View Full Version : Little things that Harmonix needs to fix...

I'm sure threads have already been done on the big, important things to fix, but I felt like creating a short list of the smaller ones, just a few things that bug me, that could all probably be fixed with little to no effort.
1. Not having a multiplier in practice mode.
2. No (Good) practice mode for vocalists.
3. The DLC needs a way to be sorted in solo mode.
4. We need to be able to use whatever hairstyle we want with hats.
5. no combo counter, no "individual breakdown" after songs (seriously, are you just purposely talking features out so you can be different from GH?
6. You should be able to customize transparency on the fretboard, along with color (maybe)
7. No way to tell if you've really 100%'d a song
8. You should be able to see your bands logo on other places then just the drums
9. The menu songs loop over once they've played through their preview. They should make it so that it starts playing a different song afterwards.
10. You should be able to retry a song right after you've played it.
11. Lastly, we need the option to change what the whammy effect looks like. The whole DNA type things looks cool when held all the way down, but it just looks sloppy when the whammy bar is moving around.

1. Not having a multiplier in practice mode.
meh
2. No (Good) practice mode for vocalists.
this seems like the only good idea on this list
3. The DLC needs a way to be alphabetized in solo mode.
meh
4. We need to be able to use whatever hairstyle we want with hats.
nitpicking
5. no combo counter, no "individual breakdown" after songs (seriously, are you just purposely talking features out so you can be different from GH?
maybe
6. You should be able to customize transparency on the fretboard, along with color (maybe)
no
7. No way to tell if you've really 100%'d a song
that is BY FAR the most stupid thing i've ever seen... you complain about no individual breakdown then you want to make it so you wouldn't know if you 100%'d something?
8. You should be able to see your bands logo on other places then just the drums
ok im going to stop none of these are actually "good ideas" outside of #2

By number 7 he means there is currently no way to tell if you've 100%'d a song when you're scrolling your list.

Actually, transparancy would help. I'd like to make mine more solid. Sometimes a characters arm or something will go under my fretboard and it'll be a blob of color distracting me.

If this is all you have to complain about.....then you're a moron. Rock Band is 99% perfect, and if this is all you can come up with you blow at life.
Why are people so aggressive towards people on this forum? It's one of the worst I've seen online. There really needs to be some kind of moderation to cut down on the personal attacks imo.

I'm not oversheltered, I have seen worse before but not recently. I've found the places I go more recently to be a lot more mature. I thought that perhaps it was the internet which had grown up, but now I realise that there are a lot of immature and rude people still out there who feel the need to post idioticly to forums. Actually, it's not often even the youngest posters who are the immature ones.

I'd like to see better stats after a song. It was always nice to know where in a song you were messing up, know how many of your sp phrases were hit , etc. I would also like a visual % on the song list in addition to the stars.

04-16-2008, 10:27 AM
Like chill said,
A more detailed breakdown of the song would be nice and fun to see. Also, a better practice mode for vocals is a valid point.
I think the rest of the points is more just personal wants in the game. They don't really help much, but may be fun to see. More of a wish list than a true recommendation except the two points I mentioned earlier.

All of the OP's ideas are pretty solid. Especially the 100% marker. Gold Stars are great and all, but many of them weren't FCs. I'd like to be able to look at a song on my tour and know if I FCd it.
Also, people are jerks on the internet, and they justify it by saying, "Hey, it's the internet, who cares?". These are the people who live here. The internet is their home because no one can stand to be around them in reality. Sad, but true.:(

LOL Internet.
Anyways, what I think that needs a little update, is that you could save in the middle of Endless Setlist. It's 5 hours, and no one wants to come over to my house just to play Rock Band for 5 hours straight -_-

More durable instruments!
I know they've come out with newer ones since the original peripherals, but the new ones still seem to break regularly.
I thought I was responsible with my bass pedal, but now it has a hairline crack on either side and I can feel it getting too flexible in the middle. :(
It's only a matter of time before... *SNAP!*

5. no combo counter, no "individual breakdown" after songs (seriously, are you just purposely talking features out so you can be different from GH?
I disagree on the combo counter, I found it, at best, to be useless and distracting in GH3.
I have a feeling that a good part of the reason the song breakdowns were removed is exactly what you said, though. I think there is an IP issue with this game, and Harmonix needs to step carefully when creating Rock Band. I believe that if they make the software too similar to Guitar Hero, it could be infringing on the GH IP. So I assume that's why they've made some changes to the Guitar Hero formula. They can get away with using the same basic gameplay, as that's covered under Harmonix's own patents, but I don't think they would be wise to try to replicate everything about Guitar Hero in this game.
You should add Quick Sorting to your list though, as it's in the store, but not even in the game. The normal sorting in the game is becoming more and more inefficient.

3. The DLC needs a way to be alphabetized in solo mode.
-- it is already alphabetized in solo mode, but the same sort options as in quickplay would be great.
5. no combo counter, no "individual breakdown" after songs (seriously, are you just purposely talking features out so you can be different from GH?
-- I agree completely with this. the "individual breakdown" was useful if I wanted to practice specific areas of songs. Now it's a bit (not a lot, but still annoyance) harder.
7. No way to tell if you've really 100%'d a song
-- seems like an easy fix, I'll agree with this
I'll add one of my own peeves:
I want to be able to retry a song after I've passed it in the solo tour. I can replay in quickplay, why not solo tour?

You can. You can replay any song at any point in Solo Tour. Just because it has a score doesn't mean it can't be replayed. I do it all the time, going back to improve my scores, trying to 5 star everything, etc.

1. Not having a multiplier in practice mode. Yes!
2. No (Good) practice mode for vocalists. Yes!
3. The DLC needs a way to be sorted in solo mode. Solo mode is a dinosaur. Let it rot.
4. We need to be able to use whatever hairstyle we want with hats. Lot of work.
5. no combo counter, no "individual breakdown" after songs (seriously, are you just purposely talking features out so you can be different from GH? It's called "refocusing on fun instead of score."
6. You should be able to customize transparency on the fretboard, along with color (maybe) Kinda PC-esque but why not. Sometimes reading it is hard.
7. No way to tell if you've really 100%'d a song Who cares? It's gold stars or bust.
8. You should be able to see your bands logo on other places then just the drums Yeah it could get some use in loading screens and maybe displayed in some venues.
9. The menu songs loop over once they've played through their preview. They should make it so that it starts playing a different song afterwards. They do?
10. You should be able to retry a song right after you've played it. You can?
11. Lastly, we need the option to change what the whammy effect looks like. The whole DNA type things looks cool when held all the way down, but it just looks sloppy when the whammy bar is moving around. What? Now you're being silly.

Little things I'd want fixed:
1. Change hairstyles without changing hat.
2. More microphones
3. Bass solo tour.
4. Online BWT or single player BWT
5. An actual Vocal practice function. I mean come on, they really gyped us there.

it would be good because it would let you know how much better youre getting at a certain part in a song, like if youre having trouble with a certain part, so you want to see how much better youre getting at it

I agree with the hat comment. I think hats should be treated as an accessory option, so you can put it on your character no matter their hair style. It also opens up space for more hat options.

I hate having to scroll up just to replay.

It's easy enough, but if I'm in quickplay I can replay a song as many times as I like before submitting a score. Can't do that in solo tour? That's strange.

1. Not having a multiplier in practice mode.
Would be nice to have a better way of telling when you missed a note, yeah.

In solo tour, yes. This is the only thing I would say needs "fixing".
5. no combo counter, no "individual breakdown" after songs (seriously, are you just purposely talking features out so you can be different from GH?
"More stats" would get messy with 4 players. Should be there for solo tour and quickplay, though. Don't need combo counter with more stats back, it would tell you how you did on individual sections without putting more stuff on the gameplay screen.
6. You should be able to customize transparency on the fretboard, along with color (maybe)
It would be cool to be able to put art on it.
7. No way to tell if you've really 100%'d a song
They need silver stars!

LITTLE THINGS REDTSUNAMI NEEDS TO FIX
1. Not having a multiplier in practice mode.
There is no score in practice mode, so why would you want a multiplier?
2. No (Good) practice mode for vocalists.
I'd like to sing a certain section, but slowing down the tempo wouldn't help. Practice mode is a nothing feature anyway. Only good way to practice is to play.
3. The DLC needs a way to be sorted in solo mode.
The DLC menu not doing it for you? In solo quickplay the DLC is sorted with the other songs. Non-issue.
4. We need to be able to use whatever hairstyle we want with hats.
LOL
5. no combo counter, no "individual breakdown" after songs (seriously, are you just purposely talking features out so you can be different from GH?
Rock Band isn't Guitar Hero.
6. You should be able to customize transparency on the fretboard, along with color (maybe)
Are you talking about the note chart or the actual fretboard of the in-game guitar? The former, yeah, that would be nice. The latter = LOL.
7. No way to tell if you've really 100%'d a song
What does this even mean? I know I can tell if i got 100%...
8. You should be able to see your bands logo on other places then just the drums
This would be nice instead of just the band name on the stage backdrop.
9. The menu songs loop over once they've played through their preview. They should make it so that it starts playing a different song afterwards.
Who is on the menu screen long enough to even care about this?
10. You should be able to retry a song right after you've played it.
...
11. Lastly, we need the option to change what the whammy effect looks like. The whole DNA type things looks cool when held all the way down, but it just looks sloppy when the whammy bar is moving around.
While we are at it, I dont like the way the logos appear on the screen, the way the notes shatter when you hit them, the way the highlighten options flicker when I press confirm, and the font the song titles are in....

Few things:
1) I think it's a valuable tool having the multiplier (or some sort of streak indicator). You can 100% in practice with overstrums/strikes. The counter tells you if you break streak.
2) Practice mode for vocals definitely needs you to pick sections to work on if you want - I do agree tempo changes are useless. When I failed the talky in NIN I went to vocals practice for the first time. I couldn't believe I had to sing the whole song - what's the point, I may as well use career mode and fail out.
3) I do think the song list will need better sorting in the future. Eventually the lists will be so long they'll be unmanagable. Probably something like an iPOD interface would work nicely.
4) 100% a song, and FC a song are 2 different things. When it says 100% flawless - that's not necessarily the case.
5) The ability to replay a song in career would be great. If you're working on a song in particular it's a pain to go through all the steps just to replay.
Peace,
Ian

A detailed breakdown to help you learn would be awesome... for practice mode. Since that's what practice mode is for right, learning to be better? Maybe you could save the results to the hard drive for later viewing in a review module, but not this "omg I have to see my stats" after every single song when in group play... guh.

1. Not having a multiplier in practice mode.
I don't know if it should be a multiplier, since that's fairly pointless for practice... But some way to very clearly tell if you break streak yes.
2. No (Good) practice mode for vocalists.
I've never used that before, since I've started with the other instruments, so I went to try. Oh god yes that's needed.
3. The DLC needs a way to be sorted in solo mode.
Not a big problem now - but it certainly will be soon.
4. We need to be able to use whatever hairstyle we want with hats.
6. You should be able to customize transparency on the fretboard, along with color (maybe)
8. You should be able to see your bands logo on other places then just the drums
9. The menu songs loop over once they've played through their preview. They should make it so that it starts playing a different song afterwards.
11. Lastly, we need the option to change what the whammy effect looks like. The whole DNA type things looks cool when held all the way down, but it just looks sloppy when the whammy bar is moving around.
These are all kind of meh... Nice, but very, very minor. I'd love more mics, more instruments in general, and more customization options with the art maker. But that's really minor things compared to the rest of your list.
5. no combo counter, no "individual breakdown" after songs (seriously, are you just purposely talking features out so you can be different from GH?
This is the most important thing on your list to me. I was frankly shocked to see the complete and total lack of stats when I first played RB. And those that claim it has anything to do with "fun" or "playing vs. gaming" are just blowing smoke out their... well exitholes :p
Stats help you focus on parts of songs you have difficulty with, so you can go straight to practice and practice those parts. Also most importantly they provide great fun to check with your friends - at least they always have for me. Comments and banter would fly about which parts were hard, easy or where we did particularly good. I so totally miss that in RB.
They can keep the current layout for the end of a song, and add the ability to press a button/fret/drum to get more detailed statistics. Of course only for yourself (or if playing multiplayer locally those involved). If it'd get too complicated with several players stats on the screen there could just be a way to move through the pages for each (local) player one by one.
Sadly I fear that the reasoning is exactly as you guessed, and it's a way to make themselves different from GH - either for legal reasons or pride. Both of which means that it's unlikely to be changed. Sad.
7. No way to tell if you've really 100%'d a song
This one... Well. Basically I find it more interesting to have a visual indication of having got 100% than of getting 1.5 times what's needed for 5 stars (as is the req for gold stars I believe), so what I really think is that this change was a mistake, but it was probably done for the same reason as the stats. But yes a clear visual indication on the songlist would be nice - perhaps golden glittering, or just a red box around the stars would make me happy :p
10. You should be able to retry a song right after you've played it.
Yes.
