View Full Version : Pop Rock DLC - Female Attraction

Yes, I know there are female guitar hero masters that could probably shred me effortlessly. This is not directed at them, rather it's aimed at bringing all the long-suffering Guitar Hero (soon to be Rock Band) widows into the fold.

I've developed this weird issue over the last few months where whenever I hear a song, my brain starts picking it apart and thinking how much it would rock (or not) in Rock Band. I'm sure I'm not the only one with this problem. :)

Anyway, my fiance got control of the car radio the other day, and subjected me to Pink's "You and Your Hand". My brain started picking it apart, and I realized...it wouldn't kill me to play this, it's got an okay riff, decent drums, and my fiance would have a blast singing it.

As the majority of us RB fans are male, and quite a few of us have live-in wives or girlfriends that have a lot of influence over how our free time is spent, it might not be such a bad idea to throw some pop rock (defining this as pop songs that still have actual instruments involved) in as DLC. While I certainly wouldn't want to spend loads of time playing Kelly Clarkson or No Doubt, I would get to play a lot more, and after a few beers it would be a blast to back up my fiance as she's singing. It would also open up the field for more female vocalists, because let's face it, the female rock vocalist category is rather small.

Just throwing it out there, and yes, I realize that suggesting Kelly Clarkson as Rock Band DLC has forever tainted, if not utterly destroyed, my rock cred. :D

I agree certain pop songs could be handled pretty well in Rock Band. Also it wouldn't kill anyone if they were in there as DLC. I personally wouldn't buy them, and I don't know how many people would, I would for the most part be staying away from most of the pop songs. I still think it is a good possibility, and the point of DLC is so that people can expand their song library in whichever direction they want.

I think Harmonix will cast a wide net on DLC. You'll see the good rock bands (Metallica, Nirvana, Pumpkins, Who, Grateful Dead) but I think you'll also see them explore a lot of the other niches, including pop and country.

BTW, that's a good thing. Growing the market only makes the game better for all of us. As long as they're not putting that stuff on the core disc, the more genres the better.

My wife and I share almost the same taste in Rock music, but yeah she also tends to lean more towards the pop genre than I do. I certanly wouldn't mind to see those type of songs as DLC. I say make it available and let people choose. I for one would be happy to buy a pop rock song if it meant that my wife would enjoy this game a lot more. :)

Yeah, if Edwin McCain was on DLC I would get to play RockBand forever.

You guys bring up a good point. I know my wife would probably be more excited about 80's hair bands than modern pop rock, though.

Time for a new fiance!

The old one listened exclusively to Natalie Merchant. This one is much better and even likes 80s hair bands (but she doesn't usually drink enough to attempt singing it). :D

I think Harmonix is on track for this line of thinking. Hole's Celebrity Skin struck me as this sort of choice, as well as that Jet song.

My girlfriend was actually extremely into Guitar Hero, but I could tell she was craving some more pop in the selections. Just a handful of songs geared for her would have hooked her for life, so I'm truely hoping their pop offerings expand, even though it will make the Rock snobs sniffle. :(

I think just by throwing in these more well known and more popular songs they are appealing to a larger audience, including females.

I'm sure that they'll do this. I mean, you can't cover all genres but one. It's just not right. I'm not sure if I'll personally buy it (probably will, if it's priced at a buck a song. Sanely priced DLC doesn't come often, y'know?), but I'm sure you'd make your money's worth.

I'm a female and god please no more pop rock. Maybe its because I'm probably the least female person I know (I mean I dress female and have female body parts, but my personality is totally male oriented, I'm obnoxious, like video games, and make a fool of myself on a constant basis!)...but god, please please no pop songs.

They're not for you. Your existence on this message board shows that you'd be perfectly happy rocking out with the rest of us. The idea is to get otherwise uninterested women to play, therefore letting us use Rock Band time as "quality time" and getting to dominate the living room that much longer.

I actually didn't mean to make the point quite so gender based. Think of it this way. Sacrifice a few songs to pop, and all you have to do is skip those songs when you play the game. In return, HMX makes the cold hard cash money when they pull in all the pop lovers of the world, and this equals more Rock Band sequels, expansions, and DLC. Everybody wins, and all those of us with a little more taste have to do is skip a few songs.

Especially since it's looking like we get to make our own playlists for our concerts, if you don't like a song, you can literally go your entire life without ever touching it. :D
