View Full Version : Rock Band and Scoring

First off, let me tell you that I am completely sold for Rock Band (I've got the Special Edition Preordered and all that). As a Scorehero.com member, however, I am very curious about the score system of the game.

The thing that is kinda worrying me is the "fills" throughout the songs (Most notably the drums). I've seen in multiple IGN videos that during the drum fills, the guys just go nuts on the drums! It looks pretty hilarious, but sounds horrible.

I love the idea of giving the gamer the freedom to just bang away, play their own little beat or whatever during the fills, but are they doing that to get more points? If that is the case, I am slightly disappointed. I certainly understand why their getting the points, but whoever bangs the drums the fastest shouldn't determine the better drummer. I mean, in the art of music, is the better drummer the one who can bang on them the fastest? No, an outstanding drummer probably can go fast, but it's not completely random like that.
What if I score 100% throughout the song, but I don't go nuts on the fills and a guy does an Animal on it and scores higher? That's an extreme exaggeration, but you get the point.

I am really rambling now, so let me get to the point. If these fills are worth points, then the hits shouldn't each be worth the same amount of points, they should depreciate. Like the first five hits are worth 100, while the next five hits are worth 50, and so on. This way, after about 15 - 20 hits, the score would increase only incrementally, and wouldn't affect the outcome as much.

Thoughts? Pointless topic?

Also, first post.

I think it sounds so bad because your hearing them actually hit the drums because they are loud. At least, thats what i think I hear. Not actually the sound from the game itself.

I cringe every time I see them just bang randomly, as fast as the can. :(

You have a good point, but a bad solution (IMO)
I think that instead of making the points become lower for every beat in the fill, just make the fill worth the same amount of points every time. that way if you play 100 beats in the fill, you get the same amount as someone who does 8 beats in the fill. Even if it sounds terrible.

I like that solution as well. I was really hoping that it worked that way...until I saw the IGNers going nuts...

I totally understand where you're coming from on this, banging away incessantly on the drums doesn't make a true "fill"... We'll see how that ends up working, however, since it seems that those fill sections are punctuated by the single-note hit, which activates star power, maybe it's more set up to where the more hits you get in that section, the more star power you've got banked up. I don't know, i haven't really paid much attention to that minor detail, however, it would be kind of weak if you could just have your friend stand there with a second pair of sticks and bang away on two pads while you hit the other two for those sections. I'm hoping it banks star power.

^^this. I was feeling it would be kinda like how the whammy works on the guitar, or, at least I hope, haha

I do to, actually.

I just wish that there were algorithms that were able to quantify "musical" elements to fills. The more in-time and "theoretically correct" a fill, the more star power you bank.

However, Rock Band does not have a HAL-type function, and is not that smart. So, beats for star power it is.

Yeah, doing a fill is an all-or-nothing thing, for exactly the reasons people here have described. You can play a really restrained fill and still get just as much benefit as someone going nuts.

That's great news, and another fine example of HMX doing the right thing, making great decisions for this game. You guys are my heroes.

Welcome to the board. Do your fellow SH'ers know you are here? LOL.

And once again, another SH member taking a game for more than what it is suppose to be. Fun instead of a chore for getting top score. LAME!

That's a bit harsh, dude. I've never submitted a score to ScoreHero, but I've always liked their site. I've gotten a lot of tips and tricks there that made be a better GH player. Thus increasing my enjoyment.

Harmonix is obviously a fan of the site as well.

Agreed. I think we can all coexist happily, and obviously HMX keeps the head-to-headers in mind with stuff like all fills being worth the same regardless of who pounds away fast enough. There definately are two very different types of rythm gamers though...the co-opers and the head-to-headers I call 'em. And while Rock Band does seem to tilt towards the co-opers a bit, while the GH games appear to be heading towards the head-to-headers, I still think we'll all find enjoyment in both.

Obviously someone can't sense the sarcasm. Notice the welcome message, then the LOL? If not, read again...

Also, if you'd search. You would see that I hold a log in at SH with updated scores as well....I just don't take it to the extreme. I know, I'm a loser....*sarcasam

Hehe, I am the same way myself. (Barely) have earned the famed Log guitar myself, but I do not subscribe to the "points whoring" tactics and ridiculous crap they pander to.

Got to have a little fun and sarcasm with folks who take things that seriously. :)

Ahh, yes. I really need to get around to ordering that Sarcasm Detector Add-on from my Internet Provider.

I also agree with this method, although there should be a minimum amount of hits needed to get the points. Otherwise you'd get the reverse situation the TC stated.

I joined SH back with GH1 to see how I stacked up, only to find I was in like the 500's.

Then I saw the crazy scores the score whores had, and knew it was a pointless venture.

This is EXACTLY why I don't bother submitting ANYTHING to SH. A while back, I thought to myself:

"Hey, I just five-starred Less Talk, More Rokk for the first time! I wonder how my score would stack up!"

*load up SH scoreboards*

".... F*ck me sideways. nevermind."

I had some pretty decent scores on some of my favorite bonus songs (All of This) and a few from GH2 shortly after release. Of course, by now they're reached the 1,000s, so I couldn't really care less...
