This was an updated article at 1up (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3162751):
UPDATE: 1UP contributor Andrew Podolsky also managed some hands-on time with the "new" Manhunt 2, and shared his thoughts on the changed experience in an updated preview:
"Now gamers want to know what Rockstar changed in the super-violent sequel to merit an M rating instead of the un-publishable AO, and unfortunately for fans of gore it's the stealthy executions that have gotten the axe. Dark and grainy filters now obscure every single stealth kill, leaving much of the murdering to the imagination. You can barely see what's happening, but you will hear the struggle. There are some grunts, and sound effects like a crunch or slice, but the in-your-face executions are now hidden behind a wall of visual noise.
The up close animations, while disturbing and unpleasant, were the big draw for fans of the first game and one of the most talked about aspects of the sequel. Losing them undoubtedly affects the gameplay: Without the visual payoff, there's little incentive to risk detection by attempting the most violent kills. It seems better to just go for the quick sneak attack, since you won't be able to see the slaughter anyway."
-----
To Harvest or not to Harvest, that is the question;
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The pipes and bullets of outrageous Splicers,
Or to take arms against a horde of Big Daddies,
And by opposing, end them. To die, to sleep...

IMHO things like this result from an older demographic of elected officials who are totally out of touch with technology.
Twenty years from now history will laugh at this.

what the hell is 1up talking about? Anyone play entirely through the first one? If so do you feel the cutscenes showing the kills were the "big draw"? Man, about 1/4 through the game they really grew tiresome for me while the gameplay actually improved as the game progressed (introduced the run n gun elements etc) ....anyway my enjoyment of Manhunt had nothing to do w/ the cutscenes...

so now it seems you'll still have to sit through cutscenes, but they won't show anything.

i'm not one of those people who are like "OMG WATCHIGN PPPL DIE IS SOOO COOL" but thats what made manhunt special in the first place. now instead of watching you bash someone's skull in, we're just gonna hear it

We have people like Jack Thompson who run around blaming EVERYTHING bad on video games...hes mentally unstable, yet people listen to him.
Video games are an art form, just an interactive art form. Some art (ex: Joel Peter Witkin who is a famous photographer) is meant to be really really edgey and offensive.
Us gamers are just going to have to get used to being caught in the middle of a battle between the industry and the nay-sayers who get offended by the smallest stuff, because honestly, I dont see it ending. Game devs are going to keep pushing out games with offensive material and the offense taking people are going to keep fighting back against it.
For me, Manhunt could have been so much more violent, so I personally really dont care about the Manhunt franchise and what controversy is deals with. Same with GTA...I got so bored with GTA4, that now I could care less how raunchy and offensive it gets.

The first one was awesome for its gameplay, not the death scenes. Since it's releasing in the busy holiday, I won't bother to buy it anyways.

I remember being much younger and more immature when the first one came out. Me and my buddy got to the pig headed boss, and if you looked closely, you could see his shlong dangling around. I was like..."They cant do that in video games!" as I proceeded to giggle immaturely.

Never played the first one as it was banned here, plus the gameplay just didn't sound that exciting on paper to be honest.. same goes for the second one, but I would have given it a go just to run through all the gorey sequences a couple of times and show em off to people. I mean it's it's big gimmick after all.
But yeah, screw this. I mean the MPAA is a bunch of assninjas no question, but it's doubtful that they'd have given this an NC-17/AO kiss of death (and if so it would have gotten an "R" just by edging out a few seconds here and there in the cutscenes.. not masking them all). Double standards for video games I guess.

Weeeeaaaaaak...
This marks a decisive defeat for the video game industry, and will unfortunately set a precedent for the artform in both the corporate eye and also that of the politicians.
Jack Thompson, I believe, is the leading cause of idiocy in the arts and media industries, not just video games. Check this asinine passage from the wikipedia page:
Thompson also took issue with [a] 2 Live Crew song, Banned in the USA. Thompson sent a letter to Jon Landau, manager of Bruce Springsteen, whose song Born in the USA was to be sampled by the group. Thompson suggested that Landau "protect Born in the U.S.A. from its apparent theft by a bunch of clowns who traffic toxic waste to kids," or else Thompson would "be telling the nation about Mr. Springsteen's tacit approval" of the song, which, according to Campbell, "expresses anger about the failure of the First Amendment to protect 2 Live Crew from prosecution." Thompson also said, "the 'social commentary' on this album is akin to a sociopath's discharging his AK-47 into a crowded schoolyard, with the machine gun bursts interrupted by Pee Wee Herman's views on politics."
Want more of his idiocy? Jack Thompson page on wikiquote (http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Jack_Thompson_(attorney)).
The man is not well.
And sadly, is bringing his diseased delusions upon the rest of the decision-making public.

My lovely state of Florida demanded that he [Jack Thompson] suspend his law practices for a while and take a psychology test.
He is one sad sad man whos kids probably hate him because he wont let them have any video game, and his wife probably hates him because he is unskilled in the sack. He has this horrible influence on how politics handles video gaming and other media as stated above. If people could make their OWN decisions it would severely limit Jack's power over the brainwashed masses.

Don't forget this was full on BANNED in our country, not your "technically not banned but Sony and Ninty won't touch it" AO. Gaming is seen as detrimental - they said the same about rock and roll 50 years ago, and 20 years ago with film. The time will pass, eventually.
