The upper buttons on the guitar are the "lower" ones I think you are referring to. The smaller ones closer to the strum bar are considered higher and are used for solo sections, the lower ones are the ones closer to the top of the neck and they are used normally as they have been used in the past.

i am tlaking about the ones nearest the base of the guitar by the strum button, start, and select buttons.

I'ts sorft of confusing - "higher" on the guitar means closer to the base - or lower from your point of view. It's like the stage left thing...
But they're for solos - there are parts of the song where you can use these buttons instead of the higher ones without the need to ever hit the strum bar. I'm not exaclty sure how it works since I've never seen anyone playing show how to use them specifically.
The interview mentioned in this thread (http://community.rockband.com/vbforum/showthread.php?t=4577) clears up some of the many hardware questions.

Those things are hard to use
I'm sure once I've played the game for awhile it'll be easier, but trying to find the buttons and stuff is confusing.

Just to clear things up: "Higher" refers to closer to the body of the guitar because on a real guitar, the closer you get to that, the higher the pitch gets (note, whatever). "Lower" of course, is in the other direction, closer to the headstock.

Picture is pretty fool-proof...

If you read my post (which I guess might have been a bit confusing) I explained that you were mistaken and the ones you are talking about are for the solos they are considered "higher"

I think Harmonix said that in a solo, if you start to use those buttons, every not will be a HOPO until the solo's over. Not sure how this'll really work, though, until I play with it some.

I'd love to see someone from HMX rocking out with the new strat and doing a bit of show boating with the solo buttons eh

Everyone pretty much explained it but if you still don't get it here ya go.
The top buttons are used to play the song normally, Then when you get to the solo you can (but you don't have to) position your hands down the the higher notes -The ones closer to the base of the guitar-. Again, you CAN play the whole song just like you would a guitar hero game with just the top buttons. You don't have to go down to the bottom buttons for the solo to work normally. Those bottom buttons are just for "Fun factor" meaning once you get really good at the game and want to really get into it, then you would use the "higher" notes.
Hope that helped... Best way I could explain it.
Edit: Oh and as for the every note being a hammer on and pull off, not too sure about that. I know there will be finger tapping though, so you can just tap the note's corresponding button rather than holding the button and strumming.

Yeah. The lower/higher terminology has always confused me. I've always called the low fets the high ones (since they are higher in height if you stand a guitar up).

I did the same thing before I started to play the real guitar, Then it all made sense :P
