View Full Version : Hand positions on the drumset?

A quick question about the the drum peripheral in this game. Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I can tell, the third pad from the left is going to used for the hi-hat. Will it be possible to change it so that the hi-hat is placed on the leftmost pad, for people who prefer to play in a '10 o'clock-2 o'clock' position (i.e. hands crossed)?

How would that even work? Aren't all the pads basically level with each other? If I played my hi-hat without it being raised with my snare on my set, then my arms would keep hitting each other. It works great on a real set, but I don't think it'll work with this game.

Time to whip out the dremel and epoxy... you can make it work if you really want to ;) I imagine it would make it much more difficult to follow though, if your drums were in a different order than those on the screen. (Obviously you'd rather have the software option of doing it, so that the notes were changed there as well ;) )

I've seen some pretty creative paint jobs and custom mods for guitar controllers for the Guitar Hero series.
With the combined ingenuity and creativity of Rock Band fans, I expect to see some pretty killer setups. (drum sets, mic and stand, and even whole stage outfits)

Definitely... I suspect we'll see a full drum kit conversion into a RB controller quite soon after launch.
It would be pretty awesome to see a whole band of people with real instruments modded into RB controllers... I wonder how many people would be fooled if they played in public.
Expert mode does keep your hands flying rather convinsingly fast.... although now that the songs are mostly masters, people might suspect something, unless you convinced them you were the greatest cover band ever ;)

short answer: no. not unless your right forearm looked like this:

They said you can remove the pads from the kit and play on your knees if you want. So I'm sure it's possible. But I think it's going to be massively difficult to play because the order on the game is still going to be R-Y-O-B

While I can only guess, I'm assuming that the pad sensors do not measure how hard they are hit, only "if they are hit" at all. Knowing that, it should take very little work to gut the pads of their electronics and rig them up any way you like it! Seems to me that you could set it up like your home kit if you just sawed the pads apart and mounted them on their own adjustable stands. There can't be more than 2 wires going to each pad and you could easily extend those...

It's not the pads themselves, but the whole drum pad assembly. For table-top play. All four pads are going to remove as one unit.
When I go to the tour next thurs, imma take a look at the kit, and see what the options are for hacking it apart. I'll sneak some up-close photos too, if the MTV grunts allow it. :D

Ok, thanks.
Also, just to clear up any confusion, I'm talking about a means of doing it through software. I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to include that option in the game. Guess I'll just have to get used to this particular set-up, though.

There's a lefty flip, but I highly doubt they're going to provide a software option for this. They flipped the hi-hat/snare for a reason: so people didn't have to cross over with equal height pads. They're really not going to give the option to flip it back just for the few hackers who flip their pads...

For those of you who know what I mean by this...
...crayons.

It would seem so simple to have the pads be adustable to different heights. You can take the pads off, why not have a bar that raises a certain pad so many inches or whatever? I don't think it could be that hard, and would even fix lefty flip for those cross over that way.
I would be a sad panda if I were unable to crossover while drumming.

Well not only adjust it's hight, but it's angle. I mean we all know how easy it is to hit a hi-hat thats a straight angle when we're sitting below it.

I dunno, I know the guys at HMX are all musicians so I would think they designed the drum kit like this for a reason. It seems to me though that the hi-hat might be the most played drum component so it might be a little weird for righties to be able to play that many notes with their weaker left but I guess we'll have to wait and see....

Which is why you would cross your hands. ;)
Anyway, it seems to me that it wouldn't be too hard to implement this feature. But if the pads are all completely level, I guess that renders it a moot point. Still, they don't seem completely level, at least judging by the 'kit design that we've seen so far.
