Well. I've decided tomorrow I'm officially quitting cigs. You guys care to list what you used to help you quit? i'm not talking medication because i cannot afford that at this point, so I'm quitting cold turkey. I know some people have used straws, some use jolly ranchers, some use bubble gum. What did you use?

I never smoked myself, but I know people who have quit, (and I think it's great that you want to.) One thing you may have to do for a while is distance yourself from other smokers.

When my sister tried quitting her smoker friends weren't any help (some tried to talk her out of it) and just the fact that they were doing it, and could offer her a ciggarette if she asked for it, was temptation she didn't need.

If their supportive though, they'll probably understand if you don't want them to smoke around you. Even better is getting someone to quit with you. My aunt had to quit for health reasons, so she and my sister quit together, and that's how they both finally broke the habit.

Well my roommate smokes, so i think i'm going to request he smoke outside and not give me one if i ask, and to keep them locked up while he sleeps (i'm awake when he sleeps, i work nights).

And thanks for the support guys, I really appreciate it. I'm just tired of wasting money on antibiotics because of the fact I keep getting lung and sinus infections. This last infection over this weekend was the last straw. I've tried to quit previously, but that was becuase my then husband kept pushing me along with my parents but *I* did not want to quit, and that's why I failed. But now, I have no doubt in my mind i want to quit and quit for good. I wont quit the green though ;)

Thats awesome. Im sort of a health guy, and if you wanna start cleansing your body of all the toxins that smoking has put in there, then green tea is the way to go.

Hey, good luck!! I've tried to quit a few times over the past year, but my wife smokes even more than I do, and it's a tough one. You've got our support, of course! :D

I used to work with a crazy (yet competent) Chinese doctor. When another of my co-workers who smokes asked about the best method of quitting, the doc recommended inducing an initial bout of diarrhea, followed by two weeks of regular exercise.

According to him, the sweating of exercise plus pooping would purge the body of the toxins associated with smoking, making the physical withdrawal symptoms much less severe.

Sorry for the grossness of that description, but that's how it was described to me. Maybe it would be worthwhile to research the various medical sites on the web about what they recommend or else consult a real physician.

Yeah I have read that as well, atleast the exercise portion. I think I'm just gonna exchange my addition to cigs with an addition to sex, then I get exercise and enjoyment. :P

Hmm, how does a cold turkey help you quit smoking? If anyone can explain this I would like to try it as well.

Chocolate helps for some reason. *not the crappy kind like Hershey's though* But real chocolate - as in the raw beans, if you can find them. You can find them on line if you wanna go that route. Just chew them when you have a craving. It kills it for some reason.

It worked for me. I quit and never looked back. And I was either rolling my own or smoking Camel non-filters. Also - keep in mind that the first 3 days are the hardest part. After that, you're basically in the clear.

Drink lots of herbal tea too. :D

Hmm, how does a cold turkey help you quit smoking? If anyone can explain this I would like to try it as well.

Well, have you heard the whole thing about eating turkey makes you drowsy? Well, that's because turkey contains an amino acid called L-Tryptophan, which is a natural sedative. The sedative properties of L-Tryptophan help fight the urges associated with nicotine withdrawals.

The fact the turkey is cold is because the sedative properties of L-Tryptophan are enhanced when the turkey is consumed at a temperature less than 50 degrees fahrenheit.

[Edit: I guess what I'm trying to say is... it's best to quit smoking the day after Thanksgiving.]

Have you tried anything yet?

Just wondering what you know may work and won't.

I know it's hard. And I'm a kid. My will power sucks.

I am totally cheering you on!

Oh and the gummy bears. Seriously works. So does sex actually but depending on who you are that may more expensive.

Oh wait you're a girl.

So no problems.

GOOD LUCK KICKING THE HABIT!

I've tried one other time, I was on Xyban (or Zyban or something).. but I didnt have the WANT to quit, so that's why it didnt work. I was being forced to quit by my then-husband. I'm wanting to quit for myself now. I'm skurred though! I dont want to fail, I'm not that kind of person.

oh, i think since I get paid today, before I go to work, I'm gonna go to the store, get a bag of gummy bears, gum, straws, and jolly ranchers and bring it all to work. LOL.

I smoked in highschool, after high school, into the military. Then I saw how it was effecting my wife, and her breathing and I quit cold turkey to help her quit.

The key, more than anything else, you have to be able to see yourself never touching a cigarette again. For me smoking was apart of my style. I was an 80's rocker and thought allong w the leather jacket, tons of jewlery, bandennas and long hair, you had smokes.

I grew up, and realized smoking was a crutch to a strong individual self, and a black hole for health, money, friends, and scent.

Once I saw myself as a person who would never touch cigarettes again, once I saw that it was not apart of my identity, quitting was really easy.

I even still hung out with my smoking friends, went to clubs, drank, etc...never relapsed. It's all about your will and your residual self image.

Good luck, it will be years before you get back to a pre-smoking health, but it is worth it.

The trick is to know that cigarettes aren't actually addictive, that's how i quit every time.

lol

But yeah, I used to smoke like 2 packs a week (so not a lot) then I kinda just stopped. Had the occasion one now and then throughout the year, and of course this week while i was working as a carnie :D

So, if I read this correctly, in order for me to quit smoking, I have to

Eat a cold turkey then go to sleep
Poop alot but it has to be diarrhea
Sweat alot
Have more sex

I'll take #4 for $500 Alex.

Good luck Daesania. Hope you break free of them.

I'm curious, because in none of your posts have you mentioned how long have you been smoking or how much, that's a big factor. I smoked for like 7 years and then one day I quit just like that!! I have been smoke free for 12 years now. I guess you can say it was will power...that doesn't help much huh??:o

All I can say is that if you truly feel that you are ready to quit than you will if you are just contemplating the idea you are in for a long haul...

Good luck!! :)

Why not start now, if you were going to quit, just do it! Don't wait.

Well my roommate smokes, so i think i'm going to request he smoke outside and not give me one if i ask.

I wont quit the green though ;)

That is a good idea, even still it will be hard. And the cigs and green go hand in hand. If you're gonna smoke one, you're gonna smoke the other.

Well this is a fair warning that if i am cranky and generally a *****, then just mark it as me quitting smoking, yeah that's it ;)

So this is why you've went on a Tool rant. ;)

Quitting smoking is not as hard as one may think. The problem is, do you find yourself surrounded in environments which expose you to that type of thing. If you can get past the first few days, then you got it licked. But being around people that smoke and participating in activities, such as the dope smoke, increase your chances of an unsuccessfull attempt at quitting. Good luck!

I've tried several times and always find myself going back to it. :(

I've been smoking for about 4 or 5 years. Its been 8 hours so far since my last cig. So far so good, I havent missed it yet, no nic fits, no reaching for the cigs, nothing! :)

I think I'll be ok to smoke the green, IB, I know plenty of people who smoke green but not cigs.. so it'll just be a test really :)

For me it was the initial 48 hours. After that I was actually pretty cool. Took some nice long naps after the urge was gone just to relax and I was fine.

For a friend of mine though it was a week and some naps. It varies but naps help. It's hard for me to nap but just chill. It's hard but possible!

Its really tempting right now, i'm at work and i have...errr had a smoke every 2 hours, so now its just a matter of not looking forward to smoke breaks. I've got gum, straws, jolly ranchers and green tea with me here at work, got a bit of a command post set up. ROFL.
