View Full Version : So THAT's What They Were Singing? Who Knew?

One of the fun aspects of Rock Band for me is discovering lyrics I never knew (or thought I knew but didn't).

We bought Blondie's "Call Me" from the DLC with our singer saying 'Yeah, I know that song'. That turned out to be closer to "Yeah, I know the line 'Call me!'." I knew probably 3 or 4 lines in that song and the rest, uhhhh.. yeah. Had NOOOO idea! Didn't even know part of it was in French until we played it in Rock Band.

Also, I remember getting all thrown off playing "Enter Sandman" on drums the first time our singer sang "Heavy thoughts tonight and they aren't of Snow White". I remember cracking up thinking he just made up lyrics because I had no idea those were the real lyrics. I always just kind of hummed through that part (heavy thoughts tonight and the hours so light? ha) when I sang it from the radio.

And for pure WTF lyrics... "Black Hole Sun". I crack up every time the line about something something "... far too long for snakes". Huh??? I cannot wrap my head around those lyrics.

Ha! I know what you are saying. I too had no clue that Blondie spoke french in that song. I just kinda hummed along to it when I heard the song on the radio.
"Black Hole Sun" is a really cool song to me personally. If you have ever seen the video it kind of sets the stage for a really wicked dream that you have sometimes. Then you wake up and say "What the hell was that?". I don't think the lyrics were supposed to make sense though. "Times are gone for honest men" kind of sets a depressing tone but it is otherwise an awesome song, IMO.

I get that a few times, yeah. And it's always fun. "Call Me" held surprises for me as well. "Oh, it's FRENCH. No wonder I had no idea what the heck she was saying there." Not that I still have any idea what she's saying there, but anyway.

A friend of mine was so excited when "Roam" came up. The "I hear a wind, whistling air" bit? She never knew they were words at all, apparently.

See? Learning can be fun!

To add to the "never knew there were words" at all part (let alone knowing any actual words)... How about the last third of "Orange Crush"? The first few times I heard that I thought they just made up part of that song for Rock Band exclusively.

After singing Mississippi Queen my friends and I began to think that the song was about a hooker from Mississippi... Also after singing Brainpower I was laughing just from the lyrics...

There's something about a Windmill in the chorus of All The Small Things. I always heard it as windmill, but thought it was something else because it doesn't make any sense. As it turns out, it's windmill.

"Appelles moi" is French for "Call me."

"Seulement le bon dieu sait ce que j'aurais pu faire sans mon casque" is French for "Only the good lord knows what I could have done without my helmet" (one of the few other phrases I know in that language).

On topic, the craziest lyric in the game for me was "I love her! I need her! I seed her!" (What?!)

The second I played "Roam" for the first time, I realized just how much of the lyrics I'd been misunderstanding all these years. The "whistling air" part was only the beginning. "Call Me", I only knew the the chorus and the "oooh". "Enter Sandman", same deal- only knew the chorus.

I wonder how many people (except the big Ramones fans, of course) knew anything other than "hey, ho, let's go" for "Blitzkrieg Bop" prior to playing RB.

There's a ton of those songs in this game and that's what's awesome about it. I don't really focus too much on the songs as far as lyrics go cause i'm primarily the drummer or guitarist, but my roomate loves to sing and she's always telling crazy stories of lyrics and such.

Orange Crush is my one peeve, since when you're playing tambourine you should be singing (or really speaking):

We'd circle and we'd circle and we'd circle to stop and consider and
Centered on the pavement stacked up all the trucks jacked up and
Our wheels in slush and orange crush in pocket and all this here county
Hell any county it's just like heaven here and I was remembering and I
Was just in a different county and all then this whirlybird that I
Headed for I had my goggles pulled off I knew it all I knew every back
Road and every truck stop

I'm 90% sure it's Stipe speaking, so you should be doing that part.

R.E.M. did do some weird vocal stuff on that song. Seem to recall some part of it was sung through a megaphone, either when they play live or on the album, don't remember which.

:D

"Complete Control" has the most hard-to-hear lyrics I've ever listened to.

"Dave said, Willy can walk on coal.
A weave and a wombat on an egg roll.
Dave said, gotta rub the lamp.
The pimple laughed, to the place with mare.
Ho ho ho, someone really small!
Ho ho ho, mega cone, Gattaca, Lost!
On the Nazgul, I make a cook and Ed.
I'll open up the baklava, Dick Gephardt and a Gecko!
Every hotel, it was a mint on a log.
Cup full of bunny.
Got a rake? Sure!"

I'll stop now. Just watch the below video. That's where I got this from. The lyrics sound so much like it. Every time I watch, I laugh extremely hard:

My in real life band has been covering that song for years for live shows, so I've known the lyrics by heart for much longer than this game's been out. Yet, somehow, I still had trouble singing it on medium. Not sure how that worked out...

For me the big weird one was Cherub Rock. I've known that song probably since it was brand new but I've never been able to make out anything Billy Corgan sings. So I was rather surprised to learn just how honey-centric the song was.

Yeah, Call Me surprised me with the French part, and Synchronicity II still makes me smile having seen some of the crazy lines (shouting over the din of Rice Krispies?!).

Learning You've Got Another Thing Comin' was an interesting event too....

Yeah, when I played that on Guitar Hero 3, I was like...there's no way that could be about honey.... and yet it was....

Actually I get lyrics wrong a lot, so if it sounds ridiculous, I usually figure I misheard it

(such as what I thought My Name Is Jonas was:

"My Name Is Jonas,
And I'm carryin' the will.
Thanks for all your donuts,
for this is how we fill."

Not quite as funny without having heard me sing it with full confidence that my lyrics were right)

Besides "honey" in Cherub Rock, the only line I've ever managed to get right was "abortion" in Fat Lip....

Honey and abortions...I think I may need to see a psychologist.

I had NO clue what Here It Goes Again was. I still don't really. Also, I thought the "simultaneous release" in Dani California was "some will take it some will leave". Don't even get me started on Enter Sandman, Call Me, Black Hole Sun, etc. 3's and 7's was also one for me. I knew it was in English and that was about it.

as a voxist, this is a great thread.

to be honest, unless i actually knew the song going in (and i only listen to classic rock and don't much contemporary stuff), it was a safe bet i didn't know the song, let alone the lyrics, so it's been fun learning the songs.

i think a song with really cool lyrics has to be Green Grass and High Tides:

In a place you only dream of, where your soul is always free
Silver stages, golden curtains, filled my head plain as could be
As a rainbow grew around the sun, all the stars I've loved, who died
Came from somewhere beyond the scene you see, these lovely people played just for me

Now if I let you see this place where stories all ring true
Then will you let me past your face to see what's really you
It's not for me I ask this question as though I were a king
For you have to love, believe and feel, before the burst of tambourines take you there

{Refrain}
Green grass and high tides forever
Castles of stone, soul and glory
Lost faces say we adore you
As kings and queens bow and play for you

Those who don't believe me, find your souls and set them free
Those who do, believe and know that time will be your key
Time and time again I've thanked them for a peace of mind
That helped me find myself amongst the music and the rhyme that enchants you there

but on the topic of "oh, he says ____" -- i certainly didn't know the lyrics to 'welcome home' heading in, but i love singing that song now, and it has some pretty crazy lrycis too, haha

and definitely add the lyrics to "i get by" in as a surprise when i finally learned them

I crack up every time the line about something something "... far too long for snakes". Huh??? I cannot wrap my head around those lyrics.
"Times are gone for honest men, and sometimes far too long for snakes"...

It's not that strange to understand the meaning, actually. Honest men are relics of a bygone day, and there aren't even many plain old dishonest ones left, either... something like that.

It's poetry, it's something that may be easily understood but difficult to articulate in words other than the ones that the poet used.

On topic, the craziest lyric in the game for me was "I love her! I need her! I seed her!" (What?!)
He puts his seed in her. A coital reference, much like Sunshine of Your Love.

Black Hole Sun, according to Cornell, doesnt have any meaning. its him playing with words that according to him describe the dreamy music (which was written at an earlier stage). at least, so sayeth wikipedia.

Part of what makes it funny for me is I am always very focused on the drum pattern and trying to stay on beat so I never actually have time to read the lyrics during the game. I only tend to notice them when our singer sings something different than what I was expecting in my head, or when our singer messes up - and I never know which is which! I can't just stop and look/ask without crashing out of the song. That's why I cracked up the first time I heard "Snow White". I couldn't figure out if a Metallica song really had an unexpected "Snow White" reference or if our singer just messed up.

Chalk me up to the list of people who thought there were f-bombs in that song from Vagiant. I knew they wouldn't really allow that since they took out the one in "Sabotage" but it sure sounds like like it.

Oh another one I forgot... I always like the song Tom Sawyer and knew that some of the lyrics were deep ("changes aren't permanent. But change is" - whoa! cute Keannu voice here). But there were a lot of lyrics in that song I didn't know and when our singer sang "catch the spit" I lost it again. Whenever that line comes up it takes me out of the song (cue needle scratching across record in my head).

HeadHunter, thanks for explaining that in small words so that I could understand. I just meant that the lyric was the biggest surprise for me.

I'd never heard Highway Star all the way through, and I played every song on vox first. So as opposed to anyone who didn't take this same route, I was yelling that lyric before I'd ever heard it.

ONE SHOT.. HEY!
TWO SHOT HEY HEY!
THREE SHOT.. HEY, HEY HEY!

MONSTER KEEPER!

then after the show i go to my buddy, man, that monster keeper song was awesome! and hes like.. monster keeper? so i sang it to him, and he lost his mind laughing at me... little did i know, he was really saying "Mas Tequila"

so now i always call Mas Tequila, Monster Keeper.

Hah, that's awesome.

If we're moving to misheard lyrics, one of my best friends is notorious for it. My favourite of hers though was when we went to see Metallica back in '92. She hadn't eaten anything like all day, so by the time the concert actually started, she was close to gnawing her own arm off. "Master of Puppets" starts playing, and all she can hear is "Mustard! And! Pickles!"

And thus is the song forevermore.

The big revelation for me was Suffragette City.

I've been listening to this song for 20 years and, granted, I'm a little hard of hearing and have difficulty understanding what a lot of singers are saying...but anyway I always thought the line was:

Don't be a lonely man cause you can't afford the ticket

But I was surprised the first time I sang it and read the actual line:

Don't lean on me man cause you can't afford the ticket

I always thought the song was about getting a ticket to where the ladies are. If you can't afford the ticket, you miss out and are lonely. I really need to look up the lyrics I'm not sure about...

Speaking of which, I need to learn Still Alive - it's a tricky one.

I like Suffragette City too. I stumbled upon a Bowie album when I was younger and really took to it. That song means, to me anyway, Bowie saying to a buddy of his that he doesn't want the burden of friendship over his woman (or women). "Droogie [friend] don't crash here. There's only room for one and here she comes, here she comes." And so on. That’s my take on it anyway. I could be incorrect on my speculation.

I think that the song as a whole is referring to "Agent Orange" which was a chemical used by the US in the Vietnam war.

Still the lyrics that go something like "High on the roof, thin the blood.
Another one coming on waves tonight, coming in your home." were pretty tough to make out before the game. I always kinda thought it was too bad we didn't get to sing the bassist Mike Mills' parts in the song and we were held just to Stipe.. kinda realistic I guess but our guitar plays both leads and rythm in alot of cases. :p

Oh and we should be able to do the megaphone part in Orange Crush!

That was my biggest disappointment.... it'd make for a good, difficult talky part and really change up the song for the singer. But oh well. Tambourine instead, I guess.

Also, if you have In Time, check the liner notes.... Bill Berry (I believe it was) concedes that even after all the times they've played Orange Crush he's still not sure what it means.

I think my biggest misheard lyric has to be in Sprode by Freezepop...where they apparently sing "we're in demand" I always thought they sang "we're into men".
Well, it does kinda make sense after the "throw your undies on the stage" bit... :D

Oh and we should be able to do the megaphone part in Orange Crush!

Are you suggesting that we have more talky parts? Shame on you!!:p;):D

I also heard that as well, until I watched the Vocals portion on YouTube... Still a weird song nonetheless...

...and with "This Ain't a Scene..." I think I saw on a misheard lyrics video (or maybe its just me), "All the boys with the dance, fork, and lung." Of course, I knew those weren't right, but I just found out today what the actually lyric is. (All the boys who the dance floor didn't love.)

Misheard lyrics are all around us, you just have to think in another's perspective. (Dreams of wars, dreams of liars, dreams of dragon's fire, AND A BAKED APPLE PIE!)

It sounds great in theory, but wait until you see the skidmarks...

Heh. I was just picturing an audience full of men, some sitting on each others shoulders, spinning their undies around screaming "wooooo".
Yeah. I would imagine that women do this act more gracefully... No offense, of course.:D

None taken. I'm afraid that your little fantasy there will only happen at a Village People concert, though ;)

Another fun misheard lyric was from a song that's not in RB (I'm not even sure what the song was, to be honest), but the actual lyrics in the chorus were 'I wish that I could be like everybody can, I was that I could be like every other man'. The singer had a funny way of pronouncing his b's, and so a friend of mine ended up thinking that the song was about a man who had trouble peeing. :D

LOL@ Village People concert. Not a fantasy though. It is actually an illustration that I want to purge from my mind. Judging from the concerts that I have been to, those men are probably experiencing a bad case of "swamp ass" and I really wouldn't want to have sweaty undies hit me in the face.:D

Let me add my two cents;

I've been singing In Bloom wrong since 1993. I couldn't figure out what he was saying so instead of "tender age in bloom" I would just say "time to ride your broom". I knew it was wrong but I couldn't be bothered to find out what he was really saying. When I sang the song in RB for the first time and found out the real lyrics it made perfect sense, being that the name of the song doesn't come up anywhere else in the song. I just thought that it was one of those songs where the title isn't actually said during the song.

You aren't the only one that got "In Bloom" wrong. I thought he was saying "Ed's the one, who likes all our pretty songs...." I was thinking WTF is Ed?

That was my biggest disappointment.... it'd make for a good, difficult talky part and really change up the song for the singer. But oh well. Tambourine instead, I guess.

Also, if you have In Time, check the liner notes.... Bill Berry (I believe it was) concedes that even after all the times they've played Orange Crush he's still not sure what it means.

Yes I do have In Time and I have read that statement. I love hearing that kinda commentary.
Also heres hoping to Berry re-joining the band. He would fit in perfectly with the new (old?) direction R.E.M. is heading in with the new album.

If you ever listen to the real version of the song, that's exactly what she is saying. Vagiant lyrics are definitely edited for these games.

They weren't originally saying "FRET the Kells" in FTK, either. ;)

After listening to Seven online, I'm 90% sure they didn't edit the actual song, and instead are just claiming it says "rough" even when it says "****".

Get "Public Display of Infection" if you want the unedited lyrics on these songs. It's not a bad price either.

Thank you for increasing the pleasure I get from listening to Ayreon :D

To contribute: My mother listened to "How bizarre" by OMC and really liked the song, so the next time it was played on the radio she sang along. Only problem was that she did not understand "how bizarre" and thought it was "Parmesan".
Made the song a whole lot better :D

And thank you for reminding me it was an Ayreon song! I feel kind of ashamed now for forgetting... a friend of mine used to be Arjen Lucassen's webmaster, and he actually introduced me to him at a Stream of Passion gig... really nice guy.

Pleasantly surprised that someone on here knows Ayreon, though. Maybe the time has come to start an 'we want Ayreon in RB' thread in ultimate setlist? Now that would be awesome regional bonus tracks for the Dutch/Belgian/Scandinavian release... (kind of assuming they'll bundle those three countries/regions together)

Ayreon is great, but it wouldn't work too well in rock band... there's just too much of, well, everything.
Also, I'm not demanding any DLC for rock band until the European price has decreased to an acceptable level.

I was thinking along the lines of the Star One stuff, which is is a bit more 'traditional' in style.

As for the European price...I was fortunate enough to get the PS3 version for a very reasonable price from a local importer, so I managed to avoid that issue.

now there's a lot of em out there for this song, but this one is the best, and the original.

Speaking of songs in Rock Band with crazy lyrics, how about Date With The Night, released this week? I've heard this song dozens of times but never payed attention to the lyrics until today. Risqúe, to say the least!

Also, in related news, awesomesauce!

And what's up with the weird high note in Black Hole Sun? Maybe it was just me, too busy getting creeped out to the point of nightmares from the video, but I don't remember said high note.

I didn't realize it was there when I first got the game either. If you listen to the original track it is on there.

It's funny what our ears don't pick up when listening to the songs on your stereo or ipod.

As for a misheard lyric - my oldest daughter though that during the chorus of Suffragette City that Bowie was saying "I WANNA BE AN ARMY MAN", instead of "Don't lean on me man". :D She also thinks the word POTATO is in Smells Like Teen Spirit.
