LANSING -- An attempt to protect his home from burglars didn’t go as planned for a man who is recovering from an accidental explosion that may cost him his right hand, police and fire officials said.
The 50-year-old Lansing resident had been the victim of several break-ins, fire Lt. Maggie Murphy said.
“Apparently, he was trying to set booby traps to get the next guy who tried to break in,” Murphy told the Lansing State Journal for a story posted on its Web site early Friday.
Neighbors identified the man as Victor Iacobescu, who ran into Patrick Struble’s home for help after he set off an explosive inside his house on Thursday. Struble said Iacobescu’s right arm was wrapped in a bloody towel.
“It was kind of like a dirty bomb, like a pipe bomb,” Struble told WLNS-TV in describing the explosive device. “He accidentally triggered it, and it almost blew his hand off.”
Police are investigating the incident with the intent to pursue charges.
“Anything that goes ‘bang’ is illegal,” police Lt. Bruce Ferguson said. “I can’t think of any (legal) reason why someone would be making a bomb.”
