Read the n00b survival guide before asking the same questions a million others have asked.

well that's funny, I read the whole thing and it doesn't say anything about what I'm asking. Can't you answer my question instead of being a smart ass?

And why don't you ask politely? A simple "please" goes a long way.
But to answer your first question, yes, you can take all of the fun out of it and play with a controller.

He's right. Let's all stop *****ing and show some respect.
In my mind it should work. I mean the peripherals are just supped controllers. It's coded with "A, B, Y, etc., etc." in mind.

Yea you should be able to play drums and bass and guitar with the controller I think the only thing you would need would be the mic, although you can also just use a headset.
And please everyone try to be nice when answering peoples questions.

Good piece of proof right there. Nothing is being coded fr RB instruments specifically. Not even the crappy headset is left out. Feel the love.

You can even do the vocal tracks with the controller. There's going to be support for tapping out the Morse code for the lyrics as they scroll across. ;)

I'd actually like to know this too. Is there any confirmation anywhere that a standard controller can be used to play, or is it just speculation right now?

Really? I tried that on the GHIII demo and felt like I was trying to type with mittens on.

The guitars and drums are just glorified controllers. Just like the GH guitars, or the DDR Dance Pads.

I got the GHIII demo and I only use the controller on it because I don't have a guitar. I can play on expert with it now.
EDIT: I wish I was joking about this post.

There's actually one really solid reason to support controllers -- disability and accessibility.
The drum kit's a good example. I'm only half-sure I can play it with my disability; hitting things with sticks, okay, but that bass pedal's gonna be tricky to balance my body while pushing down on. But if there's the option of using the XYAB buttons and dpad or trigger or something instead of the drums, I can enjoy rhythm based tapping and still have fun.
Accessibility is a concern at HMX, based on their blog posts about how they've taken disability into account when designing this stuff. So, I don't doubt there'll be a way to use a controller.

I can confirm, unless I'm missing some menu hidden somewhere, that with just the standard controller connected, you can't do anything. With the headset connected, you can do the vocals. I see no way at all to play the instruments, or even to choose what to do, with just the controller attached:(

Well that doesn't seem fair. You would think that if they sell it stand-alone it would be compataible in some way with a standard controller. So essentially if you don't have a guitar controller or drums, the only thing you can do is sing with a mic or headset. I guess I can hope that a patch might get released as I'm seeing people are also having problems with GH guitars being recognized as standard controllers. I just happen to be one of those strange people that has more fun playing with a standard controller with DDR and Guitar Hero. Some people may get annoyed that someone even cares about this as a feature, but if this thread is any proof I'm at least not the only one.

I had a friend lend me his guitar today and I've been playing GH3 with it (haven't tried RB yet) and I suck!!!:p
I've played with the controller for so long that I can't get the hang of the guitar. Now I really want to be able to play RB with the controller:(

See and this is what I don't understand. In the past, Harmonix has stated (in regard to Guitar Hero/Rock Band controller compatibility:
"Guitar controllers are like any other standard game controller ? the controller sends a signal back to the game depending on the buttons you push. If a third party game controller is based on open standards, then it should work with Rock Band as well."
So if this is the case, then why exactly can't you use a standard game controller to play Rock Band? Doesn't seem right to sell the game in stand-alone form if you can't play it without buying something else. And even though you can play them with a regular controller, Guitar Hero II wasn't made avaialble in stand-alone form on the 360 until there were other guitar options for the system available. The same goes for DDR for the 360. It wasn't released as a stand-alone until third-parties started releasing pads for the 360.
And even though I game on a 360, it makes no sense why they're even selling the stand-alone PS3 version of Rock Band because those guys apparently can only play with the official Rock Band guitar right now. *sigh* It doesn't seem like it would be that complicated to just allow people to use the controllers that came with their system. If DDR and Guitar Hero can do it, it doesn't seem unreasonable to expect it from Rock Band.
So hopefully when/if someone form Harmonix addresses the issue with PS3 users and the Les Paul controller, we can at least find out why you can't use a standard controller and if they plan on making it possible or not.

well thanks Paska and Gonzalez for screwing me over. i bought rock band with all the instruments and now i find out you can't use a regular 360 controller. thats nice because the only way i can play is with a 360 controller. now i just spent $200 on something i cant use. thanks for the bad information. i blame you for this.:mad:

That was bad information. The control scheme goes as such.
Vocalist = Microsoft Hand Controller
Guitarist = Guitar-shaped Controller
Drummer = Drum-shaped Controller
Always, no exceptions.

i'm in the same boat. disability = no playing RB. they better fix this.
