aquabats "Chemical Bomb" and "The Wild Sea"
