View Full Version : CMD Rants on Super Mario 3

So...me and my gf dug out her old Super Nintendo. We bought Super MArio All Stars (1,2,3 and lost levels) off friends of hers.

And I sat down, and we threw down some Super Mario 3.

And now my self esteem in my gaming abilities has plummeted.

I can play expert guitar. I can shoot the head off a terrorist with a pistol, while rappelling down the side of a building. I can beat hookers and steal there money. I can cruise through Paradise city, smashing opponents cars into trailer trucks at whim.

But I cant use two friggin buttons, and get past the flying pirate ship with the ridiculous cannons all over the place (Seriously. Who puts cannons on there ships pointing every which way, Koopas designers are ******ed.)

My inner 9 yr old anguish is coming back to me all over again.

lol i've noticed that in the past too when i would try to play old games like that... i think its just that we are just used to the newer stuff and arent in the right frame of mind like we were in the past... *shrugs* just a thought ..lol

Maybe your right.

I just want to make a quick shout out to that giant friggin fish on level 3.3 I think it is, that gobbles me up all the goddamn time cause I fail and fall into the water.

Im going to order the biggest order of Fish and Chips imaginable this weekend, and think of you with every ketchup and lemon covered bite I take, you no good mutha *bleep*

I know what you mean exactly, I tried SMB3 on the Nintendo DS (Gameboy cartridge) because I wanted to help my son through some levels, and goddamn!! it was a lot tougher than I remember, of course the control scheme is a lot harder than the new mario games (New Super Mario Bros. for example). Another thing I was a lot more hardcore back then, and I played any game until I mastered it, no matter how many hours it took. Still I think with some practice you'll regain your old skills.:)

I can relate.

I went back to play Kid Icarus again the other day on my old NES. That game is INSANELY HARD!!!

I don't know how I beat it when I was a kid.

And does anyone remember in the original Metroid how there were those rooms that you fall into and get stuck? It would take you an hour to get back out.

Shoot box above you, jump so box reappears underneath you while shooting the next box up, jump up again, shoot next box, box reappears INSIDE you, knocking you back down to the bottom again, repeat.

And thus you enter some of the hardest stages in gaming history.

Seriously.

SMB3 was HARD.

Back in a time where more games were hard (either because it was made badly, or it was made Good)

heh, yeah, I remember that was about as far as I could get in the game without using continues or flutes.

I don't know, I think I actually do better when I replay old games from my childhood. Of course, I was only 8 back when I had a working regular nintendo, so that might have something to do with it. I actually remember having to stick my brother's drumstick in the nintendo to make the cartridge stay down. Ahhh, those were the days....

AHHH!!! you just gave me a terrible flashback!!

You know I also tried Classic Metroid on the Gameboy SP to try and finish it again, thinking I was all badass! man did I get a reality check!! :D

I still have the insanely detailed map that I made of Metroid when I was a kid.

It has the location of all the energy tanks, missiles, weapons and those trick rooms you get stuck in. I used it to blaze through Metroid recently. Piece of cake.

But the hardest game by far has to be Ghosts 'n Goblins. I swear that game was made by satan himself.

lmfao...this is one of the greatest threads EVER!

I used to be able to just make it into the second world, and then I would undoubtedly die.

I did love the flying hat though. That was pretty sweet.

To this day I have still never beaten Mario 64...though I heard you went through all that trouble for a piece of cake. It's probably better that I never beat it in retrospect, or I probably would have broken the N64 into a million pieces.

The worst thing about that game is even if you spent all day getting up to the last guy, if you, god forbid, didn't have that shield weapon, you had to go back like 2 levels or something. Especially since that shield weapon has such short range, so it sucked trying to beat the level with it.

Utterly pointless.

I always used to die on the sky levels of SMB3. I was heartened recently to discover that I still hate those forced moving platforms.

I remember beating that game in three days when I was young. Three months on the VC, and I still haven't found time to get through the plant world.

I actually like Zelda 2, although I never played it when I was younger. I don't know, I just kinda have a thing for RPGs, and Zelda 2 felt more RPGish than the other ones. It is true that it didn't really feel like Zelda, and it was stupidly difficult.

It is really interesting that a lot of the second games from the NES era were very different from the originals. Zelda 2, Mario 2, Castlevania 2, Final Fantasy 2, Fire Emblem 2... probably more that I can't think of now.

This is something I argued pointlessly with a kid on the bus once. He said that newer games are the best because they are harder. I do not know about this, aside from a few games here and there, all of todays games are very beatable, Madden is a great example, I never lose against the AI, bring on Tecmo Super Bowl, its usually a close one every game

I can beat most of todays games in a few hours first time through (Ghost Recon) where like the first time I beat Super Metroid it took 33 hours.

Older games are always harder (at least for me) and usually more fun, but also more aggrevating, where newer games, no matter how hard it might get, usually doesnt get nearly as hard as older games

plus the fact that some older games had like 100 levels or never ended
(Bugs Bunny had 100 levels) Sky Shark never ended, I think Ice Climber had like 70 levels

Shredder87
04-16-2008, 02:22 AM
I think knowing that you can save now gives you that sense of security, as before you would sh** bricks if you're close to dying since you don't have any more lives to spend, hence new games feel easier.

Sarge51
04-16-2008, 06:12 AM
I'm no more or less of a failure at that game than I used to be. :P

HMXDungHeaver
04-16-2008, 08:20 AM
I think games were definitely harder back then. The save feature alone accounts for a lot of it.

If you couldn't save some of today's games, they would be MUCH more difficult.

LZ_69
04-16-2008, 10:22 AM
I think games are easier now a days, becuase developers a more preocupied about making the story good, we have seen plently of video games in recent years with mind blowing stories, sometimes even better than movies.

Back in the days of Mario, the story just involved Bowser kidnapping the princess, we didn't know why exactly and we didn't care, all we knew is that we had to go through 8 castles to save her. I'm not saying that there where no exceptions to great stories back then, all I'm saying is that due to obvious limitations in the 8bit or 16bit era developers didn't have enough room for a gripping story, outstanding voice acting or great scores, so do they just did what they did best, make a challenging game.

Blowing into the cartridges like everyone else. I didn't know the "secret" of cleaning the contacts back when I was 11.

When I got into collecting classic NES games a few years ago I went back and cleaned everything. Now my original NES console, which I lovingly named Blinky, works like a charm every time.

Great thread!

I actually keep my NES out with my entertainment center... as I sometimes just have a craving for Tetris. :) I'm usually surprised that I can still score over 700k points...

For me, the hardest game was Gauntlet. I must have gotten to Room 94 a couple hundred times before finally advancing to Room 97... then dying and having to redo Room 94 again. Ugh. I can't even remember if I ever actually got to Room 100 to beat the game...

He said that newer games are the best because they are harder. I do not know about this, aside from a few games here and there, all of todays games are very beatable

plus the fact that some older games had like 100 levels or never ended
(Bugs Bunny had 100 levels) Sky Shark never ended, I think Ice Climber had like 70 levels

There was a PS1 game named "One" it was only five level's, five of the hardest level's i ever played, in fact i still haven't beaten the last level on that game. Another hard game for me beside's Kid Icarus was Ninja Gaiden 3.

I think games were definitely harder back then. The save feature alone accounts for a lot of it.

If you couldn't save some of today's games, they would be MUCH more difficult.

And now you also have checkpoint's instead of "OH MY ****ING GOD BACK TO THE BEGINNING AGAIN?

I'd have to say that saving & checkpoints don't make the games any "easier", per se, but they definitely save you A LOT of time in the grand scheme...

Probably why some people can beat games within a few days whereas "back in the day" it often took weeks (or longer) to beat a game... all those damn restarts!

So, it's "easier to PLAY a game" but it's not necessarily "easier to BEAT a game"...

Imagine having to play the Solo Career (or even the BWT career) without saving or checkpoints? If you fail out one song, anywhere in the mix, you're back to square one...

I don't think it would make Rock Band "harder", but it sure would piss a lot of us off because of all the time it would take to reach the end!

Wow, this thread is really making me want to bust out the NES (or at least some sort of emulator) to play SMB3. Great game, I haven't played it in a while but I'm probably around as good as I was back in the day - I play the NES Castlevania games regularly (and beat 2 of them recently), so my old-school platforming skills are still pretty good.

I never got around to beating SMB3 though since I never had the time to get through all of the levels and I could never get past the Dark World, so I'll probably have to look into beating it in the future.

I think a lot of the difficulty with old games versus new games stems from the fact that not many new games operate on the whole continues/lives system of old games and there's less plunges to the death. It could also have something to do with new games being in 3D and the controls not being as tight as they were in 2D games - adding the 3rd dimension in drastically changes player movement and so on, so that could be part of it.

Oh, and I've also played Kid Icarus but I've never beat that either. The Eggplant Wizard is the stuff of nightmares. And speaking of hard games, has anyone here beat Battletoads or Ninja Gaiden 3?

LOL, Battletoads. I actually beat it after they brought it over to the sega genesis, and I just figured that I was older so I was able to beat it easier. Was the NES version harder? I don't remember, except that it was a total pain.

Like I mentioned is one of my first posts in this thread, back in the day I was pretty hardcore, If beating a game meant no spleep or even food and water? SO BE IT!! Also all through Jr. High and the first years of High school, me and my friends held a contest of who could beat the most games, we kept a pretty decent (and long list) of conquered games. I wish I still had it, I can't remember half of them now.:o

It's been said already...but this is a kick ass thread. Zelda, Metroid, Kid Icarus, Rygar...all bring a tear to my eye. Super Mario I could do without. Enjoyable yes, but the games mentioned above were what Nintendo was about to me. Hours, days, hell...even months of my life were dedicated to the domination of these titiles. Kid Icarus was the first title I purchased and holds a place dear in my heart. Killing Medusa was my first taste of a video game-gasm!

Well the system came with this game
http://i26.tinypic.com/2059hr4.jpg

And this is the full R.O.B set up
http://i28.tinypic.com/1ibl12.jpg

What the game was about is that there was this little dude, that you had to help through some levels which looked like this
http://i32.tinypic.com/fc5koy.png

So you moved him around until he reached a red or blue column which could be moved with ROB, so what you did is press select and the screen would go green and then you press the directional pad and the game would send a signal to ROB to move in that direction(on movement at a time), so he would pick up these "gyros" which he would then put in a gyro spiner, pick them up again and put them in either the blue or red trays, which in return would press the A or B button which would lower the column.....*sighs* it was a stupid and long process in which you most likely would get killed every time.

Word...my mom used to slay that game. She was the one who made it to the last level...I only got as far as the graveyard. Freaking Nintendo dying, grrr.

It on the nintendo8 site, and I have it bookmarked. Maybe one day I'll get around to beating it, but it would be next to impossible because you can't save on that site.

I had the sweet orange Zapper. As a kid, I used to put it against the TV and shoot the ducks that way.

For anyone who's jonesing to play some old NES games, here's a sick setup that I have going that really amplifies the experience. (Some parts are optional, but this is what I have)

What you'll need:

Computer
S-Video Cord
Audio Cord (or you can run the sound through your computer speakers)
NES Roms and Emulator
XBOX 360 Controller
XBOX 360 Controller USB Receiver (For Computer) (http://www.xbox.com/en-US/hardware/x/xbox360wirelessgamingreceiver/)

- Once you have everything, you set up the computer so that it displays through your television set using the S-Video Cord (and Audio cord if you want sound through the TV)

- Install the XBOX 360 driver in your computer so that it will recognize the controller.

- Change the Inputs for your Emulator so that it registers them from the XBOX Controller. I usually have the 360 'A' as the NES 'B' and the 360 'B' as the NES 'A' because they're reversed. Start/Select and DPad are obvious. (I actually mapped the joystick to the dpad and it works greatly).

After that you just fire up whatever game you want and you get to play it on your TV, wirelessly!!!!

EDIT: I'm also going to post this as it's own thread for those who don't check this one.

You most certainly are not. My single most hated thing about Nintendo was how they messed with games when bringing them to the US back in the day... I mean come on, if it weren't for them we wouldn't still have people running around referring to FF6 as "FF3".

And taking a completely unrelated game, slapping Mario in it, and calling it "Mario 2" was totally cheesy. Seriously, that's low.
