View Full Version : How to tackle the high notes for vocals

Here's a question for everyone:
For the vocals, do you think it would be better to try and sing the higher notes that you can semi-hit (even though its at the edge of your range and people will be able to tell) or drop it down an octave and play it safe but not put up as exciting a performance?
Also, would your answer change based on the venue (i.e. friend's house VS. ROCK BAND AUDITION STAGE!)?

Are you going for a high score or just having fun?

Well, ideally, I wanna have fun and have everyone else around me have fun (but still have their eardrums intact).

Depends. I am the singer in my band, and though I do not have musicians voice, I am going to give it my best and try and emulate as best I can the voice of the singer in the actual song.

Well, if you're not afraid of scaring a few animals away or anything, I say go for the high notes!

i'll sing how I want. I don't really care about the vocal juging as long as I sing it the way that I think sounds right. I remember in karaoke revolution sometimes you would sing is ways less than faithful to the original style in order to score perfect scores. So to get great scores you would have to sing almost bad.

I say reach your hand into your pocket, and squeeze your balls as hard as you can. That's how I'm gonna have to do it if there is any King Diamond in RB. :D
Although if you are a girl, I can't help you...

for all those who haven't heard King Diamond

I can do some high notes, but there is range in between my normal voice and the high notes that is completely silent. So for example, in Bon Jovi's Living on a Prayer, I can hit the "halfway there whoa-ohhh living on a prayer" (although I can only do this a few times before I destroy that range of my voice... not used very often). Most songs seem to lack the mid-high range that I cannot hit and are either in my normal range or in my extended range.
It would sound pretty awful to drop an octave to sing the high notes ;) I guess if you're going for 5* solo, you might have to resort to this, but it would sound better if you could sing the whole song an octave lower.

When I'm enjoying myself and singing there is no way I don't try and hit those high notes even if it costs me score. If I'm playing for real though trying to pass the song and get a nice score I suggest playing it safe. If I were you though, I'd not worry about it, and just enjoy myself and go for those high notes!

in karaokee you don't have to worry about hitting high or low notes...for instance in karokee revolution you can sing I Walk The Line in a high pitched voice and still score a perfect score
