I just got done playing a marathon session of Score Duel (on 360), moving up from rank 520 to around 320 (I'm teh best!). While playing, it's inevitable to run into a number of "quitters", there was a point where 6 songs in a row were over before the halfway point... Just what's to be expected.
Of course, with that time, it's also inevitable that my connection will at some point fail me (as it always seems to do). During the middle of a fairly close song (I was in the lead at the time by about a thousand points), my connection dropped. I cursed, then re-connected to play some more.
I got a message from the guy I was playing, I expected some sort of "omg u noob" comment, but instead found "ur a *****" waiting for me. I sent him a voice response explaining what happened, but that was only greeted with a nother "*****" comment.
About half an hour later I was playing the same song again, but against a different guy. He "missed" all the notes up until he finally "quit", I didn't really think anything of it, and started up a new game.
It was against the same guy who I had just played. He was laughing as he explained what happened, something about his guitar or connection or something, that really doesn't matter. What matters is that it apologized for dropping out of the game, and immediantly got into this new song, ready to bring his A-game.
I ended up winning, but we were joking around the majority of the game. After it was over, I put him on my preferred list, and put the other guy on my avoided list.
"Quitters" are always going to happen in this game, it's a problem, but there's no way to really solve it. It's almost impossible for a player to tell if their opponent quit because they were losing, or because of outside reasons "beyond their control". As far as I see it, it's a game, as long as it's fun and the online connects you to level-headed gamers, I'm OK with a few forfeits here and there. To me, someone quitting a game doesn't warrant negative feedback, somebody being a total ass about it does.

Reading that I got the sense that it was a strangely uplifting story. I'm not sure why. But it was, at least, interesting.
Guys like the first one are the reason I don't like playing anything over xbox live (unless its with friends).

8U Indeed, it is quite possible that quitters are really only quitters a portion of the time, as it is possible that they were being disconnected and that they are not quitting, or that they are having guitar problems and that they are not quitting.

But seriously, yeah.
More the reason to simply tell the people who want to "punish" quitters to just shut up and enjoy their easy win.
Not entirely the case. The *software* knows the difference (manual intentional quit vs connection dropped or somesuch other reason). IMO in the case of a manual intentional quit, it should award the win to the other player to make this sort of behavior discouraged.

If that's the case, then that's good, however, I'm talking more on the gamer-side of things. There's no way for us to differentiate between a forfeit and a dropped connection unless the other person tells us... but of course, being humans, that'll never work out all the time (as my first example shows).
I'm fairly sure any sort of drop by any player awards the win to the person still playing. I'm not sure if the "dropper" is credited with a loss every time though.
I'd like to have a high rank, but in all honestly, playing with good-natured people and losing is more entertaining than beating somebody who acts like a total jerk.

Agreed, I know I've had a few dual 100% situations, and it never really mattered much to me who came out on top, because it was a good battle either way!

The software cannot tell the difference between a intentional and accidental disconnection. All a player has to do is pull the cord and it goes as disconnect. Quitting is the same problem on CNC3.

By intentional he meant pressing the forfeit button I think.

Maybe you'll give me back that win you stole from me then :p
Honestly, I lose every single time that Bon Jovi song comes around, it puts me to sleep and I miss dumb sh!t that I should be hitting. gg

but what he is saying is that if the software detects that, kids will simply yank the cord instead to avoid the issue, and achieve the same result

Personally I find it amusing.... it's a game. I suppose if I was a "professional" gamer it would matter but anyone who really cares about about this in my opinion is simply sad. Now don't get me wrong, I'm very competitive, I love to win, and I REALLY enjoy a close match no matter who wins... but in the end... it's a game. Actually I really enjoy seeing everyone else's character as well.
With that being said, if I quit... and I do. I do it at the beginning, I do it properly, and it's usually because I hate the song that was picked. So when that happens... good luck to you sir, enjoy the win, cause it really don't matter to me ;)

I dig Jon & Co., it's just I go from duels with tracks like Blitzkrieg Bop, Ride the Lightning, Train Kept A Rollin........to Dead or Alive. All of a sudden I'm twitching, wanting to DO something....and there's nothing there. Autopilot takes over and I miss stuff, and after two hours of playing I have nothing to show for it because of one loss.
If I ever get the privilege of meeting Richie I'll have a bone to pick ;)
