View Full Version : My suggestions as a hardcore musician and gamer

My two cents. Maybe some are in the game already and I don't know, but I must say this:

1) Open strings. Sometimes you use only your right hand on the bass, specially for the low E. The game should simulate that, could be a line like the bass pedal on the drums, but you only strum without pressing fret buttons. That would make the bass even more distinct than the guitar without changing the hardware.

2) 1,2,3,4: That wouldn't count any points but the game should hint the drummer when to count with their sticks before some songs. That's what a rock band drummers do, unless there's a guitar intro.

3) Pizzicato: option to use the "pick" or 2 buttons that work as pizzicato. You know, true bassists use the index and middle finger. The strum bar doesn't work very well for this. A bass guitar with both the strum bar and the pizzicato buttons would be great, but that's a new hardware...

That's it for now. What do you guys think?

I think I read somewhere that they wanted to do a standalone bass guitar instrument at some point in the future. (it wasn't viable at this point due to all the hardware they're requiring and the fact that the bassist part doesn't have a career mode)

I think your #3 suggestion is pretty cool. They could implement that pretty easily by splitting the existing strum bar into two halves--a left half and a right half--each of which could be strummed independently. That would simulate the effect without the need for a whole bunch of messy backward compatibility type stuff.

Edit: Just saw that was your first post. Great ideas/topic for a first post. There's also an "official" suggestion post in the stickies at the top of the thread page if you have more.

Ah yes, but when I play with my fingers I'm usually still playing on the same string, so I can't rest my other finger on the string. I think splitting into 2 bars would make it LESS accurate. I'd rather the strum bar stay as is, but be good enough to play finger-style on.

I'll put these suggestions on the sticky thread, thanks, I should have seen it. :o

I've heard the new strum bar on the Strat makes playing the bass as you have stated possible because it is much firmer and has less of a bounce back to it, so no extra strums.

As have I. And it's very good to hear.

Have you tried the guitar yet? It lends itself VERY nicely for plucking like a real bass.

No, I haven't, but I'm glad to hear that.

But, correct me if I'm wrong, but plucking is different from pizzicato. You can slap with your thumb and pluck with your other fingers, that's all called "slapping" in general. Pizzicato is different, like Bakkster picture up here.

From Wiki:

Pizzicato is a playing technique that involves plucking the strings of an instrument.

I think you're referencing "pop", where you pull the string up to force it to hit the neck. This is usually used with thump "slap" playing.

And yes, my profile pic would be a good example of pizzicato. Bigger version (http://www.flickr.com/photos/bakkster/45692790/), other example (http://www.flickr.com/photos/bakkster/80649310/).

I was also thinking recently about how open notes should be included. It seems like it would be intuitive, but the problem is there is only one string to pluck. It could still work, but they should probably only use it as often as they throw in a green-orange chord.

Not really. It could represent most of the times the low E string. Think of Tom Sawyer, that will be on the game. The bass tab for the first part is something like

G---------
D---------
A-------7-
E-0-0-0--

So, having played Tom Sawyer before in the bass, I would feel weird to press a fret button on this part.

Now think about Ozzy's "No More Tears":

G-5h7-------5h7------
D-----0-0--------0-0--
A-----------------------
E-----------------------

Of course you can play this D string in the 5th fret of A string but you won't for obvious reasons. So you can use it more often than you think at first. And it doesn't really matter (for now) that there's only one string to pluck, the important thing is that it "feels" like an open string. Just like in Guitar Hero you play solos without changing your right hand position.

if open string hits were an option, Trogdor would be a sh!t-ton easier.

Along with a handful of other songs, especially those played in drop-d.

And I'm seriously anticipating a TRUE bass-like controller that'd be easier to play pizzicato, that's how I play bass. Fingers, or slap. One of the two.
