So, what bands has everyone found through the Rock Band and Guitar Hero games? I have discovered the following:

Iron Maiden: I found out about Maiden first from Guitar Hero II with "The Trooper". I enjoyed the song so I bought it off of iTunes. My friend then showed me his favorite song, "These Colours Don't Run" and I liked it. However, it wasn't until about two months ago that I made an effort to learn Maiden's music. I bought The Number of the Beast and loved it. About a month ago, I saw them live, then I decided to go on a spree and buy a bunch of their albums. I now own nine out of their fourteen records.

Metallica: I came across Metallica first with "One" in Guitar Hero III. Then, when I got Rock Band, I got the Metallica pack and loved all of the tracks, so I bought ...And Justice For All at the same time I got The Number of the Beast. After listening to it for two months, I decided to get Master of Puppets and Ride the Lightning just about a week ago. I've fallen in love with the old sound and plan on getting Kill 'Em All soon.

Bang Camaro: Really no explanation needed. I just found these guys and got their album. They friggin' rock. 'Nuff said.

The Sword: I first heard "Freya" in Guitar Hero II. I loved their classic metal sound and got their debut album, Age of Winters. I instantly fell in love with them. Just about two weeks ago, their second album, Gods of the Earth, came out. This record ranks in my top five greatest albums ever made.

Nine Inch Nails: "The Perfect Drug". That's really all I have to say.

I'd not heard of many of the bands in the GH games, honestly. But if you mean discovered as in started to listen to, there haven't been any. Most of the songs I've really loved were either bands I already liked/knew (Metallica, Megadeth, Iron Maiden), or bands that I checked out other songs and they ended up all sucking (I.E. their only good song happened to be in the game, like Coheed and Cambria, Pantera, Dio).

Bang Camero, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam (the last two are related to Soundgarden and Nirvana), Black Tide, Blue Oyster Cult, Rush, The Clash, The Ramones, etc...

GH: Velvet Revolver, Black Sabbath, Guns And Rose, Motorhead, Rage Against The Machine (got more into them), and any other band like RHCP or Sublime that I already listened to I got more into.

Bands from RB I started listening to:

The Outlaws
Deep Purple
Mountain (Kinda from GH3 too, but yeah)

GH3:
The Fall of Troy
Impulse
Revolverheld
Priestess
Prototype

GH2:
Bang Camaro
Anarchy Club
The Living End

GH1:
Burning Brides
Artillery (Now the Breaking Wheel)
Drist
The Slip

Granted there are LOTS of other bands I love from these games, even some of the obscure ones I already knew about. These are just the new ones that I was introduced to.

Guitar Hero: Franz Ferdinand, Stevie Ray Vaughn (knew OF but never listened to), Freezepop, Blue Oyster Cult

Guitar Hero 2: Lynyrd Skynyrd (same as SRV), Allman Brothers Band, Stray Cats, Rush (same as SRV and Skynyrd), Bang Camaro

Guitar Hero 3: Muse

Rock Band: The Killers (yeah, I know it's also in GH3, but I had Rock Band first)

It takes a while for me to love songs so much I must buy a CD sometimes, so that's why GH and GH2 has so many but the newer games don't. Honestly, GH3 won't get much more than Muse just because it in general doesn't have a great setlist, but I'm already considering adding a couple more bands to the Rock Band list.

Uhhh not even close to "same as".

There aren't any bands that I've gotten into from RB or GH. If anything theres been alot of bands that I make an effort to avoid. in RB just every single song from the bonus tour except for the Flyleaf song. Every band in that part of the tour.... how exactly did they get in the game? Did they pay to get in it? Same as the bonus songs in GH 2 and 3. maybe 2 worth playing multiple times.

Avenged Sevenfold and Coheed & Cambria are the two bands that I was wholly unfamiliar with before GH / RB and really like now because I heard their songs. There are a ton of other bands from these two games that I really like, but I had heard of them already.

The Living End and Anarchy Club are about it, I was fans of all the badass modern bands nobody'd heard of anyway (like Black Tide and A7X for example; wanting to play BatH was the only reason I ever played GH in the first place).

On a related note, I got into Bad Religion after hearing them in an NCAA Football game, believe it or not. The song was Atomic Garden, to this day my favorite song of their's. If EA liked it enough to put it in that game, how about putting it in RB now? :D

From Rock Band, Queens of the Stone Age, Radiohead, The New Pornographers, and Coheed and Cambria come to mind off the top of my head. (Well, I knew of all of them before Rock Band, but the game has drilled them into my head, which can have two effects: I will grow to temporarily hate it or permanently adore it.) Also made me more open to listen to before-I-was-born bands like The Police, Boston, and The Ramones (then there's Oasis, and I don't know quite when they came about so I can't be sure if they fall in that category. Probably not, actually.) And of course, the Harmonix bands that I'd never heard of like Bang Camaro and Count Zero and Death of the Cool. (And Freezepop. But I already knew Freezepop from a friend.)
Overall, looking at the list, it's made my music taste a lot more diverse. Admittedly, that's not saying much; I was in a tiny little musical bubble before Rock Band. (But now I'm more open-minded. Thanks, Harmonix! </this sounds like a bad infomercial>)

If it matters, which it does, Guitar Hero III effectively enlightened me to Muse (I knew who they were before, but I didn't really care; how silly of me.), and I can't be more thankful, as they're now my favorite band.

Wow, I feel old after reading most of these posts! Just getting into Metallica, NIN, Nirvana, Iron Maiden..... Yeah, I must be old. lol!

I can't really say that RB has gotten me into any bands I didn't previously know but it maybe got me to appreciate some songs/artists more.

You misunderstood him. He noted that he had heard Stevie Ray Vaughn but had not listened to his music. He was saying this was the same case, not that the two were similar musically.

GH didn't really turn me on to any new bands - I knew of most of them already and was more or less set in my listening tastes. GH3 did increase my interest in The Killers and Muse - I haven't gone out and bought their music but I'll listen to it more frequently on the radio.
Impulse was the coolest bonus song in the game.

RB has gotten me interested in Yeah Yeah Yeahs and some of the bonus bands - Vagiant and The Mother Hips. Also I listen to Radiohead and Weezer more often now.

I take it you don't listen to the radio too much. :p

I live in Vermont. We've got two classic rock stations, a ****ty top 40 station, and an alt. rock station. The only station I get at my house is a classic rock station since their radio antennae is right next to our house. So close that I have sometimes heard the radio transmissions through my Xbox Live microphone.

That said, I knew of the bands, but I didn't explore them until after I heard their music in the game. I had heard Iron Maiden only once when I was younger with "Run to the Hills" being played in a bowling alley, but nothing beyond that. I always thought that they were a hair metal band.

With Metallica, "Enter Sandman" and "The Unforgiven", both songs from their eponymous album, are the only songs played on the mainstream radio, so I never had the chance to hear the good stuff like "Master of Puppets" and "For Whom the Bell Tolls".

With Nine Inch Nails, I just never knew when I was listening to them. I had heard the name, though. "Closer" I heard a lot as a kid on the radio and "The Hand That Feeds" and "Only" were songs that got a lot of mainstream radio airplay, so I heard them a lot, but never knew it was Nine Inch Nails. Once I heard them in Rock Band, I was like, "Oh, that's Nine Inch Nails?" I got the pack and "The Perfect Drug" motivated me to get some of their stuff.

Heard Nirvana for the first time. I'd heard OF them, but never heard their music.

Yes... I was living on another planet in the 80's & 90's. And I'm Grateful!!
