View Full Version : Would you buy a "discography" pack?

Given recent events, it may seem that I just now got this idea... but really, I've actually suggested this a few times in the past, but now I feel I can bring it up again.
For example, on Itunes, you can buy the "Complete Led Zeppelin" for $99. What would you pay for the entire discography of a band on rock band? Obviously, it will vary from band to band.
The Who, for example. I imagine it would be over $100. Would you buy it? I think I would buy it in pieces... maybe an album at a time. I mean, dropping $100 all at once doesn't seem too smart, and with 4 instruments per song, I don't need them all at once. I'm sure I would have them all, eventually.
Would you buy a "discography" pack? How much?
Oh, and that would put Rock Band over Oblivion for "most expensive DLC" :)

i would be the biggest hypocrite in the world because If bon jovi came out, I'd be there
but in reality it would be a terrible idea to not spread it out.....the insane riots over WTF we dont have one mother f'in green day song but every song ever made by the who is on!!!!!
oh there would be riots, the pope would have to step in, congressional laws will pass, bootleging will come back but booze would be replaced by "street trax, the other drug"
is that a world you want to live in?

I'd pay for a Bad Religion entire discography about as much as I have paid to get their entire discography in cd form - about $40.
But really, I would buy their entire discography, not even joking, if it was in Rock Band, assuming it still averaged around 2 dollars a song (though preferably one dollar a song). I'd probably have to do it one album per month though, and not an entire discography "pack" as I am not, in fact, made of money.
Of course, they have 14 albums, with 14+ songs per album (the full version of How Can Hell Be Any Worse is 28 songs...). So, you know, perhaps not the best example.

Cream would be the only one I guarantee I'd buy entirely (a few songs wouldn't work, though)

I agree with you 100%, I'd happily buy a Bon Jovi complete catalog, but I don't think it's a good idea. Other bands that I'd buy complete catalogs for are Guns n' Roses, Def Leppard, and Tesla.

Phish
Ben Harper & the Innocent Criminals
Peter Gabriel
Tool
U2
NIN
Cream
Ween
Eagles
Talking Heads
Pink Floyd
The Jimi Hendrix Experience
Jack Johnson

You know, now that I see my list, and realize how many more artists would fall in the 90% range, I think maybe having catalogs would financially ruin me.

Yea Some songs. Im not the biggest fan, And I woulden't buy every song the've ever made. but I would definatly buy a few.

I mean how many bands can you name that all their songs would work as DLC
Only about 10 I can think of
I really hope we get Supernaut sometime soon. that drum solo kicks ass.
Oh Yeah The Root Of All evil is American Idol :D

No thanks. I love Black Sabbath's early days (makes you wonder why Ozzy's solo career never really stepped up to the plate) and even appreciate Dio in general, but that whole Tony Martin era sucked.

Metallica.
Hell, I'd even cross over if Guitar Hero announced Guitar Hero: Metallica.
Imagine, playing from Kill 'em All to the unfortunate bus accident that killed all 4 members before they could record St. Anger.

If it turns out to be good, we can just say that they're zombies.
Zombie Hetfield.
It helps that I can't take them seriously after seeing that documentary.
Especially Kirk. I felt so sorry for him. He acted like a 5 year old having to deal with fighting parents. Lars being the abusive father and James being the submissive-yet-*****y recovering alcoholic mother.
"This... is your favorite metal band!"
"You don't respect me anymore! You never let me do my work!"
"Well maybe if you'd hit your drums a little bit softer!"

I'm assuming your referring to "Some Kind of Monster"? I never saw it, though I heard many parts of it were not meant to be taken seriously. I hope this album truly is the "link between ...And Justice for All and The Black Album", though I just don't know.
Though I like the idea of zombie Metallica. So we are going to assume that Cliff never possessed this power?

I'd buy a Modest Mouse, RHCP, or Relient K discography...probably Bloc Party too, but their discography consists of 2 albums, so it wouldn't be that much ;P.

I'd pay big money for a Primus discography. Tool would be pretty sweet too. Pearl Jam would be nice too. I get chills thinking about a Jane's Addiction discography but that will never happen, too much cussing, but man Whores, Three Days, Ted, Just Admit It, etc. would be fun to play. I don't think we are going to get true discographys though, I think it's going to be more like the Dead packs were they will make greatest hits taking songs from an assortment of albums.

I get the discographies of The Cure, The Smiths, Morrissey, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Pixies and They Might Be Giants, and I'd pay 1.5x the cost of the CDs.

Yeah. Sadly, he wasn't there when the immortality van came by. :/ That Cliff always enjoyed sleeping in.
But yeah, SKoM was... laughable. Like you think they're kinda macho metalheads... and then you see that James Hetfield is very passive and has very girlish habbits (he even kinda prances), Kirk Hammet acts like a depressed little whose parents are divorcing, and Lars Ulrich... does nothing but throw tantrums.

There a very few discography's, if any, that I would buy for this game.
I think it's a bad idea, and we need to do what we were doing in feb-march, lets get more genres, more bands not in the game.

Probably the only band I'd do this for would be King Crimson, and since I think having even one of their songs in RB ranks in the "When pigs fly" area, an entire discography would be something I could only dream of.
(Maybe when Rock Band 4 is out, and they've run out of all other music to use. :P)

If it happened to be a band that I loved?
You betcha!
But I'd still rather not see it happen, for one reason only: Imagine the time it would take to code all of those songs, just for one band? Again, it'd be cool if it happened to be a band that I worshiped but, even then, imagine the hordes of Rock Band players who don't share my taste, having to wait, I dunno, 3 months for new DLC while HMX devote all of their resources to the complete discography of The Beatles, for instance.
I'd say that those players would have a very legitimate reason to feel left out. It would rock MY world, to be sure, but I'd rather continue having a mix of songs as it is now so everybody gets a "day in the DLC list sun."
Of course, if the coders at HMX were to suddenly get virtually unlimited resources...
I'd go bankrupt. :D

I would pay $200 to have Iron Maiden's full catalogue, but do you know how much effort it would take to port every single song by a band? It would take an extremely long time for that.
Ardius

Theres only two bands that come to mind that have had close-to-flawless discographies, and thats Iron Maiden and Rush. Having said that, I'd rather see the Iron Maiden one than a Rush one.
Before anyone mentions it, yes, many big fans of Maiden love and enjoy No Prayer for the Dying, Fear of the Dark, The X Factor and Virtual XI. So dont even bother with the Blaze or Janick bashing to get your point across.

Discography? Hmmm... Honestly, I'd have to say no. It's a grand idea, but unfortunately I don't think there's many bands that can pull it off. There's a lot of legends out there with hit after hit on all of their albums, but there's always duds in there. Entire albums are tricky enough to do, HMX has to be extremely picky to choose albums with good songs from start to finish, but entire discographys? That's just too much, and frankly I'm not interested in paying for DLC that doesn't meet a certain standard of fun and good listening.
Personally, I'd rather see HMX stick to singling out (no pun intended) specific super-hits from every great rock band out there, past to present, and just have a little bit of the best from everybody. That's ok though, because that's what I'll probably end up doing with most albums... just downloading the select best tracks from each. =)

For the Who, Zeppelin, Rush, Queen, Foreigner, Styx, Black Sabbath, etc. I'd either buy the entire catalog or $80 worth of it...there are many other bands that I'd buy <$80 worth of the discography though.

I would pay $200 for a Rush discography, provided that they were masters. Since we don't have any Rush masters yet, I'd say that's probably an impossibility.
$200 isn't outrageous. I count 153 different Rush songs in my collection, I don't think I have any duplicates and no live songs among those, so $200 would be a bargain at about $1.31 per song.
Making entire catalogs available is nice, but I hope they do them one album at a time, so they're more affordable and can come out over a span of time. Of course, most bands don't have a continuous release of albums over a 30+ year period like Rush does. :p

I like the idea, though musical tastes would collide when someone's favorite band discography didn't come out.
Otherwise I would purchase the entire discographies for Rush, Blue Oyster Cult, Yes, King Crimson, Deep Purple, and The Mars Volta(if they were to come out)! :)

Ha, I came in here to say nearly the exact same thing. Everything from Court, to Larks, to Red... to the 80's trilogy, Construkction and Power. Gods know I've bought it all in enough different formats and editions over the years...
Good luck attempting to get Fripp to license it all, tho.
Also would love to see discographies of The Clash, The Police, Talking Heads, Public Image Ltd. (lightyears better than the Pistols any day), Metallica, Megadeth, Porcupine Tree, and Devo.

It depends on the band. Also are we talking B-Sides. There are some great B-Sides out there for some really great bands. If that was included than the chances of me getting a complete collection just increased.
