*start rant

If you play guitar online quickplay, and your the last guitarist to enter the lobby, you are bass first! After that then the every other rule comes into play switching with the "other" guitarist, yes there is another guitarist in the room, between bass and guitar. If you only want to play bass then no every other rule need to apply unless for some strange reason both guitarists want bass which i've never witnessed.

If you are the type of person that just keeps clicking guitar and fighting with the other guitarist then no one will ever want to play with you and you'll probably never meet any skilled players because this is how all the skilled players do it.

I don't care how much better or worst you are than the other guitarist, there needs to be a "fair" amount of playing time as "guitar". I play expert and even when there is someone who plays guitar on easy wants the guitar i always switch off.

Now I can't just rant off the players as this is not entirely their fault. HMX please fix the "if both players pick the 'guitar'" system, it doesnt work. It should switch off every other time, not just random 50% chance. I was fighting with another guitarist for maybe 10 songs i got all bass, the system is flawed.

These are all very valid points and great ideas. I play bass, so I don't have to fight with other guitar players (and yes, I got into a room with another bassist once; we alternated). The thing about alternating who's guitar if both pick it could be done with an update pretty easily, I imagine.

I know exactly what you mean. I was playing with some random people online, and the other guitarist just kept picking guitar for all the songs. And no matter how fast I think I can call guitar first or whatever, I always get punted down to bass. >;[

After putting up with that for like.. 10 songs, I finally left to find other people to play with. :\

Agree with the OP for the most part, but I gotta say I get annoyed when someone's on easy or medium and insist on playing guitar when I'm doing 98-99% on Expert. If you're still learning, there's plenty to be learned by playing Bass.

I'll usually just find a new game in this situation, I don't try to wrestle guitar from them.

Also, last one in is Bass first is silly. Let the game's coinflip decide who gets what to start off, then start swapping.

I've only quick played once since I have an online band consisting of friends that I play with regularly. I'm afraid I broke this rule since I wasn't sure how it worked. The first song we loaded up I figured the other guitarist would pick guitar and lock me into playing bass, but he never made a selection so I picked guitar. After that I did alternate between bass and guitar for every other song we played.

No one ever said anything so I figured it was OK.

What do you mean by "locked in"? I've never been locked in. Either the two players alternate or it's random.

One solution is to be able to select your instrument before matching. If you select guitarist, then online matching will put you in a group that needs guitarist. If there's no opening (most likely), then, as usual, it starts a new band with you as band leader and no other guitarists can join. It'll be harder to get matched up if you pick guitarist but no fighting, and might even encourage people play other instruments. There could be an option for locking instruments, alternate guitar/bass, or current way of fighting for guitar.

Well like I said I'm not sure how the system works. I figured that if I selected guitar first it would force the other player to play bass and vice versa. I didn't know it was random if both players picked the same instrument.

It would be nice to set a "preference" when you play online.

If you want to play all Bass, and the other player all Guitar, then it works out great, everyone is happy, and everyone can see who wants to do what w/o the need of voice communication.

If both players want to play guitar or bass, then there should be a option the leader can set to force alternation.

I've been in bands before where we'll both pick guitar and he ends up being the guitarist 8-9 times out of 10, thats just not fair, and it creates an unfriendly playing environment.

HMX posted an article about social interactions in online play a few weeks back, I really wish they'd follow some of the advice that was included in the article when it comes to implementing online play.

I ALWAYS choose Bass Guitar first. and if the other guitarist is kind enough to let me do lead, I'll continue playing, and switch back to bass next song. If not, after the current song I leave and find a cooler player.

Ditto. Hah, maybe that other bassist was me for all we know. :)

Lots of good suggestions in this thread for improvements.

Sometimes i also notice the other guitarist hanging on the guitar icon to see if im gonna stay bass or if i want guitar, so i leave my icon at guitar but so does he. If he's indicating to me that he wants to play lead by hanging his cursor over guitar, then shouldn't my cursor hanging denote the same exact thing? I guess some people just don't get it.

Also just because you bring 2 other people from your home in the band doesn't mean you get lead every single song, that's just not right.

exclusive bass player here. But dont mind giving it up if a conflict occurs. Sorry to hear that so many people just want to play Guitar Parts

The bass in "...And Justice For All" and GGAHT are some of the funnest to play.

If I'm the second guitarist to an online game, I invariably select bass but give the primary guitar player time to choose bass if that's their preference.

If I'm the first guitarist to the game and the newcomer takes guitar, I'm either fine with it and will play bass for one song before alternating (or staying there if I'm in the mood) or I'm frustrated by having played bass for five consecutive one-and-done bands.

In that instance I'll either leave the band, or let the game sit at the guitar selection screen and go and do something else (eg. fix a drink, use the bathroom) for a few minutes... a mild (and probably petulent) statement of discontent. :D

I always alternate online (unless the other guy wants bass) but the first song comes down to how badly I want to play the guitar part for it.

If they pick GGaHT, I want guitar! If they pick something like say it aint so, I don't give a ****, and I'll just pick bass.

After the first song, I alternate.

Don't play expert and most likely never will.
Don't care what part I play (but it is nice to be given the choice every now and then).
I have ran into several of the expert bass players and while I am happy to defer, they still choose bass (except for the occasional song) and it is such a nice change. Feels strange playing lead each time but they have always ended up being fun sessions and this seemed as good of a place as any for me to pass on my thanks.
