I've got a short list of favorite band names, but they all tend to be longer nonsensical names. Case in point, The Tony Danza Tap Dance Extravaganza.
What are your favorite band names, and why? I love The Ramones as a band names because it created this weird gang image when they all took Ramone as their last name, but it also paid homage to their pop rock roots (Paul McCartney occasionally used Paul Ramon as an alias when staying at hotels to avoid fans).
Your favorite band names don't even have to be your favorite bands. They don't have to be big bands either, they could be a local group, some bar band you saw once, or a band you started with your friends. Heck, it could even be your Rock Band band. You just have to like the name. Let me hear 'em!

there's
John Cougar Concentration Camp
His Hero Is Gone
Confederate *** (It's a pro *** band with tons of sarcasm)
Guyana Punch Line
Infest, to the point and brutal like they were
Union of Uranus
some bands from the 90's that i grew up to
Maelphaedor

Five Finger Death Punch
Killswitch Engage
They both kinda make you scratch your head and wonder what the hell spawned the conversation that brainstormed up those names. Like from the Some Kind of Monster movie, when they 1st hit upon the phrase "some kind of monster", you knew it was getting used somewhere, it just resonated too well at the moment.

XTC (before the internet days -- abbreviations hit rock 'n' roll)
Cream (a little pretentious but very apt)
Jimi Hendrix Experience (is there a more descriptive name?)
The Who (so many great plays on the name possible)
INXS (altho' I always thought it should just have been NXS)
Buffalo Springfield (who knew or knows what it meant, just sounded great)
Quicksilver Messenger Service
I tend not to go for silly names, altho' I was once in a band called "Pope Paul's Ragtime Rhythm Band" I can't take credit for the name, tho'.

X-Ray Spex (One of the few instances where an intentional misspelling actually enhances the band name.)
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Butthole Surfers (Good call on this one, Sayburr! Definently high on the 'WTF?' list.)
Black Sabbath (The name is a perfect summary of the band's sound.)
My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult
Throbbing Gristle (Another name that compliments the band's sound to the letter.)
The Flaming Lips
Death (Simple and straight to the point.)
The Velvet Underground ('Velvet' meaning sultry and taboo, and 'Underground' meaning so unknown "only one hundred records" where sold during the band's tenure. Not that this has changed much since they broke up. :D)
The Damned
They Might Be Giants
Maylene And The Sons of Disaster (I love how they took the Southern legend - well, mostly legend - as a band name.)
I also second HMXHenry's call on The Ramones. Their shared monikers and uniform image (leather jackets, jeans, Chuck's) adds an interesting dimension to an already amazing band.

I like The Kinks, The Fall and The Who. They prove that a defenine article can make a bad name great. Black Sabbath is another. ? and The Mysterians is just plain brilliant. Fear is one because it's sounds cool.

Rush(It fits the band well)
King Crimson(Cool name)
Yes(Fun band to talk about with a friend who doesn't know the band. :) )
Cygnus Eye(I like the name and I find the eye with the bobby pin emblem to be funny. This would be one of the two Rock Band bands I formed.)
Anthrax(Cool name once again)
I edit the list when I can think of some more names I particularly like. Although, the bands I listen to I tend to like the band's name.

frostywolf
04-17-2008, 04:53 PM
Genghis Tron (The "tron" bit really conjures up the right kind of idea - electronics, which are incorporated into the bands' grindcore-ish sound)
Iron Maiden (Probably the coolest sounding torture device you could name your band after)
Opeth (has that otherworldly and ethereal sound to it, which perfectly fits with their music, imo)
Judas Priest (Just like the way it sounds)
Megadeth (I think it looks much better without the "a")
King Diamond (doesn't fit his music at all, but I like the fact that his name sounds like he could be a poker player or something).
Witchfinder General (Just like the way it sounds, though it might be the horror movie fan in me speaking).
Oh jeez, almost completely forgot - My Bloody Valentine (for the same reason as "Witchfinder General").

The Grateful Dead - Their name came from a folktale that involves a traveler who encounters a corpse of someone who never received a proper burial The traveler then either pays off the dead person's debt and buries them. The traveler is later rewarded or has their life saved by a person or animal who is actually the soul of the dead person hence the soul is referred to as The Grateful Dead

I didn't know that. Thanks for sharing! Knowing the backstory behind the GD's name actually makes me more interested in the band, and I was already getting on a bit of a Dead kick before hearing about this.
I'd also like to ante up Aztec Camera as a band with a great name. I have no idea what it means, but hearing the name provoked a 'Darn, I wish I thought of that name' response from me the first time I heard one of their songs come on the radio.
Some other striking names I forgot to add to my first list on the first or second page:
Violent Femmes
R.E.M.
Echo and the Bunnymen (Definently got a 'Huh?' response out of me. Echo was actually the name of their drum machine until they found a permanent drummer during their early days. I'm not sure what the bunnymen part refers to, though.)
Sisters of Mercy (Borrowed from a Leonard Cohen tune.)
Green Day (The name revels in its immaturity. I like it.)
The Dead Milkmen (A spoof of the Dead Kennedys.)
Cosma
04-17-2008, 11:45 PM
Alice Cooper (He got the feel he was looking for. Sort of a Lizzy Borden, little girl with the butcher knife behind her back kind of thing)
KISS (Just because of all the meanings people have come up with for K.I.S.S.)
Double Trouble/Triple Threat Revue (both were SRV bands, only the first used his name)
and who can forget that the name was changed to protect the innocent....sorta
Lynyrd Skynyrd (Named, kinda, after their high school gym teacher Leonard Skinner and the funky spelling)
Luv_Studd

KISS - I had an overly religious aunt growing up who would always say that the name stood for Kings in Satan's Service, or something like that to try and disuade me from listening to them.

New Riders of the Purple Sage
Government Mule
I actually don't know any music from some of them. The names have just stuck with me.
Wow - a Dead fan who doesn't know the New Riders! (Name taken from a Zane Grey novel, I believe). You do know it started as a side project for Jerry Garcia, right? Didn't find any good vid of him playing with them, but here's the lineup without Jerry:
<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/9pMbOBXPLw0&hl=en"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/9pMbOBXPLw0&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>
And you'd like Government Mule. Warren Haynes from Allman Bros. heads that band up. Warren has played with Bob Weir and Phil, I do believe. YouTube seems to be down or I'd post a vid. Maybe later.

Genghis Tron (The "tron" bit really conjures up the right kind of idea - electronics, which are incorporated into the bands' grindcore-ish sound)
Do you know what does Genghis means? Genghis Khan was a mongol leader, probably the leader of the biggest empire ever (it's debated wheter Mongolian empire or Romain empire was the biggest). Genghis means "The great".

ZZ Top
Rush - Very fitting name indeed

The Allman Brothers Band
They were going to name it something else because they felt they were a true band and not just about Gregg and Duane, but the play on words was too much in the hippie movement.

There have been some awesome names put up! Lots of groups I had forgotten about / made myself forget about.
I like the added bit of info that goes along with some names describing their origins. Never knew where the Grateful Dead came from... very cool!
On a somewhat related note, I find the band Rainbow to be hilarious. Legendary heavy metal group featuring Dio? The only way you can make that sucker any more rockin' is by calling them RAINBOW. Easily the most metal band name ever. Anyone could call themselves Cannibal Corpse and sound brutal, but you have to rock roughly 1000% harder in a band called Rainbow to have people take you seriously.

Anything with the word "iron" in it sounds good. Iron Maiden, Iron Butterfly, Iron Man, etc. For some reason, that word is full of pure winsauce.
Also, one accidental name that a friend of mine came up with is full of win. What he had was "Astrophonic Earthquake". The way it came about was when we were coming up with a name for a band we wanted to start, and I suggested something. I forget what it was, but my friend mistook it for that name and it stuck. We never actually formed the band, though, unfortunately. It still stays in my head, though, if I ever do form a band in the future.

The RockBand Rock Band "Hitler and the Jew Crew" inspired my friends and I to come up with funny band names. Here are some of our concoctions:
"Plumbum and the Chewy Chickens" (We call our friend Plumbum, and yes, after the elemental name for lead)
"Ostrich Discharge Playground"
"Jesus and the Holy Mother Fuhz" (Jesus singing, God on Guitar, Shakti on drums... No official bassist yet.)
Oh, and for real ones. I've always liked Honest Bob and the Factory-to-Dealer-Incentives.

Almost Zombies: Another Coworkers band

Leftover Crack
Operation Ivy
Dead Kennedy's
Iced Earth - It evokes an image of the planet in a deep winter.
Cannibal Corpse - Never listened to them, but it doesn't take a genius to figure it out. The imagery of the name is enough.
Personally, I like one of my bands names:
DethTraktor
Inspired by:
DethKlok
Yet another favorite name.
And more favorite names:
Iron Maiden (Intriguing, simple, and evocative.)
Judas Priest (One of my math teachers once used this as an expletive. It has a good phonetic quality.)
Rammstein (It sounds so brutal and I don't even know what it means. Complements the music well.)
Dimmu Borgir (Another brutal sounding band name.)
Amon Amarth (Ditto.)

Bleed the Dream
A Change of Pace
Escape the Fate
Gym Class Heroes (Not really a BAND in the truest sense, but yeah)

It Dies Today
The Receiving End of Sirens
Reggie and the Full Effect
Under the Influence of Giants
My friend's created band on Rock Band:
"Al-Qaeda Airlines"
This reminded me of my favorite band on PSN: Air Nagasaki. The best part is their motto being "Droppin' the atomic rock bomb"

My favorite band name actually has to be a friend's band from high school. They never went anywhere, but they had a theme, and the songs were supposedly just following along with it.
For some reason I loved the name, and cracked up. It stuck, and it's been brought up by quite a few people from my old circle of friends a few times.
"A day in the life of a punk named, Norton Nezbit."
Ridiculously long, but..... Whatever. They were a punk band. Don't have to make any sense. :p
