Indie doesn't have to mean that no one's ever heard of it. It's grown into its own genre that isn't based on how many people listen to it, but the sound and style of the music. Just because certain bands have that sound but are popular doesn't mean that they aren't indie.

Indie doesn't have to do with obscurity OR any type of sound. It's a type of record label or a radio format. You can't classify an indie sound, because it's not about sound at all, its just about the band's position in the music business. Therefore, bands like The Arctic Monkeys are not indie. Modest Mouse and the Shins aren't, but used to be (not sure about the shins).

A friend of mine played Blue-Green God by the Meat Puppets for me, and I have been OBSESSED with the idea of playing it in Guitar Hero or, better yet, Rock Band.
I'd also really like to see some post-rock. Russian Circles come to mind as being somewhat feasible in terms of length and rockitude.
Sonic Youth - C'mon people.
Hella could be the next Jordan.
Oh, and I'd really like some Death From Above 1979, or better yet, Lightning Bolt, but both are generally 2-instrument bands.

Russian Circles would be awesome. Their entire cd is just 45 minutes of epic-ness.
But isn't Rock Band supposed to have a vocal part?

So with that logic, hardcore bands on labels like Sumerian Records, or heck, even bigger ones like Trustkill Records, are now classified as indie? Don't think so.

Actually yeah. There's indie hardcore, indie metal, indie rap, all sorts of stuff like that. That's pretty much what you'd call it. :)

I would not object to a bit of Decemberistness.
Unfortunately, Rockband lacks an official accordian peripheral.

DAMN!
Anyone who can think of a good post-rock band with vocals: suggest the hell out of 'em.
Fer real.

develop a wah-wah pedal to work with the game, and stick a stone roses song on it. that'd be awesome.
