take a look at all the games. see which you like better. I would not worry about the 'red ring problem', it isn't as common in the newer systems (if at all), plus MS has a FREE 3 year warrantee.
you will find a lot of the same games on both systems. It kinda depends what games you like. Most of the multiplatform games have been coming out on 360 about 2 weeks ahead of time and are usually technically superior due to better programming knowledge with the system. this should clear up by next year.
also, if you plan on going online 360 would be where it's at.
take a look at what your friends have as well, if you're going to be playing online.
My opinion would be to go with the 360 BY FAR.
Better lineup of games right now, better future lineup as well (Ps3 has a great lineup too.. just not as good.**OPINION OBVIOUSLY**unlessyoucountthereviewscores..)
reasons I think 360 is better? cheaper, better controller, better online, way better game selection.
but yeah, just see what games you like best man.

I'd tell you to get the one that most of your friends get. Odds are thats going to be a 360. The RRoD or Red Ring of Death, is a hardware failure and it causes your 360 to go back to a microsoft center. It initially happened on 1/3 of the 360's but with the newer versions it does not happen nearly as frequently but still on the rare occasion.
The 360 is cheaper, a PS3 comes with a blu-ray player installed if you are into movies, hd-tv, and basically an overall media player the PS3 is the big winner.
Online is really more of a push, I think. The xbox live and their Marketplace often has demos and things like that a week or 2 ahead of the PSN store and has a much easier interface however the PSN is a free service. Xbox live costs anywhere from 40-50 dollars a year depending on the tier your purchase and where you buy the subscription from.
If you are strictly a gamer as of right now the 360 has a larger variety of games in terms of exclusives. Sports games and things like that are released on both systems on the same day. The 360 has exclusives such as Gears of War, Bioshock, Mass Effect (which I really want even though I can't purchase it because I have a PS3) and of course Halo 3, all out or coming out before xmas.
The PS3 does have some intriguing exclusives but probably won't hit until the first fiscal quarter of 2008, games like Final Fantasy (whatever number it is lol) Metal Gear Solid 4, Gran Turismo (again some number, 5, I think) and Little Big Planet. However, there are some good ones out now or before xmas like Resistance, Warhawk, Ratchet and Clank, and my new personal favorite Heavenly Sword.
Sorry for the long post but I wanted to give you both sides of things, but the most important thing is trying to get what you want and what the majority of your friends have to make online gaming easier.

360 Pros: Online. Game Selection. HALO 3! Easy to understand interfacing, Online Marketplace, Xbox Live Arcade. How fairly cheap it is. Faceplate interchanging.
360 Cons: 3 Lights of Doom, (I bought my console January 1st, 2006 and I've not had one problem.) No internet browser.
PS3 Pros: FF?, MGS4, and GT? All coming out later than sooner though. I'm not very knowledgeable on the PS3, but I'm sure the Blue-ray is amazing if you're into movie collecting and things. Dualshock coming out soon! And online internet browser. Also... HOME!
PS3 Cons: PRICING. No dualshock controllers at the moment. Game selection is weak as of right now. Not saying there aren't good games, just that there isn't much to choose from.

Warning long post ahead:D
To answer your questions:
The "red ring thing": When your Xbox has a failure, three rings will light up on the front of the system (around the power button). I've had a system since launch and have only seen it twice... both times it was my fault (I moved the system and the AV cables came loose). Usually this means you need to send the system in for repair to MS. I also have an Elite and have never had a problem. None of my friends have ever had a problem either - most have had them since spring 06. So no, it does not happen to all of them. I still think the problem has been exagerated by the fact that people who have problems are much more vocal than those who don't and a lot of people love to hate Microsoft - although the problem does clearly exist. However, with the new systems the failure rate has supposedly dramatically declined. All hardware can fail - especially advanced hardware like game systems - my first DVD recorder died just after the 6 month warranty ended. My HDTV failed 1 year after warranty. My brother went through 3 PS2s. Don't let system failure be the basis of your decision.
About which system:
I own both. And I personally like the 360 better than the PS3. Some reasons:
1. More games - and mostly better games at the moment
2. Nice dashboard interface and overall online intergration
3. Achievements
4. Lots of demos and arcade titles (PS3 is starting to step up in this department some though)
The only things I don't like about the XBOX 360:
It's loud (especially the DVD drive) and the harddrive is optional (hurts game developers and seems like a step backwards from the first XBOX).
Things I like about PS3:
Nice and quiet. Blu-ray player. Heavenly Sword. Harddrive is standard.
However, YOU should decide for yourself. Here's a few questions to help:
1. Is price a factor?
2. Do you want to keep your PS2 game collection?
3. Are there any exclusives out or coming out for either system that you MUST own/play?
4. Do you mind paying for online?
5. Do you want a blu-ray player? An HD-DVD player? Don't care?
6. Do you have friends playing on either system already?
Those are just a few questions to consider. Good luck.

Here is the view from someone who is completely bias when it comes to consoles, Right now I own a 360, next year when I get my money up I will be buying a Wii and PS3. As for the last gen consoles I had all of them. Anyways, this is what i'll tell you. Go with the 360 if you want a lot of games that are extremely good. Right now the 360 is the best system you can get and the only reason I say that is for the games, As for the "red light of death" That's just idiots that don't know how to put a fan on their 360 and keep it an open ventilated area. Same goes for the PS3, if you put either system on the carpet or in a closed up area over time IT WILL die on you and you WILL have to get a new one.
But if you're looking for a system that's going to completely own 2008 and so on I'd say go with the PS3 man, plus if you're only getting the system to get rock band then you're pretty much set because rock band will hold anyone over for a few good months. As for the Wii... Don't get one of those unless you have friends because believe me, everyone I know that has a Wii and no one goes to their house hates the thing. The controller is awesome as hell at first but it will get boring eventually. Anyways, if you really want to know what system to go with get a PS3, yeah I own the 360 and of course it has great games for it. But I feel within the next year and so on PS3 will dominate the next gen consoles. Especially with the "Home" feature.
I love my 360, I had over 700 dollars the day the PS3 came out and not many people live in my town, The day it came out I could of walked in the store and got myself one. But I did the smart thing and got a system that actually has games on it atm, and no i'm not bashing the Ps3. Ps3 doesn't have any games on it because it hasn't even been out a year yet. Either give it some time and save your money, or go ahead and get the PS3. Plus it comes with a blu-ray player, yeah blu-ray is kind of pointless because honestly you can't really tell the difference between blu-ray and HDDVD except for the fact ones holds a hell of a lot more. But still, it's better than paying 170 just to watch those movies.

Some PS3s still have full BC for now.
360 wait for an update every 3-6 months and hope your Xbox games are on the list.
PS3 0.2% failure rate. Still have my first.
360 33% failure rate. On my 5th.
PS3 online $0.00
360 online $50.00 per year (so by the end you're paying more than PS3 if you're paying for this)
PS3 online experience: 6 games played,1 lagged,2 jerks
360 online experience: 12 games played,7 lagged, too many a*******,idiot kids that would be great examples of why to enforce the ratings and p****** that quit when they're losing to count. If I wanted to put up with a bunch of annoying kids I'd be a teacher and if I wanted to pay money to play with p**** I'd get a hooker. :p
Currently own 10 PS3 games and 16 360 games. By the end of the year it'll be 16 PS3 and 18 360.
So I say go with PS3 since the 360 has been nothing but a hassle for me.

I'm not going to sugar coat anything here. Yes the 360 has an outstanding library. Yes the PS3 is substantially more money. But lets face the facts here.
The 360 came out in 05 (in November). The PS3 in 06, almost exactly a year later. So common sense would tell you that, of course they are going to have a better library. However! PS3 is coming out with some amazing titles in the upcoming holiday season.
Personally, I like the PS3 XMB interface alot better than the cartoonish looking 360 dashboard. Also, it is a known fact that Microsoft recognizes the repeating issue of the ROD. Hence it extending its warranty to 3 years. Which worried me. It is either going to take them three years to fix this issue, or after said amount of time, you'll just have to buy another 360. I definitely want my investment to last more than a year, which is the average estimated time when you see the ROD. I don't think that is acceptable.
Sony hasn't had hardly any hardware issue to date with the PS3.
It all comes down to what you are really looking for in a console. So base your decision on the facts rather than someone else's personal opinion.
It took me a long time to decide (even going back and forth between 360 and PS3), and eventually decided to go with the PS3.
I love the fact that I don't have to pay to play online. I've not seen a single issue with the online capabilities such as lag or anything else of that nature. And the only time I get disconnected is when a server needs to do some updating.
So choose wisely because it is indeed an investment you'll have to live with.

You see that's good, I think you already know what you want. But it's understandable that you may have second thoughts about the matter, due to all this "console war thing". Just go with what you think is right for you and it will be the right choice. Have fun with whatever console you buy.:)
On a side note, I ORDER you to buy a PS3!!!!.....jk :p

With that 3 year warranty, my 360 just bit it (it was a first gen, they have gotten much better since), but I know that I am taken care of because Microsoft's customer service is quality. You just wanna make sure that you are dealing with a company that will take care of you, the customer. I dont know how PS3's customer service is with damages or stuff like that.
