I couldn't help but notice when I went to the music store today that the announcement at the top of the screen for this week is

"Don't be a zero. Try this week's three new downloadable tracks"

I get the play on words and everything with the reference to the smashing pumpkins song, but I couldn't help but think that it reaked of peer pressure for younger kids. Obviously if your like 15 you'll be smart enough to just laugh at the comment and brush it off, but I can still see some kid worried that he'll be ostracized (sp?) for not getting it with that comment.

Im not saying its not funny im just suggesting that the future they should try to watch that kind of stuff, don't give anyone a reason to point out a bad situation in a great game...... (then again gta4 will most likely be the bearer of that for the next months to come)

Ummm... I don't know what to say. Lighten up?

Well, I guess I see where your coming from, though peer pressure or no peer pressure, I'll buy Zero (and any other Smashing Pumpkins they throw at us).

Oh yeah, and if it gets them more sales... then good for them.:p

I think you need to give younger kids a little more credit.

I can't imagine a kid thinking "AW MAN IF I DON'T BY THE NEW PUMPKINS SONG I'M GONNA BE A ZERO! KNOW WEIGH! I BETTER GET ON IT!"

Besides, how many kids on xbox live have gamer points and can buy songs regularly?

it doesn't matter. i just wan't more smashing pumpkins!!

Bullet With Butterfly Wings!
1979!

Zero sucks anyway.

Well, I don't like it much. If there are fans out there, more power to you.

All in all a pretty uneventful week for me. I also expected such tacky one-liners, but it's all in fun. I'd be pretty disturbed if they were serious. Is Harmonix ever serious? Only about rocking.

I agree; it's just a silly little play on words that's supposed to make you smile and go "Awwwww."

Also I think you should start smoking. Now. Or bad things will happen. ;)

I don't know what kind of drugs you were on when you wrote this, but I hope you weren't serious. You are blowing this WAY out of proportion.

Lighten up; kids aren't that impressionable.
Well, kids that are that influenced by peer pressure probably don't tell their friends they play Rock Band in the first place in fear of seeming "uncool." They're also completely at the mercy of their parents' credit cards.

I can't wait until they offer that one album and the text is "Who's Next to be brutally murdered? It's you, if you don't buy DLC this week!"

Interesting, because I honestly think that if Activision did this in GH3, they would be slammed for pushing their product or trying to make pressure to buy.

One thing that does irk me about GH3 is how a lot of their inbetween song loading titles are really negative. How so-and-so-sucks, kicking people out of the band, etc. The Rock Band loading messages don't have that kind of garbage.

It's subtle but still I really don't appreciate that sort of tone.

I'm just waiting for some sort of italian track-pack, so I can be told to buy it or they're going to break my knees.

I understand what the OP is trying to communicate here but I don’t think he recognizes how resilient young people are these days.
I think there are far worse things threatening the youth today than a “questionable” play on words from a flourishing company.

I agree. I don't see a need to ridicule the OP, even if it's not a big issue.

Any kid who would fall for that, deserves to have their money taken. I don't care how young they are.

This is why kids have to wear bicycle helmets now, much too overprotective people..

I don't know about you guys, but when I was young enough to a) be called a zero, and b) give in to peer pressure, I didn't even have $2 to spend on DLC.

I'm not trying to devalue your concern, but citing "peer pressure," to me, is a slippery slope, and it's certainly not an argument I want to see flourish on our forums.

They are trying to advertise some more...since this week is hideous, and they know there will be a weak amount of downloads.

Yeah!

It's not cool to accuse people of using peer pressure, and none of the cool kids do it.

Is poor taste really even the right term for this? I'm thinking, "non-issue" would have been more appropriate.

Poor taste would be like... making fun of JFK while you're giving a half-assed apology.

Ya know, something like that.

I didn't want to be a "Zero". I downloaded the track.

Also, I take those kind of things with a grain of salt. Kind of like when Infinity Ward (in Call of Duty 4) posted they were hiring for the guys that got canned at EA.

OakTea

I think it's a harmless little pun. I personally can't think of any other way to use one of the DLC track song names in a little phrase like that.

Besides, Zero is probably the best known of the three songs.

"Zero in on our new DLC"

I guess that'd work, I think that's a phrase.. To zero in on something.. Maybe not. I like the old one.

04-30-2008, 08:56 PM
dude.. seriously someone else said it earlier

do you think the kids who would actually be pressured have either xbox gamer points or a credit card on the PSN? doubtful

Personally, I found it witty. They could have made it mehhh. They chose a better route.
