I finally beat expert drums yesterday and am now an ANIMAL! Pretty long road for a 39-year old non-drummer (prior to RB); it took about 3 months after I beat hard, and I considered hanging it up a few times. The songs I had the most trouble with were DOA and Don't Fear the Reaper, but there were lots of other multi-fail songs here and there. RttH wasn't easy, but it wasn't all that bad compared to some, since the bass beats are straightforward.
But the point of this post is that despite this "achievement," I'm still a pretty crappy drummer. I go back to do "easy" songs and sometimes fail. I have a ton of 3* performances where I used overdrive storage to avoid parts I can't really do, or where I fudged complex parts and only did bass and simplified patterns to limp through. I still have a nasty tendency to overhit bass and my left hand is wretched on its own.
Which is really my choice, as I opted to speed through the sets rather than obtain mastery before moving on. I just thought it was interesting that ANIMAL != Expert Drumming Competence. Could this be the first step on the dark path of the Achievement Whore? I feel so cheap and tawdry....
